IBM 1401 System 50th Anniversary [Recorded: November 10, 2009] Announced in 1959, the IBM 1401 was widely adopted by business and institutions around the world. By the mid 1960s, half of all computers were 1401s or members of its family. The 1401 was one of IBMs earliest transistorized computers and introduced thousands of businesses to stored-program computing while its tape and disk systems freed them from the decades-long practice of storing data on punched cards. Known as a small-scale computer, a 1401 system weighed between 2-to-4 tons, dissipated 12000 watts, and was built out of over half a million parts. In today's dollars, a typical system rented for $ 45000 a month or could be purchased for $ 3.4 million. The 1401's popularity was due in part to its legendary peripherals, including its chain-based 1403 printer whose fast speed and outstanding print quality made it into an industry workhorse. Live at the Greek Theatre - 6. Down Under (Colin Hay) August 2nd 2008. "Down Under" (also known as "Land Down Under") is a pop song recorded by Men at Work for their debut album Business as Usual (1981). The song went to #1 on American, British, and Australian charts. It was reissued in 1982 and is the only Men at Work song that went to #1 in the UK. It has become a popular and patriotic song in Australia. The lyrics are about an Australian traveller circling the globe, proud of his nationality and about his interactions with people he meets on his travels who are interested in his home country. One of the verses refers to Vegemite sandwiches, among other things, and this particular lyric has become a well-known phrase. Colin Hay told Songfacts: "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that." The flute part in the song was based around the tune of "Kookaburra", a well-known Australian children's rhyme. Originally, "Down Under" was released as the B-side to "Keypunch Operator", a rare custom-pressed single by Men at Work - some of the guitar melodies from that version were further developed into flute parts on the later release. Men At Work's first single was 'Keypunch Operator', released in 1980 and making little impact. Another single titled 'Down Under' was a limited release and sold only at the band's gigs in Melbourne. The original version of 'Down Under' was recorded at a slow pace and showed no commercial potential whatsoever. Keypunch Operator - The Source ......And just who is The Source?? The Source was a power pop band from North Canton, Ohio that was together from 1980 through 1986. In that time they released one LP, one dance single, and two EP's. ( A strange form of vinyl from the last millennium, an EP was only about 25 minutes long). Their two EP's charted nationally on the CMJ college charts. (#17 and #12 respectively). The members of The Source were: Jim Bailis - drums Craig Schroeder - guitar Jeff Kerekes - guitar Jack Wyles - bass This was our second video, done in 1983.
