Cognitive Neuroscience of Mindfulness Meditation Google Tech Talks February, 28 2008 ABSTRACT Mindfulness meditation, one type of meditation technique, has been shown to enhance emotional awareness and psychological flexibility as well as induce well-being and emotional balance. Scientists have also begun to examine how meditation may influence brain functions. This talk will examine the effect of mindfulness meditation practice on the brain systems in which psychological functions such as attention, emotional reactivity, emotion regulation, and self-view are instantiated. We will also discuss how different forms of meditation practices are being studied using neuroscientific technologies and are being integrated into clinical practice to address symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Speaker: Philippe Goldin Philippe is a research scientist and heads the Clinically Applied Affective Neuroscience group in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. He spent 6 years in India and Nepal studying various languages, Buddhist philosophy and debate at Namgyal Monastery and the Dialectic Monastic Institute, and serving as an interpreter for various Tibetan Buddhist lamas. He then returned to the US to complete a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Rutgers University. His NIH-funded clinical research focuses on (a) functional neuroimaging investigations of cognitive-affective mechanisms in adults with anxiety disorders, (b) comparing the effects of mindfulness meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy on brain ...

Stress Relief 23 - Mindfulness Meditation with Dr. Joe Parisi (Chapter 23 of DVD) Meditation has roots in all cultures. This is an introduction to mindfulness meditation. Find comfortable position. Become aware of body, different sensations; invite it to get rid of tension. Settle into the present moment. Notice where you are experiencing your breath. Let emotions and thoughts go by, focussing on in and out breath. Use breath to come back to present moment. Simply note where your mind is going, then gently bring your awareness back to your breath. Bring your mind back 100 times. Using the breath as a place to rest your mind, where your mind and body can come together. Slowly open eyes and come back to room, experiencing whatever stillness might be present. Knowing you've done a good thing to pause, and be with yourself.

The Compassion and Attention Longitudinal Meditation Study (CALM) will help scientists determine how people's bodies, minds and hearts respond to stress and which specific meditation practices are better at turning down those responses. "While much attention has been paid to meditation practices that emphasize calming the mind, improving focused attention or developing mindfulness, less is known about meditation practices designed to specifically foster compassion, and what specific problems can be alleviated through this practice," says Charles Raison, associate professor in Emory's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and principle investigator of the study. Raison and principle contemplative investigator, Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD, senior lecturer in the Emory Department of Religion, collaborated on an earlier study at Emory showing that college students who regularly practiced compassion meditation had a significant reduction in ...

Divide and Conquer: How the Essence of Mindfulness Parallels the Nuts and Bolts of Science Google Tech Talk January 28, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Shinzen Young. The purpose of this talk is threefold: (1) to describe how senior adepts use mindfulness to reduce suffering and gain insight into selfhood and emotions. (2) To point out how the method they use in many ways parallels what scientists do when confronted with a complex and inscrutable system in nature. (3) To discuss how this fundamental parallelism between the two endeavors can become the basis for a productive collaboration in the future. Bio: Shinzen Young became fascinated with Asian culture while a ***ager in Los Angeles. Later he enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin. Eventually, he went to Asia and did extensive training in each of the three major Buddhist meditative traditions: Vajrayana, Zen, and Vipassana. Upon returning to the United States, his intellectual interests shifted to the burgeoning dialogue between Eastern internal science and Western technological science. In recognition of his original contributions to that dialogue, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology has awarded him an honorary doctorate. Shinzen's innovative techniques for pain management derived from two sources: The first is his personal experience dealing with discomfort during intense periods of meditation in Asia, and during shamanic ceremonies with tribal cultures. The second is some three decades of experience in coaching people through a wide spectrum of chronic and ...
