Myanmar - Putao to Machan Baw The town of "Putao", a quaint district town, situated 1342ft above sea-level, in Kachin State in the north of the Union of Myanmar. Putao is 725 miles by plane from Yangon, and is part of the Himalayan mountain range. Putao is situated on a plateau in the middle of high mountain ranges. The distinctive factor of Putao is that it is surrounded by Southeast Asia's only snow-capped mountain. Known as "Pu Taung" in the Shan language, the town of Putao is inhabited by national brethrens such as the Bamar, Jing Phaw, Rawan, Lisu and Khamti Shan who live there peacefully side-by-side. The dark and misty mountain ranges, the winding stream flowing down these mountain sides and the turning and curving roads snaking across these mountains and the quaint traditional houses of our national brethrens adds up to the picturous beauty of Putao.

Tibor R. Machan: Human Rights Issues in Germany 5/6 Professor Tibor R. Machan, PhD, Philosopher, Chapman University, California, USA Human Rights Issues in Germany (Part 5 of 6) 23 July 2008, University of Heidelberg If Germany is to follow through with the revolution that began with the Fall of the Wall, the country's legal order will need to begin to emphasize individual rights in the tradition of John Locke and Thomas Jefferson. This tradition most fully expresses the idea of the sovereignty of the human individual, something that began to emerge with the Magna Carta and is the mark of justice in human community life. Germany - and indeed most of the world - is far from having attained this kind of polity. But that doesn't make it any less imperative.

Machan Handball A group of desperate slum dwellers, living on the margins of society under impossible pressures, find an invitation to a handball tournament in Bavaria to be the answer to their prayers, a one way ticket to the West and the wealth that will solve all their problems

machan Enjoyable, well made and nicely acted comedy-drama that plays like a Sri Lankan version of The Full Monty, with a script that's both frequently funny and genuinely moving. What's it all about? Directed by Uberto Pasolini, Machan is an award-winning comedy-drama that's based on a true story. Set in the slums of Colombo, Sri Lanka, the film stars Gihan De Chickera as Manoj, a hotel barman who dreams of living and working in the West, along with his best friend, street fruit seller Stanley (Dharmapriya Dias), who has his own problems with mounting debts, a crazy family and a young brother who's becoming more and more of a delinquent. When their latest visa application is rejected, the two men are crushed until the chance discovery of an invitation to a handball tournament in Bavaria gives them an idea. Despite the fact that neither of them really knows what handball is, they submit an application and soon form the Sri Lankan National Handball Team, joined by an unlikely assortment of friends, relatives, creditors, crooks and even a couple of policemen. But will they achieve their dream and make it to Bavaria? And how many of the team will scarper as soon as they cross the border? The Good Pasolini's direction gives the film a documentary-like realism that works well; he also gets extremely naturalistic performances from a terrific ensemble cast made up of non-professionals and first-time actors. De Chickera and Dias make a likeable central duo and there's strong support from ...

Reason Foundation Co-Founder Tibor Machan on Ayn Rand Tibor Machan was one of the founding partners in Reason Enterprises, which began publishing Reason magazine in 1971, three years after its creation. He became editor in the spring of 1971 and worked with the magazine through the '70s and '80s as an associate editor and senior editor. In 1978 he co-founded the Reason Foundation with Manny Klausner and Bob Poole. Today Machan holds the RC Hoiles Chair of Business Ethics and Free Enterprise at the Argyros School of Business & Economics at Chapman University in Orange, California. "I think that for Ayn Rand to have survived and made a life for herself, she almost needed that edgy personality, otherwise she would have been destroyed," says Machan, who was born in Hungary in 1939. At 14 years of age, his father smuggled Machan out of the country, fearing the Hungarian communist government. His background helps give Machan insight into how the intellectual mind of Ayn Rand functioned. "Her unpleasantness," he says, "ultimately can be fully justified given the treatment she was given when she came out the Soviet Union, told the truth about that country, and nobody paid attention." In 2000, Machan wrote Ayn Rand exploring all the major themes of Ayn Rand's philosophical thought. Approximately six minutes. Interview by David Nott, camera by Alex Manning, and editing by Hawk Jensen. This is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand. Tibor R. Machan: The Myth of Animal Rights 2/5 Professor Tibor R. Machan, PhD, Philosopher, Chapman University, California, USA The Myth of Animal Rights (Part 2 of 5) 13 July 2007, University of Heidelberg In the concern about how human beings treat animals, whether as pets, as prospective nourishment, or for medical research or experimentation, one school has proposed the idea that animals have rights like human beings do (Tom Regan, The Case of Animals Rights, 1984), while another school has proposed that the well being of animals should be considered in a utilitarian assessment of how they ought to be treated (Singer, Animal Liberation, 1975). I aim to argue here that the concept of "rights" has not be shown to apply to animals in anything like the way it applies to human beings. Looking at the conceptual foundation of basic rights, especially a la John Locke, rights are founded on the moral nature of human beings, specifically on their moral agency. They identify, as the late Robert Nozick put it, our moral space. Given that animals have not been shown to possess moral agency, the basis of ascribing to them rights of the sort human beings possess is lacking. As to the utilitarian case associated with Peter Singer, I will only mention, briefly, that Singer's ultimate foundation for ethics does not support any kind of normative stance toward animals, given that he is fundamentally a non-cognitivist or conventionalist. I shall develop these ideas and consider some objections to my position. www.vorlesungen ...
