There is a Languor: (Bk. 2) by Virko Baley from Emily Dickinson Songbooks (2001-2008) These seven songs are part of a long-term project titled the Emily Dickinson Songbooks. There are now two such books, each containing six songs and a third one half completed. Over the years, the poetry of Emily Dickinson has become increasingly important for me. I am particularly struck by their tonal intricacies and complex juxtaposition of opposed or perhaps even irreconcilable thoughts and feelings. After composing a series of long and structurally complex works (Dreamtime, Treny I-IV, Symphony No. 1: Sacred Monuments, A Journey After Loves) I wanted to write shorter works that would allow a more direct connection to an emotional center. Each song is composed around a central musical metaphor, usually stated in the piano. The vocal line is both part of it and separate. Because many of the early songs in the series were essentially of strophic nature, I originally wanted to call the series "urban folk songs". But as the number of songs grew so did their nature. This series is open ended; my only structural precondition is to organize them in a series of books, each containing 6 songs, each book organized around some sort of narrative (Book 2 is dedicated to my favorite wife, Patricia). Rêverie d'avril dans le mineur d'A, Sonate No. 1 pour la cannelure et piano par Peter Dewar-Finch The April Reverie represents a Languorous emotional fugue. A balmy spring day, the scent of blossom in the air wafts through an open window and blows across the composer as he sits at his piano, hands poised on the keys awaiting inspiration and without thought begins to play. Somehow, Inspiration blew into his mind as well as the room and, keeping the supporting chords as neutral as possible to reflect the stillness of mind and mood, as well as to hide anger and frustration, he moves the fingers of his right hand to allow them to describe their melody, which has already been ascribed to flute, the only instrument mellow enough, bright enough and silvery enough to describe this mood of Languor, and yet frustration and physical pain of circumstances. The idea transferred to the page is not complete, it can never be completed, but here it pauses......

INDIAN JEWELRY: SWANS [Official Video] Houston pedal-pushers Indian Jewelry meld the noisy atmospherics of shoegaze, the druggy languor of Spacemen 3, and the portentous tribal drones of Drum's Not Dead-era Liars on "Swans", from 2008 album "Free Gold!". In other words, judging by sound alone (the lyrics are mostly indecipherable, anyway), the track is more likely to be about its namesake band than its namesake bird. Directed by Ivan Shumaker, the video makes the most of its arid, apocalyptic desert setting, lingering lovingly over scrub-brushed hills and *** dunes. Long shadows fall over the band members, who play solemnly, wearing shades and/or Native American-style garb, beneath a threatening, almost alien cloudscape.
