  • How to STOP Anxiety! http Sick of feeling nervous? I would be! A simple plan to eliminate it. Anxiety is a physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components (Seligman, Walker & Rosenhan, 2001). These components combine to create the feelings that we typically recognize as fear, apprehension, or worry. Anxiety is often accompanied by physical sensations such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headache. The cognitive component entails expectation of a diffuse and certain danger. Somatically the body prepares the organism to deal with threat (known as an emergency reaction) blood pressure and heart rate are increased, sweating is increased, bloodflow to the major muscle groups is increased, and immune and digestive system functions are inhibited. Externally, somatic signs of anxiety may include pale skin, sweating, trembling, and pupillary dilation. Emotionally, anxiety causes a sense of dread or panic and physically causes nausea, and chills. Behaviorally, both voluntary and involuntary behaviors may arise directed at escaping or avoiding the source of anxiety and often maladaptive, being most extreme in anxiety disorders. However, anxiety is not always pathological or maladaptive: it is a common emotion along with fear, anger, sadness, and happiness, and it has a very important function in relation to survival.

  • Full Blown Arts The video I refer to here is this one (sorry about the crap sound for a minute or so in the middle) There seems to be some evidence to suggest that certain genetic predispositions which, in their full-blown state, are maladaptive or lethal may, in partially-expressed form, give an evolutionary advantage. Examples of these might include the genes for Tay-Sachs disease and Sickle Cell anemia; these normally fatal conditions, when only partially expressed genetically, seem to produce resistance to tuberculosis and malaria. This would explain why certain genetically transmitted diseases do not simply die out. As long as the ratio between those individuals with partial gene expression and those with the full-blown form is high enough then the gene pool can tolerate the level of fatality because this is outweighed by the adaptive advantages. This would also seem to apply to the condition of schizophrenia, which again in its full-blown form is a tragic and deeply maladaptive condition, in its partially-expressed form, referred to by Sopolsky as 'schizotypal', may in certain circumstances confer an evolutionary advantage. These circumstances involve the schizotypal individual adopting a position within a society corresponding to a shaman or wounded healer. The behaviour of shamans seem to correlate very closely with those traits found in individuals who have partially-expressed schizotypy, particularly a tendency to metamagical thinking. One variant on this ...

  • People are Stupid tymology of the word Stupidity is a quality or state of being stupid, or an act or idea that exhibits properties of being stupid.[1] The root word stupid,[2] which can serve as an adjective or noun, comes from the Latin verb stupere, for being numb or astonished, and is related to stupor.[3] According to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary, the words "stupid" and "stupidity" entered the English language in 1541. Since then, stupidity has taken place along with "fool," "idiot," "dumb," "moron," and related concepts as a pejorative appellation for human misdeeds, whether purposeful or accidental, due to absence of mental capacity. The word "stupidest" is increasingly common in newspapers.[4][5][6] Definition of Stupidity The modern English word "stupid" has a broad range of application, from being slow of mind (indicating a lack of intelligence, care or reason), dullness of feeling or sensation (torpidity, senseless, insensitivity), or lacking interest or point (vexing, exasperating). It can either infer a congenital lack of capacity for reasoning, or a temporary state of daze or slow-mindedness. James F. Wells, Ph. D., in his book, "Understanding Stupidity,"[7] defines stupidity thusly, "The term may be used to designate a mentality which is considered to be informed, deliberate and maladaptive." Dr. Welles distinguishes stupidity from ignorance; one must know they are acting in their own worst interest. Secondly, it must be a choice, not a forced act or accident. Lastly ...

