Cold air advection from the poles moves southward and adiabatically warmed sinking air advecting northward, helps create a substantial temperature gradient along the polar front. Albeit there is a strong temperature gradient along the polar front and the ITCZ, the temperature gradient anatomy is quite different. At the ITCZ, the temperature is lower at both sides and is the highest at the ITCZ itself, causing air from both sides to converge into it and rise evenly. At the polar front however, the temperature to the south of the baroclinic boundary is higher than the one to the north. As a result, the colder air from the north slides beneath the warmer air, forcing the more buoyant warmer air aloft. This induces thermodynamic fluxes incessantly hither and thither at the mid latitude regions. That is the primary reason why the majority of mid latitude cyclones form in close proximity to the polar front. And as many of you know, a significant synoptic scale cyclone is often associated with anomalously high temperatures at its right side and cooler than temperatures at the left side due to the counterclockwise rotation.   • Meteorology Tutorial: Cyclones and Anticyclones Anticyclones are basically the opposite of cyclones (Greek prefix, anti, means opposite). Cyclones are areas of surface convergence and upper level divergence, and since anticyclones are the exact opposite, anticyclones are areas of surface divergence and upper level convergence. A cyclone is formed as a result of expanding, rising, and unstable air caused by heating. However as volume increases, the temperature decreases. According to Charles law, at a constant pressure, volume varies directly with absolute temperature. But still, why is it that when the volume increases, the expanding airs temperature decreases. According to the Kinetic theory, gas molecules are in constant random motion, and thus move hither and thither. Now in most cases, heat is energy, and when heat is added into a reaction, it often acts as a catalyst. Hence, the gas molecules move faster and take up more space as they move at higher velocities, increasing the volume. So now one liter of the air parcel would now occupy more space than it did previously. Moreover as the gas molecules move faster, they interact and bounce off each other more. As they bounce off each other, they transport some of that energy to each other, but some of that energy is also released in to the ambient air (Latent heat), causing a loss of energy. It is in a sense, semi-nuclear fusion phenomena. They then become cooler as they lose energy, and if the air contains ample water vapor, it would actually condense into clouds ...

In other words, it takes more heat to raise the temperature of water by one degree. Thus, water takes more time to warm and to cool. --Since air has a lower specific heat capacity, it has a higher temperature than water during daytime. This creates a mesoscale capping inversion--meaning, that the temperature rises from lower levels to higher levels (relatively...the inversion stops at about 1000ft).When that happens, it is harder for air to rise, because the warmer air is on top of the cooler air near the water surface. Warm air needs to below cooler air for it to be sufficiently unstable for formidable convective storm formation; why?--because warm air is less dense and more buoyant. An air balloon will rise much faster when it is in a tank of water than if it was outside, because of the higher pressure of water and the lower of air. Likewise when warmer air is above cooler air below it, it is harder for it to rise. This is why convection often wanes with weak tropical cyclones during diurnal minimum. --During night time, the temperature of the air is cooler than the water surface. As a result, the air parcels that are close and is in contact with the water warms by conduction. Thus, the air directly at sea level is less dense than the air above it. Myers, an American Meteorological Society certified meteorologist, explained on CNN's December 18 2008 "Lou Dobbs Tonight" that the whole idea is arrogant and mankind was in danger of dying from other natural events more so than global warming. "You know, to think that we could affect weather all that much is pretty arrogant," Myers said. "Mother Nature is so big, the world is so big, the oceans are so big -- I think we're going to die from a lack of fresh water or we're going to die from ocean acidification before we die from global warming, for sure." Dr. Jay Lehr, an expert on environmental policy, told Dobbs' viewers "If we go back really, in recorded human history, in the 13th Century, we were probably 7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than we are now and it was a very prosperous time for mankind," Lehr said. "If go back to the Revolutionary War 300 years ago, it was very, very cold. We've been warming out of that cold spell from the Revolutionary War period and now we're back into a cooling cycle." "The last 10 years have been quite cool," Lehr continued. "And right now, I think we're going into cooling rather than warming and that should be a much greater concern for humankind.
