Daniel Schnyder, Chamber Soloists Lucerne: Shourouk Chamber Soloists Lucerne Daniel Schnyder Shourouk (Ouverture of Arabian Nights) Daniel Schnyder (*1961) Daniel Schnyder is known as a composer/performer with a dynamic reputation in both jazz and classical fields. He recorded over ten CDs of his own music for Enja Records, Koch Jazz, CCnc, Universal, Arabesque and Red Records. As a performer Daniel toured and recorded with many well known classical musicians, world music artists and jazz artists. "Old conflicts can eventually become obsolete, as Daniel Schnyder's music proves. The Swiss saxophonist-composer makes nonsense of the idea that classical music and jazz belong in separate bins, or that a great deal of diplomacy should be devoted to uniting them. Even when he does not place his own soprano saxophone at the center of an orchestral work, where it stutters, spins and wails, his writing is improvisatory and fiendishly precise. (...) Born in 1961, he comes from a generation of composers who throw all kinds of music under their beds as they grow up and emerge in adulthood with a natural concoction." Justin Davidson, "Ending jazz, classical separation anxiety", Newsday, New York, April 10, 2004. Lucerne 2007: Abbado conducts Mahler 3rd Symphony Arnold Schoenberg Choir Vienna, Tölzer Knabenchor, Anna Larson, mezzo-soprano Lucerne Festival Orchestra Claudio Abbado This new Claudio Abbado recording on Medici Arts captures a very special night at the 2007 Lucerne Festival with the massive 3rd symphony by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). Ever since its debut in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been enthusiastically received by public and press alike. The orchestra is the realisation of a dream for Claudio Abbado, who handpicked famous soloists, chamber recitalists and orchestral musicians to form this ensemble. Time and again it has been praised for its extraordinary sound and refined playing in the finest spirit of chamber music under the direction of the exceptional Italian conductor. The line-up includes such luminaries as Kolja Blacher and Sabine Meyer, alongside sundry members of the world's great orchestras. The cello section alone boasts Natalia Gutman, Clemens Hagen and Valentin Erben. On this DVD, the viewer can join in the imposing experience of a live performance of Mahler's No.3 with its awesome silences and towering climaxes recorded in the acoustically superb Congress and Concert Hall Lucerne in August 2007. Mahler completed the symphony in 1896 and it counts among the longest ever composed, with a performance lasting at least one and a half hours. The popular work became famous through Luciano Visconti's film "Death in Venice", where the catchy "Midnight Song" from the Fourth movement serves as a ...

"Invisible Alps" Amanda_escapes's photos around Lucerne, Switzerland A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Lucerne, Switzerland by TravelPod blogger Amanda_escapes titled "Invisible Alps". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Amanda_escapes's travel blog entry: "Our flight, after connecting through Barcelona again, landed in the afternoon. We caught the train from the airport to the main train station, and hunted down the next train to Lucerne. As soon as we got off, Ben spotted a train going to 'Lausanne'. It is quite common for cities to be spelt differently in different countries, although this doesn't make sense to me. And it makes it hard to know where you are going sometimes! Ben: I think that one is going to Lucerne! Amanda: I think the Swiss spell Lucerne LUZ-something. Ben: We better check the board. It turned out the Swiss spell Lucerne Luzern, So it's lucky we didn't get on that train going to Lausanne! Equally luckily, there was train leaving for Lucerne in 10 minutes, and we managed to get seats even though there were heaps of people standing in the entry bits. Obviously they didn't look very hard. Although looking for seats on those kinds of trains is a pain, because this one had two levels. See how many sets of stairs you haul a heavy bag up and down before you give up and stand in a corner. Two very tired Aussies resulted in catching the bus to the hostel, pizza for dinner and an early night. The hostel is quite good, with the best pillows we've had in a long time. Predictably, the next morning was for ...

Lucerne - a gem in the heart of Switzerland Goethe described Switzerland as a combination of "the colossal and the well-ordered." One is always sure that the trains and letters will be on time. The tidy, just-so precision of Swiss towns is tempered by the lofty splendor of the landscapes that surround them. Fresh mountain air, clear blue lakes and clean cultured cities make Switzerland a dream come true. A gem at the heart of Switzerland is Lucerne, lapped by scenic Lake Lucerne and surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains - its striking skyline epitomizes the very essence of Switzerland. It is often considered to be the true "Swiss" capital. Charming Lucerne has an 'Old Town' center of 15th-century buildings with painted facades, towers, a 17th-century Renaissance town hall, old squares and picture-perfect medieval bridges adorned with rooftop art. Any tour of Lucerne must begin with the 14th-century covered Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), the oldest road bridge in Europe, angled around the octagonal mid-river Wasserturm (water tower). Constructed in 1333 as a part of the city's fortifications and named after St. Peterskapelle (St. Peter's Chapel), which is located nearby, the wooden bridge has come to stand as the symbol of Lucerne. The principal historical interest of the bridge lay in its collection of double-sided triangular roof ceiling panels, painted by Heinrich Wägmann in 1614 with scenes from the city's historical past and mythological events, including the biographies of the city's patron saints, St ...
