The wonderful Birgit Nilsson in one of Verdi's greatest operas. Though she truly didn't have the low register for the role, she had the powerful voice and dealt well with the coloratura. Her bel canto technique is also put to the test in this aria, with high Db taken completely clean.

Raina Kabaivanska: Verdi - Macbeth, 'Una macchia è qui tuttora!' Raina Kabaivanska (Bulgarian: Райна Кабаиванска) (December 15, 1934) is a Bulgarian opera singer, one of the leading lyrico-spinto sopranos of her generation, particularly associated with Verdi and Puccini, although she sang a wide range of roles. Born in Burgas, Bulgaria, she studied in Sofia with Prokopowa and Jossifow, and made her debut at the Bulgarian National Opera in Sofia as Tatjana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in 1957. The following year, she left for Italy for further studies with Zina Fumagalli-Riva in Milan and with Giulia Tess in Vercelli. Two years later she made a breakthrough in Fano, Italy, as Nedda in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. In 1961, she gave her first performance at La Scala in Milan, as Agnese in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda, opposite Dame Joan Sutherland. She sang widely in Italy, Genoa, Venice, Parma and notably in Turin in 1973, as Elena in I vespri siciliani, in the only production ever directed by Maria Callas. In 1962, she made her debuts at both the Royal Opera House in London, as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as Nedda. She went on performing at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Paris Opéra, the Vienna State Opera, the Budapest Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Dallas Opera, etc. She also appeared in a few opera films, notably Pagliacci, opposite Jon Vickers in 1968, Il trovatore, opposite Franco Bonisolli, in 1975, and Tosca, opposite ...

Maria Callas - Una Macchia (Studio Recording, Score Animation) Disclaimer- Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. Legend says that Verdi wrote certain roles such as Lady Macbeth and Abigaille to invite young singers to follow in the footsteps of the great divas of decades past such as Isabella Colbran, Giuditta Pasta, Maria Malibran, Giuseppina Ronzi de Begnis, etc. These roles required a diva to be a high soprano as well as a dramatic mezzo, both dramatic singing and coloratura ability. In this particular aria, the requirements of Lady Macbeth are evident, requiring a vocal range from low Cb (low B) to high Db, alternating tessituras from powerful low register like a contralto to very light high register like a coloratura soprano. These roles require a voice type known as an ASSOLUTA, or soprano sfogato, and the best representative fo that vocal fach in recorded history has been the great Maria Callas.
