  • Sulfur Mining in Indonesia CHEN: Every day sulfur miners in Indonesia risk their health and their lives, just to survive. With limited job opportunities available, men turn to mining, which pays slightly more than farming. Here's more on the story. STORY: Mining is a brutal, labor intensive job, wherever you are, and whatever the substance. Asia's biggest volcanic crater, Kawah Ijen in East Java, is home to a few hundred miners who risk their lives daily to hand-mine sulfur... all for about two and a half cents a pound. Sounds like a pittance to many, but the money is more than the average pay in the vast Indonesian archipelago (pronounced ar ki pel ago). The enormous natural crater formed lake, where the sulfur is mined, is 220 yards deep and filled with steaming acid water, some 2500 yards above sea level. The miners walk miles to get to the mines at the top of the crater, wearing hardly any protection. Some cough but they are paid by the weight and ignore the sulfurous smoke that turns their eyes red with water and blocks their noses making breathing a chore. [Sukirman, Sulfur Miner]: "The only job I can get is here. What can I do as there is no other choice?" The experienced ones take up to 200 pounds in baskets straddled over their shoulder on each trip to the collection center, some 12 miles below. Some 10 tons of sulfur are mined daily and each miner earns an average of $6 a day. [Arifin, Sulfur Miner]: "They pay us cash and it is higher than any farming job here. A farmer can get $1.60 a ...

  • Lapis Lazuli mining in Sari-i-Sang in northern Afghanistan Years of war and exploitation have degraded many of Afghanistan's natural resources. But among the still highly prized assets is the lapis lazuli gemstone which has been mined in northern Afghanistan for 6000 years. The only pure source of the stone lies in Sar-i-Sang in the Kocha valley of northern Afghanistan. James Bays makes the dangerous journey to the mines and finds men who risk their lives to get to these gems. To get to the world's largest lapis lazuli mine - you have to go on a gruelling journey. It takes more than 12 hours from the nearest town by road, although there are no real roads to speak of. These are mountain passes - some them are extremely treacherous - and they can only be navigated slowly and extremely carefully. Finally, you drop down into the Kocha valley - and the mines at Sari-i-Sang, where a village has been built to house the hundreds of men involved in the search for lapis lazuli. The gemstone - actually a complex mineral made up of sodium and aluminium has been highly sought after for thousands of years. The deep ocean blue stones are on sale as jewellery and gift boxes in shops in Kabul, but much of the lapis mined in Northern Afghanistan is smuggled across the border to Pakistan. The village is the base camp for a highly lucrative, yet until recently a totally illegal, business. You are already at a high altitude here - before you start climbing to the mines themselves. At this height you soon get out of breath. Once inside the dark ...

  • Introduction to Longwall Mining in Illinois In November 2009, Eco-Justice Collaborative () traveled with representatives of Topless America and the Sierra Club to central Illinois to take a first-hand look at longwall mining. This highly-mechanized form of mining includes planned subsidence, causing land to drop from 4 to 6 feet. It is occurring under some of the best farmland in the world, trading prime farmland for cheap coal. As land subsides, foundations crack and septic systems and wells are affected. Residents often leave their homes and farms, depopulating and destroying what used to be cohesive communities, rather than negotiate repairs with mining companies. Longwall mining is Illinois form of mountaintop removal mining. As with mountaintop removal mining, toxic chemicals are used to process coal. Evidence suggests that these chemicals are leaching into ground water and water supplies at selected locations. This video highlights impacts in central Illinois Macoupin County, and takes an initial look at the proposed Deer Run Mine in Montgomery County which, if constructed as planned, will be the largest coal mine in the US To learn more, contact Pam or Lan Richart at [email protected] or Citizens Against Longwall Mining: [email protected]
