  • Yunha Lee GISS Lunch Seminar 20101103 Title: Aerosol indirect effect using a fast and accurate global aerosol microphysics model Abstract: Aerosols can enhance cloud albedo and modify precipitation efficiency by acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). These two aerosol indirect effects are the most uncertain climate forcings. The large uncertainty in estimates of the aerosol indirect effect is due partly to uncertainties in CCN predictions and can be improved with appropriate simulation of aerosol number and size. The TwO-Moment Aerosol Sectional (TOMAS) microphysics model incorporated in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies General Circulation Model II' (GISS GCM II') predicts accurately the evolution of aerosol number by aerosol microphysical processes such as condensation and coagulation. My doctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on two broad topic areas: a) the improvements of GISS-TOMAS model and b) the study of aerosol indirect effects using the improved GISS-TOMAS model. This seminar will cover the latter. First, the impact of mitigation of black carbon (BC) particulate matter on aerosol indirect forcing is studied. Mitigation of BC has been suggested as a strategy complementary to reduction of greenhouse gases due to its positive top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) direct radiative forcing. However, BC-containing emissions can contribute to the CCN population when those particles become internally mixed with hydrophilic aerosol components, and a decrease in BC mass result in a reduction ...

  • Clouds on Mars - Laura Iraci (SETI Talks) SETI Talks Archive: Water ice clouds are an important part of the martian hydrological cycle, influencing the water and energy budgets. Microphysical models can be used to study the connections between cloud formation and water distribution throughout the system (for example, as surface frost layers), but only if the intricacies of cloud formation and growth are understood and properly parameterized. To that end, we have performed laboratory studies of water ice nucleation on a variety of surrogate materials and have found that initiation of ice is more difficult than often presumed. We will report these results, along with preliminary growth rate observations.

Rasmussen The WRF model was used in conjunction with a relatively sophisticated bulk microphysical parameterization to simulate the effect of sudden ice nuclei injected into an entirely liquid cloud high in the atmosphere. The simulations mimic an actual event in which visual and satellite observations showed a liquid cloud at -31C that was penetrated by numerous aircraft leading to subsequent ice nucleation and eventual "cloud holes." The holes in the observed cloud persisted for many hours over a multi-state region in the southern US Model-predicted rates of growth/decay of cloud holes were compared to satellite estimates. Using the model, we can also ***yze the role of the Wegener--Bergeron--Findeisen process versus secondary circulations produced from the latest heat release. The idealized WRF experiment provides a simple yet effective framework to test a variety of ice nucleation processes with wide areas of application in planned or inadvertent weather modification. However, we often ignore the fact that we have to make a qualitative jump in the progression from macrophysical systems to microphysical systems. When we investigate the system as a whole, we must not limit our knowledge simply to macrophysical parameters which can be measured, as length, distance, volume, etc., but to effective parameters which are further related with electric charges, electromagnetic fields, quantum energy and electrodynamic phenomena. We set in motion a picture of a macrophysical system, ie a plant. We can describe its height, its volume, its weight, the quantity of leaves it has, its color, etc.; however, as we move our observations towards smaller and smaller portions of the macroscopic structure, we arrive at a point at which the macrophysical qualities leap into another realm where the parameters with which we previously classified the living organism no longer have any utility. Of course, the transition is so subtle that many of us succumb to the idea that there is no more physical explanation to describe life. If we understand that there is no boundary, but rather a continuum which links every process in every living system with the Universe, we will not be so easily fooled by the illusion of a separation between the macrophysical world and the microphysical world.
