  • NME Big Gig 2009 - The Cure Live @ The O2 Arena These are strange times for NME. Two weeks ago, the magazine posted sales figures of fewer than 50000 copies a week, down 25 per cent on the year before. Yet it can host gigs that fill the O2 arena. Rock fans patently don't think much of the way NME writes about concerts, but they love the way it organises them. This four-band gig, held on Thursday and headlined by The Cure, was in effect a continuation of the previous night's party: on Wednesday it had been the NME's annual awards ceremony. First on stage on Thursday were White Lies, a black-clad trio from London who sound like Depeche Mode with guitars, and whose debut album went to No1 in January. Their death-fixated songs (sample titles: To Lose My Life; Death) proved not much more cheering live than on record. It's not often you see a band who make you think, "Oh well, The Cure are on later that'll lighten the mood." The second act, Crystal Castles, were more fun, although no jollier. Partly the fascination lay in the glowering weirdness of the duo's music a hybrid of slow, menacing synths and clattering beats but mostly it lay in watching the singer, Alice Glass, who has no eyebrows but sports roughly eight square inches of black eye shadow, and who spent the set writhing around as if undergoing exorcism. Franz Ferdinand thoughtlessly disregarded the evening's doomy theme, wearing no easily discernible make-up and playing enjoyable songs about subjects other than the swallowing void that awaits us all. On record ...

  • The Jollier I Will Be by Kid Mercury LYRICS Growing up I was filled with misery always mopin' depressed as can be I was askin' God what is wrong with me why is this my destiny but now when I look back it seems to me that I shouldn't take life so seriously 'cause what used to be a tragedy has become a comedy and so the older i grow the jollier i will be adam duritz told me that the price of a memory is the resonating memory of a past tragedy but mr. duritz what you said ain't complete so i must amend what you said to me 'cause if your memory's a tragedy with hindsight that can be a comedy and so the older i grow the jollier i will be *scat singing* but even if i could, i wouldn't change the past why is that you might ask 'cause its memory lets me see what it means to be free and that's what gives me my energy 'cause the more of the past i learn to see the jollier i will be *scat singing* tomorrow i dont know what it will be maybe it will be a tragedy but i dont mind, cause i know that's what precedes every great comedy yeah that's how the cycle has to repeat that's how tragedy gets its meaning and so the older i grow the jollier i will be *scat singing* the chord positions for the verses and chorus are G Em Bm D. the chord positions for the bridge at C Am Em G. these chords are played with the capo on the third fret. the chord progression borrows from aimee mann's "that's just what you are," which uses a similar chord progression, but in a different key.

  • I'm on Fire - Bruce Springs*** - Ukulele interpretation / cover More of an interpretation than a cover, I've had a lot of fun playing this. A slightly jollier version than the original - I hope I haven't taken too many liberties. I dropped a few of the C#m chords in favour of A and B because I preferred the way they sound. And I have taken a real liberty with the ending, which bears no relationship to the original. After weeks of indecision I've decided to upload this despite the rather annoying wardrobe malfunction! (Bloody button-up flies! Sorry.) I tried to re-record it but it was never as good as this version. This song was either slightly too high or too low for my limited range. I couldn't transpose it because then I couldn't use the A and B chords in the way I do, which - I think - sound good here. And I couldn't use a capo because the 12th fret is as far as I can go on this ukulele and I wouldn't have been able to play the ending I have used. The only other option was to de-tune the uke and that's just a step too far! So I opted to sing it high. I'm using a cheap Richwood Baritone "Ukulele" (UK-250-B) which I was given because it was broken (repair details here: I believe this is identical to the Mahalo Baritone. It doesn't sound bad but I consider this to be a small guitar with 4 strings rather than a ukulele. I didn't like it when I first got it going but I'm coming round to it now. It seems like a pretty good instrument for the money. I usually use two microphones (both old and cheap) through my MU10 but I ...

  • Red Faction 2 (PS2) Game Review Dear me, making terrible jokes within a minute of this review pretty much says it all, just wanted to get this one out the way. Next review should be a bit jollier... You'd think. Anyway, just in case the review isn't clear enough, the issue with this game is its lack of character. Whether it be in the guns (they're good but not good enough to separate it from other FPSs), characters, graphics, sound effects or music - the game feels pretty lifeless and dead. It's just shoot, shoot, shoot. Now a game can get away with this (hell, most of the time its preferable if it means not jumping though insane developers' puzzle hoops) but only if it has a comfortable sense of itself. Problem is, Red Faction 2 has no USP, no character and no soul. Unlike the Metal Slug games or Timesplitters games which have personality spilling out every orafice and which can work the whole 'shoot everything on screen' mechanism, with Red Faction 2 there's no motivation to. It's generic, bland and dull. The shooting through walls mechanism was a much greater hassle than unique and innovative feature as it made working out where to go a pain and really the less said about the single player mode the better. The multiplayer's fine, in fact there are plenty of games which make less of an effort so by contrast this game has a decent selection of maps and modes but the small number of playable and non-playable characters in any one game is disappointing and means that its easily surpassed by the likes of ...

  • Love the way you lie - [Twan] Rap [Part 1] I always seem to do raptuts for some reason... hmm maybe it's my thing... need to get learning then, wrote this in hour and half, sorry for the ending haha, i just wanted to hear the rest of the chorus :) So this is part 1 of three raps i plan to do.. meaning the whole length of the song, this first section of this song is just about me expressing just SOME of my feelings, the jollier stuff will come later. Lyrics Just tell me how we ever got here. Don't recognise me? It's me my dear. My eyes, my smile, can't you see that i'm sincere? How did we fall from being so strong? Did we stay on that same road, for way too long? I miss ya, i miss ya, i really wanna kiss ya. Guess we're through, can't even stand the sight of you. Thought you knew me? I though you did too. Till i sat here all alone, crying, shame on you. And i hate the fact, that we're done, that we're over. But i can't catch you like, ever ever sober. You say you need me, maybe i need you. Naw screw that, you knew what cha really had to do. I wanted you to be happy at first, but it's getting to the stage where i'm feeling more hurt, and i can't do this no more. My heart aches, bruised and sore. You had you're final chance. Screw romance.

  • Amazing Philippine Beauties Origins - 2003 It's hard to believe that when we started this project seven years ago, we simply wanted a venue or an event that would allow us to scout for beautiful transgenders whom we can recruit for the show as performers. It was what we called a "baranggay" contest. No funds, no resources and we did everything ourselves. Two of our jollier performers were hosts, the assistant director was voice over, and everything else was makeshift. Now, seven years later, we have gotten the reputation as a "world-class" pageant where preparations are tedious and resource hungry. No regrets though, this annual event is one of our pride and joy so far as entertaining our audience is concerned. This video is something i dug up preparing for this year's search for amazing philippine beauties 2009.
