This is part of a larger project the goal of which is to set up a resource for endangered language communities when dealing with the challenges of lexical innovation within their language community. You can learn more about this project here: www-rohan.sdsu.edu Bangla, or Bengali, is the seventh most spoken language in the world. It is the state language of Bangladesh. Building Japanese FrameNet: A lexical resource based on cognitive knowledge What is our knowledge of language all about? As language has diversified so much in recent years, how much can computers understand human language? With this question in mind, the Ohara Laboratory is doing research on natural languages. The research is based on the idea that computers can be a starting point for looking at human language. That is, the problems that computers have in processing language reflect the key features of human ability to process it. So by looking at problems of language processing by computers, its true nature will become clear. Q. "When you look up a dictionary, what you find is definitions such as left is the opposite of right, and east is the opposite of west. But to understand the meaning of each word involves not just knowing purely linguistic meaning of the word like that, but also having encyclopedic knowledge of it. So in our descriptions of the meaning of words, we want to incorporate such encyclopedic knowledge, including common sense and scientific knowledge, which is not usually found in dictionaries. Thats the aim of our project." In kana to kanji conversion by computers, the accuracy has currently improved to over 90%. But getting a computer to understand the meaning of words, which changes subtly depending on the situation, is a problem thats yet to be solved. For example, the Japanese phrase kurumadematsu can mean wait in the car or wait until someone comes. A person can judge which of the two is meant from the words that precede ...

Lexical Gaps I have wanted to do this video for a long time. Finally got off my ass and did it. Happy Christmahannukwanzadan, or Festivus for the rest of us. Before you start yelling at me about being an expert on the Romanian language (which I am not), all that information was obtained from Florian Virtosu. Take it up with him, you can have a brilliantly educated discussion on how to use his language. I know bugger-all. I can't even pronounce most of it xD Any other interesting lexical gaps you know of? I might do a follow-up video with some other good ones, cause I LOVE them. :D

Doo-Wap (Non-Lexical Vocables In Music) Typographical animation representing the use of non-lexical vocals in music Typography is the visual part of a text. It plays an essential role: writing could not exist without its graphical aspect that gives it to see, whatever the system (alphabetical, ideographic or mixed). Typography is closely related to writing: it gives to read and reveals the sense of a text. It defines itself as the text's "servant". Expressive typography (such as the one used - among others - by Massin and Herbert Lubalin) consists in investing the letter with a function that goes beyond the simple transcription of a text. The letters visually express the oral language and incarnate it by playing with their body and their fatness but also their orientation (whispering, shouting). After having heard that scat (song without words, peculiar to jazz, using onomatopoeias rather than words to improvise, just like an instrument) was a vocal form that described emotions going "beyond words", I thought it would be entertaining to try to transcribe verbally those forms of abstract interjections used in many musical styles, to produce an animation of their sound and their visual representation. The idea is to translate with signs known by many (Latin script) an international tongue that is not meant to be written (non-lexical vocals in music). In fact, it is a language used as a basis for music teaching (before learning how to play an instrument, isn't it necessary to know how to sing it?). Many musicians ...
