FEM of a cell migration (fourth model) This fourth model of describes two cycles of the crawling in the cell migration process. Both of them have four stages. In the first one, the protusive force and the internal stress increase linearly. After that each other stay constant during 100 seconds. In the third stage, the force and the internal stress also decrease linearly and finally there is a time of relaxation.
PY106 pre-class video for session 28 - Polarized light In this video, we discuss polarized light (specifically, linearly polarized light, which is also known as plane polarized light). We go over, generally, ways in which light can be polarized, and then we talk about how to handle situations in which unpolarized light, or linearly polarized light, is incident on a polarizer. Specifically, we go over how to calculate the intensity of the light emerging from the polarizer, assuming you know the intensity of light incident on the polarizer. Finally, we wrap things up with a brief look at how reflection and scattering can produce polarized light, and what polarized sunglasses do.
Playing with Real-D 3D Glasses Two Real-D 3D glasses are held in series. The back of the glasses acts as a linear polarizer, and the front as a waveplate, converting linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light. The first pair is held stationary. When the second pair is held behind the first, light from behind first becomes linearly polarized by the front of the second pair, then hits the two linear polarizers on the backs of each pair, eliminating all the light with all four combinations. When the second pair is held IN FRONT of the first, the light is first linearly polarized, then becomes circularly polarized and immediately linearly polarized once again.

Basic Definitions of Linear Algebra #1 The Professor gives the definitions of a vector space, a linearly independent set, and a linearly dependent set. In the definition of linearly independent the condition should read \alpha_1=\alpha_2 = ... = \alpha_k =0$. He says this but does not write it on the board.

2D Rayleigh-Benard thermal convection, contrasty version The temperature data for this simulation is normalized to the interval 0-255. From 0 to 123, the temperatures interpolate linearly from pure blue to 50%blue/50%green (teal). From 123 to 128, the temperatures interpolate linearly from teal to pure green. Then from 128 to 133 pure green to pure yellow. The rest of the spectrum is linear from pure yellow to pure red. This colormap helps provide a visual cue of an important feature of the flow pattern. While green occupies only a tiny portion of the temperature spectrum, look at what happens when that portion of the temperature spectrum dominates the spatial distribution of temperatures.

Khe Sanh 1: Trapped, incompetent USMC saved by the USAF The insubordination of the USMC bureaucrats for refusing to build the McNamara sensor line [Lines work--ask the Finns who held off the entire Soviet Army at the Mannerheim Line, the French in Algeria with the "Morice Line" etc.] to keep the NVA out of South Vietnam cost the dumb-ass, high school, kid lower-ranking marine enlisteds dearly--when their Gomer-Pyle drill team, parade ground lemming mentality was unable to defeat the professional enemy non-linearly with mere foot-slog, gunslinging and caused them to get surrounded on their forward operating base (FOB) at Khe Sanh. The sad truth is that the 1 mph, rucksack-laden, foot-slogging, low-skilled, white-t-shirt, sleeves rolled up, narcissist marines with M14/M16 rifles wanting WW2-style frontal beach assaults were no match for the field-craft skilled, well-camouflaged, 4-7 mph, non-linearly-mobile North Vietnamese Army (NVA) regular with AKMs, RPGs who hustled-in his crew-served, 12.7mm heavy machine guns to down bloated CH-46 choppers and could not defeat the enemy to secure a border line. Rather than taking Rome plow tractors and carving out a free-fire swath at the DMZ with the help of USAF Ranch Hand defoliant planes and facing their battlefield weaknesses head-on and SOLVING them, the USMC bureaucrats decided to hide amongst the closed terrain vegetation, knowing full well they'd have a built-in excuse for their inevitable failure that the job of interdicting their portion of the Ho Chi Minh ...
Blum 06 - Fun with an LED! In this mini project, an LED is controlled by the state of a photoresistor, a potentiometer, and a digital switch. The LED blinks on and off at a rate determined by the value of the potentiometer. When the switch is in one position, this is a simple on-off blink. In the other position, the light generates a sawtooh wave, linearly increasing in brightness towards the max brightness, then back down again. In either of these cases, the potentiometer can control the speed of the LED's variations. The LED's intensity is determined by the photoresistor. In a very bright room, the LED will be instructed to blink between 0 and it's max brightness. In a pitch black room, the LED will change state between 0 and only 10% of its max brightness. The brightness which it achieves varies linearly with the brightness level in the room. As before, this affects both the saw tooth and square wave modes.

Canadian M113A3 Gavins Up-Engined Trucktards Whine! CFB VALCARTIER, Quebec -- Upgrades to the M113 Gavin making it equivalent to the American "M113A3" version give it more horsepower, and even more maneuverability since horrific wheeled LAV-III losses moving linearly along roads/trails in Afghanistan and constantly getting stuck have revealed to the non-Trucktards that TRACKS are the way to move non-linearly on the non-linear battlefield. There are still an ignorant Trucktard minority in Canada that whine and cry about the failures of wheeled trucks in the face of mere rebels with a few guns and old artillery shells but they are dying off faster than the poor young Soldier victims are who they condemned with their French avant garde' stupidity that somehow the laws of physics would be different for them and their air-filled rubber-tired trucks unlike the 11 decades of wheeled failure experienced in the first place. Notice in the video the Canadian Gavins driving THROUGH WATER AND MUD nearly up to the hull top that a LAV-III/Stryker would get mired in! Maybe trucktards are "fair weather play soldiers" while REAL SOLDIERS are ready to fight in any clime or place! Want to know more? Real-D Polarization (2) Real-D 3D glasses, used for 3D movies such as Avatar, work by taking circularly polarized light from the screen, giving it a phase shift to make it linearly polarized and finally with a pair of linear polarizers splitting the image so each eye sees a different image. Light from the laptop LCD screen is linearly polarized, therefore the effects of the glasses can be tested on it. When holding the glasses forward, the light hits the wave retarder first, giving the light a phase shift, making it circularly polarized and preventing the linear polarizers from blocking any light. Colours change due to imperfections in the material. When held backwards, the light hits the linear polarizers first and is extinguished at the proper angle. Also of note is that both lenses have the same angle of polarization, as both extinguish at the same time.

Bifringence and Polarization Art (using laptop light) When linearly polarized light passes through a transparent material, the polarization of the light rotates, as the tape acts as what is known as a bifringent material. The amount of rotation depends on the thickness of the material and the wavelength of the light. As such, when a linear polarizer is placed in front of the material, different colours will appear at different rotation angles. This is demonstrated in the video as tape is placed on a clear sheet in various thicknesses. The clear sheet is then placed on a laptop screen, which is a source of linearly polarized light. A linear polarizer is rotated in front of the sheet, and the colour of the tape changes with rotation, and at no point is all of the light blocked in the taped areas, as it should be with the polaroid sheet. NOTE: essentially same as other video, except comes out much clearer.
