Beards of India (Part 2) - Road Junkie Snippets 52 In ancient India, the beard was allowed to grow long, a symbol of dignity and of wisdom (cf. sadhu). The nations in the east generally treated their beards with great care and veneration, and the punishment for licentiousness and adultery was to have the beard of the offending parties publicly cut off. They had such a sacred regard for the preservation of their beards that a man might pledge it for the payment of a debt. A beard is the collection of hair that grows on the chin, cheeks and neck, but not the upper lip, of human beings. Usually, only pubescent or adult males are able to grow beards. However, women with hirsutism may develop a beard. When differentiating between upper and lower facial hair, a beard specifically refers to the facial hair on the lower part of a man's chin (excluding the moustache, which refers to hair above the upper lip and around it). The Greek word for beard: "pogon" is the root of a number of technical and humorous words relating to beards. For example the study of beards is called "pogonology", giving rise to "pogonologist" and similar words. Those terms are fairly respectable because the study is non-trivial (in fact challenging) and apart from constituting a specialism in the field of dermatology, research pogonologists commonly are employed by major producers of cosmetic products and equipment. Perhaps less seriously, other words relating to beards have been coined. For example some dictionaries now list ...

Eating Tagasaste Leaves--unlocking the food Tagasaste--apparently pronounced "tag-a-sas-tee"--is a wonderful shrub with so very many uses. Its botanical Latin name is Chamaecytisus palmensis. Common names are Lucerne Tree and Tree Lucerne. It is originally from the Canary Islands. In my video, I discuss how the young tender leaves of tagasaste can be used and enjoyed as human food--in salads, soups, sandwiches, etc. I mention, too, how the pretty spring flowers of this leguminous, drought-resistant tree will provide some nectar for honeyeating birds. The tagasaste tree has many uses, apart from the abovementioned ones of human green vegetable and bird nectar. Let's here list some of the many virtues of tagasaste: Edible leaves for humans Honeyeaters attracted to the blooms Seeds eaten by birds Attracts bees Decorative and attractive shrub Pretty white flowers with some fragrance Drought-resistant Frost-hardy Leguminous--so fixes nitrogen in the soil Fast growing Fire-resistant--can be planted as firebreaks High production fodder crop--eaten by hares, rabbits, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, sheep, cattle, goats, deer, horses, poultry and pigs Can be dried as hay Makes good fuel as firewood Permaculture species Good hedge plant and bird corridor In this video, I also read a short extract from Laurence C. Snook's book, "Tagasaste Tree Lucerne: High Production Fodder Crop", published by Night Owl Publishers in 1986. He says: "The foliage of tagasaste is rich in the proteins, minerals, and vitamins lacking in the diets ...

Hottentot Bean--unlocking the food... Here we are, again, looking at the Schotia afra tree I grew from a (GIANT!) bean seed. (I started mine off in a pot.) Schotia afra are also known as Hottentot Bean or Karooboerboon or Karroo Boer-bean. Apparently they are from the Cape Province of South Africa. An attractive leguminous shrub, they grow to about 12' high. They have pretty red flowers that are rich in nectar--so they will be popular with the Australian honeyeating birds, here. The long pods contain large edible seeds. The bean-like seeds are eaten fresh while still partly green; or boiled or roasted when dried. They were recorded as having been eaten by Stone Age Man; as well as recorded as food used by African peoples. These trees have many virtues : ♥ Very drought-resistant ♥ Very heat-resistant ♥ Quite frost hardy, once established ♥ Very tough tree ♥ Leguminous--so would improve the soil ♥ Have attractive flowers that yield nectar for honeyeaters and bees ♥ Are evergreen ♥ Beans edible for humans ♥ Good permaculture species .....

Nursery bed composting in Danamatanahalli, Karnataka AID India's Prasanna Saligram and Vatsala Anekal discuss and demonstrate the process of nursery bed composting with Shashiraj in Danamatanahalli, Karnataka. The process includes the work of four hired laborers. Dry biomass is placed in water for 24 hours before being piled into a nursery bed. Ash and soil are mixed, and leguminous plants are planted in the compost heap to increase the nutrient properties of the biomass. This intensive method of composting requires 1.2 tons of biomass per gunta (1/40th of an acre).
