  • Turbo Exhaust Manifold Swap #2 I'm at it again... I finally got it right. There's been a lot of foreshadowing concerning this video. The other manifold swapping video was named Number 1. That's probably the most obvious one. Other blatant hints are the instances of a Forced Performance box on my workbench in the background of a few scenes from months ago and me saying I'd open it later. Well, it was un-coated. I finally got it ceramic coated because I thought I could hear an exhaust leak and figured that would be a great way to fix it... I was wrong. Er... no, I still have an exhaust leak, but at least I know it's not the manifold. Probably the downpipe. I'll figure it out. I did the audio track in this video. You can tell.

  • Diagnosing a vacuum leak in intake manifold A Malfunction indicator light (MIL)/Check engine light (CEL) indicated trouble with the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) in a Mazda Mx6 1993. Vacuum hoses, solenoids, EGR valve position sensor and the EGR valve itself were checked. Pretty much everything checked out, with the exception of a vacuum "nipple" source which upon application of external vacuum didn't hold vacuum nor 'sucked' with the car in idle (good vacuum should be produced with a closed throttle plate). Since the source of vacuum used for the EGR valve is 'stored' in vacuum chambers/vacuum reservoirs, a leak in their connections could explain the EGR malfunction code. Thus, here I performed a 'propane test' but using Throttle Body cleaner instead --Carb cleaner is supposed to be equivalent. Be careful, this is FLAMMABLE. Have somebody look at the RPMs in the tachometer while you spray carb cleaner in suspected areas (use a straw). In this case I started with UNO (1) at the firewall, driver's side of the air intake and proceeded clockwise in 10 total spots - the last 6 correspond to pits where spark boots enter the engine (intake runners). The flammable carb cleaner taken by a vacuum leak proceeds into the intake plenum enriching the gas:air mixture and increasing the engine speed, which is the readout here. I'm NOT responsible for any mishaps you might make.   • GM 3800 Series II Supercharged Intake Manifold Leaks This is an all too common problem with supercharged 3800 series engines. GM used a plastic lower intake manifold gasket that would break down over time causing coolant to leak into the oil. If left unfixed, it would get worse to the point where your engine starts knocking from poor lubrication. Your oil will look really milky as a result. This engine had only 60k miles on it when I replaced these gaskets and its a good thing I did. GM makes a newer revision aluminum gasket set that fixes this problem. You can get those from a GM dealer, they are the set that has locating pins, the stock ones did not, but these do fit fine.

We've got our diesel block and new parts set aside, and we're using the original 350 engine to mock up how we want the turbo to fit in the car. We were expecting a ton of fambrication, as turbo manifolds or headers are not readily available for 1971 Olds 350 engines, and we were expecting to have to make our own. However, after studying the stock manifolds, a potential solution became apparant. From a performance standpoint, turbo cars don't seem to care if you're running headers or manifolds, the power levels are similar. And cast iron is as strong as anything when it comes to exhaust parts. We notices that the Olds manifolds had a provision for the single exhaust version cars that merges the left and right exhaust pipes together... can we use this factory style setup to build our turbo exhaust?   • 4g63 Turbo Manifold Swap #1 This is one of the problems I found after the Thursday night test & tune. Over the next 2 days, I kept watching my airflow counts dropping gradually in my logs and knew what was going down. Then I decided to drive it to work and it sounded like somebody was running next to me with a lawnmower... further confirming that I knew what was going on. Yep. Pre-turbo exhaust leak. It still had balls when I mashed the gas, but I could tell it wasn't right. I was surprised because when I found the crack, I realized I shouldn't have even been able to spool the turbo. This manifold flows better than the stock piece, sure... but unless you get one made of inconel, it's a raging pile of crap. Get rid of it. 304 stainless doesn't cut it. I even had the lower turbo/exhaust brace in place, so it wasn't getting wrenched on accelerating and decelerating. This thing just wore out & broke off from heat and pressure, and it did it in less than 2000 miles. Yes, it's the one in the polishing video. Other things that are a good idea to do... 1) always use factory turbo bolts and washers. You're supposed to replace them with NEW bolts and washers. Use FACTORY TORQUE SPECS! 21-23lbs + 60-70° 2) Stainless Steel 3mm turbo gaskets are re-usable. Worth the investment. 3) Use Stainless Steel ARP head studs. They don't break off like OEM ones do. This job sucks when you snap off factory studs. Use FACTORY TORQUE SPECS! 19-21 lbs (even on ARP hardware) for the M8 nuts. 21-23 lbs on the outer two M10 nuts ...
