  • Francesco Marconi, Edgardo's solo scene, Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor, Act 3 (rec. 1908) Italian tenor Francesco Marconi (1853 [or 1855] - 1916) in Edgardo's solo scene, "Tombe degli avi miei...Fra poco a me ricovero...Tu che a Dio spiegasti" from Act 3 of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. The recording was made in May 1908 for Gramophone & Typewriter Company. The following biographical notes on Marconi come from Wikipedia: "Francesco Marconi hailed from Rome. He enjoyed an important international career during his heyday. In 1924, a reputable biographical dictionary of musicians called him 'one of the most renowned and esteemed singers of the last 50 years'. Along with his great contemporary Francesco Tamagno (1850--1905), he is the earliest Italian tenor to have left a representative legacy of acoustic recordings. Born of humble origins in Rome, "Cecco" Marconi worked as a carpenter in his youth. The promising quality of his voice came to the attention of a singing teacher, Ottavio Bartolini, who gave him his first lessons. Later, he studied with a much more prominent pedagogue, Venceslao Persichini, at the Rome Conservatory. Persichini also taught Marconi's coevals Antonio Magini-Coletti (1855--1912) and Mattia Battistini (1856--1928)—both of whom were outstanding baritones that enjoyed major international careers. Marconi made his operatic debut in the Spanish capital of Madrid in 1878 at the Teatro Reale, singing the title role in Faust by Charles Gounod. His debut was a success, and he was soon appearing regularly at Italy's premier opera house, La Scala ...

  • Chopin Opus posthum 72/1 e-moll.mp4 Martin Dalheimer performs Chopins Opus posthum cis-moll nocturne in his little music academy on a Ibach upright from 1910. Glinka says by being asked how to play Field or Chopin: "...fingers has to fell as if to where rainsdrops, scattering like pearls on velvet.." Martin Dalheimer is able to play in Chopins and Fields singing voice with all its nuances which includes expressive playing, eratic varied limpidity, tenderness, gracefullness, clarity and the nowadays often forgotten interplay of the polyphone melodies. But why got these things lost? It cannot be too strong emphaised that nine***th-century pianos differed almost as much from these of today as from the harpischords. Their pure, transparent tone and above all, their relatively easy action made the pianists task someting quite different from what it was to become after the changes which where forced on piano-makers of today There sweet silvery tone and immediate response to infinitely small gradations of touch are very different to what pianos tody sounds. Martin Dalheimer regulatetd his Ibach especcially to play in such easy and wounderfull kind like pianos of the 19th century. So it ist abel for him and for his pupil to play Chopin how he sounded really.
  • American Soprano Florence Hinkle ~ Good-bye (1913) American soprano Florence Hinkle (c.1880-1933) / Good-bye (Whyte-Melville; Tosti) / Recorded: December 22, 1913 -- The following is from the 2003 Lawrence F. Holdridge Record Auction Catalogue: Referred to as "without question the leading concert soprano of her day" by composer and critic A. Walter Kramer (1890-1969), Hinkle began her career in Philadelphia, subsequently studying with Oscar Saenger in New York, and with bass singer Herbert Witherspoon (1873-1935), whom she married. For about 20 years she sang throughout the United States in concert and oratorio. One of her triumphs was as soloist in the American premiere of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 ("Symphony of a Thousand") with Leopold Stokowski conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra on March 2, 1916 at the Academy of Music. Hinkle was wildly applauded: ".... above the crescendo of applause could be heard members of the chorus crying 'Hinkle!'" Her voice was described, again by Kramer, as "a lyric soprano of exceptional purity and limpidity, the top voice so enchanting as to be almost indescribable." From 1906-1917 Hinkle recorded some 41 sides for Victor's Black, Purple and Blue labels. If memory serves correct, she appears on a small number of Edison cylinders. Hinkle held annual matinee concerts at Aeolian Hall, where in December 1918, according to a review in the New York Times, "a picture in black velvet and diamonds", she gave more than two hours of songs and encores, including works by Purcell, Fevrier ...

  • Acipitrum insulA Bent Casio PT87 At first the art of music sought purity, limpidity and sweetness of sound. Then different sounds were amalgamated, care being taken, however, to caress the ear with gentle harmonies. • Saraswati Park - an interview with Anjali Joseph Buy her novel now A tremendous first novel from an exciting young author. Feted for its electric chaos, the city of Bombay also accommodates pockets of calm. In one such enclave, Mohan, a middle-aged letter writer - the last of a dying profession - sits under a banyan tree in Fort, furnishing missives for village migrants, disenchanted lovers, and when pickings are slim, filling in money order forms. But Mohan's true passion is collecting second-hand books; he's particularly attached to novels with marginal annotations. So when the pavement booksellers of Fort are summarily evicted, Mohan's life starts to lose some of its animating lustre. At this tenuous moment Mohan - and his wife, Lakshmi - are joined in Saraswati Park, a suburban housing colony, by their nephew, Ashish, a diffident, ***ually uncertain 19-year-old who has to repeat his final year in college. As Saraswati Park unfolds, the lives of each of the three characters are thrown into sharp relief by the comical frustrations of family life: annoying relatives, unspoken yearnings and unheard grievances. When Lakshmi loses her only brother, she leaves Bombay for a relative's home to mourn not only the death of a sibling but also the vital force of her marriage. Ashish, meanwhile, embarks on an affair with a much richer boy in his college; it ends abruptly. Not long afterwards, he succumbs to the overtures of his English tutor, Narayan. As Mohan scribbles away in the sort of books he secretly hopes to ...
