Cubbie Station As Nell says, Cubbie was a sheep/cattle property for a hundred years before the cotton came . With the always constant drought where you get one good year in 5 if you are lucky. How would you expect to consistently get the water for the 7 mile long dam? It worked for sheep and the local workers, for the British AP Company employed hundreds on their many hundred year leased propertys. CUBBIE STATION I have heard it said that the coming of cotton down on Cubbie Station has been the making of Dirranbandi. Hang on a minute, the Cubbie Station I knew and grew up with Was a thriving pastoral company out station. The Headquarters at Noondoo Station at Dirranbandi was where the General Manager ruled over the far flung stations under the APCompany. They leased land for 100 years. On Noondoo , Cubbie and Bumblebend there would be employed Managers, Overseers, Cooks , Housemaids, Cowboys (cowmilker/gardener) and Bookkeeper. Besides in seperate living quarters were the Stockmen. It was like home to those who lived there. They always said Ill go down to Cubbie As well there were the Boundary riders huts, where the familys grew up and were assured of a job on one of the APCoy stations. The Stockmen were under Cubbie Station Managership, and looked after the sheep and cattle. There were also Jackaroos, men who stayed till they had the qualifications to run their own properties. We actually left the town much earlier than inended and spent a lovely day at Moondarra dam, a lovely reservoir that supplies the city. Its an absolute pleasure to immerse yourself in cold water whilst navigating the hot innards of this country. We slothed out and enjoyed the wildlife too; kites catching fish in thier talons and the local feral kids on a canoeing trip. The next 1000kms or so was West. Via the Barclay Homestead/Roadhouse where we unashamedly cheered on the Barbarians rugby team in their rather epic defeat to the Aussies. Summary of Northern Territory so far. Flat, empty, hot. See photo. And then... a junction in the road!! 3 Ways junction where we joined the North-South Stuart Highway and the 1200+kms to Darwin. Our first stop being at an old cattle station cum campsite, Banka Banka. This was, as everwhere now, filled with Grey Nomads in their caravans towed by 4*4s. Friendly bunch. Turning around I saw a piebald pony bolting with a pie-cart. This horse had taken off from in front of a hotel in Margaret street. As the horse raced along a continuous stream of pies fell out the back of the cart and were scattered down the middle of Ruthven street, all the way to the School of Arts. I stepped off the footpath and grabbed the horse by the head, I threw him cart and all. As the horse went over both shafts of the cart were broken , and I laid there hanging onto his head . he was squealing and trying to get up .so I got free pies for some time Back to Dirranbandi thirty shillings by train On reaching Dirranbandi, it was back to Cubbie station. Yes it was great to be home again Cubbie station was always very good to me. Some of my old mates were still on Cubbie station: Ernie and Keith Pollock.
