  • Cell-friendly shape memory polymer Researchers at Syracuse University are developing a temperature-sensitive shape memory polymer substrate that can be programmed to change shape under cell-compatible conditions. This video shows profound remodeling after shape memory activation. Microfilaments that initially aligned along the direction of the grooves reorganized to a randomly distributed organization following transition to the flat surface. The observed microfilament organization before and after transition was comparable to that observed in cells on grooved and flat static controls, respectively. Cells on static controls exhibited no comparable reorganization following the temperature change. More at

  • Hill Country Ride - Part 3 (Finale) Part 3 of 3: The latter half of a ride I did with some friends. This is just the section between Marble Falls and NW Austin (Volente), along 1431 and Lime Creek Road. Note: I haven't ridden Lime Creek in a few years, and certainly never ridden it on the Ducati. There is a reason for this, and I was quickly reminded why: idiot drivers (who either can't stay on their side of the double-yellow, or who like to bust a u-turn right in front of you); sand and/or gravel in the turns; wildlife; cops galore; and the occasional crazy local who hates bikers and either dumps oil in the road or strings up microfilament wire (I'm not exaggerating.. that's actually happened on this road). So.. thankfully out of all those fairly regular hazards, I only saw 2 on this road (U-turn - not in this clip since I had to trim it down under 10 minutes - and sand/gravel). I totally botched a corner thanks to the sandy stuff in a 15mph curve, but I was really fortunate that there was no oncoming traffic. Enjoy!