  • Schema Therapy - Narcissism Part 2 (Session 8) This was created for a graduate psychology class assignment. At the time we were making these clip few streaming videos were available to public. We recognize we are amateurs and may not be exercising the principles outlaid in the text precisely. Narcissism is like any personality trait varies in degree of social and personal conflict. After working a practicum at a college counseling center it became apparent that much of the Axis I issues were highly related to non-significant Axis II traits. Schema Therapy is an excellent psychological conceptualization and treatment device for personality. Whilst the DSM-IV looks to behaviors for the diagnosis of narcissism it is important to keep that any conceptualization of these personality traits needs to go much further. Like most psychological dysfunction, the behavioral symptoms are merely the cancerous wounds visible. Bandages, prison, and other behavioral interventions will not address the cancer within. Like some chemotherapy that alters the cancer's DNA, Schema Therapy will uproot painful processes and attempt to restructure the associated implicit and explicit emotional, perceptual, and verbal responses. Do not be fooled with the notion that some personality disorders cannot be treated; empirical evidence is suggesting otherwise. Schema Therapy and Dialectic-Behavioral Therapy are just some of the approaches showing efficacy. The therapist begins suggesting to the patient that inside of him there is a lonely child. The ...
  • Maladaptive Daydreaming. Most children daydream. Most children have imaginary friends they play out creative scenarios with. Their fantasy world is a simple, joyful distraction from their outer lives. Eventually their outer lives take root, and they grow out of it. Their playful fantasies become unnecessary as they develop more fulfilling relationships. Their fantasy dream world fades into the past as nothing but a wonderful childhood memory. Usually they forget it ever existed. For some of us............it doesn't, and the consequences can be drastic. For the past 30 years I've been living in an alternate reality that has completely taken over my life. Instead of fading into the past, it became my reality. The outside world faded & faded, and I've been fighting to reclaim it. Long past the point of being a joyful fantasy, it's become an addiction that I have unlimited access to. I have no self control. I can only distract myself out of it. I'm like an alcoholic with an unlimited supply of booze everywhere I go. When I do it too much I feel sick & dazed, yet I can't stop. I've stepped out into traffic & almost gotten myself killed more times than I can count. I've gotten better & am struggling to find footing in the outside world. In the meantime, I want to reach out. This condition has a name. It's called Maladaptive Daydreaming. I spent years feeling alone and scared, like I was the only one on the planet that could possibly be going through this. I felt like a freak. I was ...

  • Doreen Granpeesheh: Approaching Autism with CARD Early intervention is imperative in the treatment of children with autism for the best possible outcome. Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh has the most comprehensive approach to the treatment of these children worldwide through the CARD system of ABA which is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree. Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh will discuss the details of this systematic approach to the assessment and evaluation of behavior, and the application of interventions that alter behavior. ABA is the most objective discipline focused on the reliable measurement and objective evaluation of observable behavior to this date. Programs based upon ABA methodologies are grounded in the well-established principles of learning and operant conditioning, as influenced by the works of researchers such as Edward L. Thorndike and BF Skinner. The use of single case experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of individualized interventions is an essential component of ABA programs. ABA generally focuses on the process of behavior change with respect to the development of adaptive, prosocial behavior and the reduction of maladaptive behavior. Specific "socially significant behaviors" include academics, communication, social skills and adaptive living skills. Treatment approaches grounded in ABA are now considered to be at the forefront of therapeutic and educational interventions for ...

  • Anti-Drug Film: Drug Abuse - The Chemical Tomb (1969) 1969 In the first edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (published in 1952) grouped alcohol and drug abuse under Sociopathic Personality Disturbances, which were thought to be symptoms of deeper psychological disorders or moral weakness. The third edition, published in 1980, was the first to recognize substance abuse (including drug abuse) and substance dependence as conditions separate from substance abuse alone, bringing in social and cultural factors. The definition of dependence emphasised tolerance to drugs, and withdrawal from them as key components to diagnosis, whereas abuse was defined as "problematic use with social or occupational impairment" but without withdrawal or tolerance. In 1987 the DSM-IIIR category "psychoactive substance abuse," which includes former concepts of drug abuse is defined as "a maladaptive pattern of use indicated by...continued use despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent social, occupational, psychological or physical problem that is caused or exacerbated by the use (or by) recurrent use in situations in which it is physically hazardous." It is a residual category, with dependence taking precedence when applicable. It was the first definition to give equal weight to behavioural and physiological factors in diagnosis. By 1988, the DSM-IV defines substance dependence as "a syndrome involving compulsive use, with or without tolerance ...
