Marine isopod Zuzara venosa Another cute critter. This one's Zuzara venosa, a marine isopod (garden slaters are isopods too). This species occurs in SE Aus in Vic, Tas and SA. This one was filmed at Bambra Reef, Roches Beach, Lauderdale, Tasmania. When it curls up, flipper-like organs sticking out the side. In the video it uncurls and rights itself.

Aquatic Isopod in a stream This funny little creature is a relative of the more familiar "pillbug" or "roly poly" that can be found living on land under rotten logs or rocks all over the world. Just like land-living pillbugs, the aquatic version is a harmless scavenger, and cannot bite or sting. Pillbugs and aquatic isopods are crustaceans, related to lobsters and crabs.

Spore Creature Creator Video: Isopod (Woodlouse) This video was created using the Spore Creature Creator. Call it an isopod, pill bug, potato bug, sow bug, or roly-poly.... its still a cool creature called a woodlouse and is actually a crustacean and related to crabs. This guy was originally made for a contest where you had to make a creature that could survive on an arid planet. You can check him out here:

There's some artwork of Great Cthluhu provided by Stealthy of and the pictures of isopod were courtesy of so give those people some LOVE. The rest is all down to us. The protagonist of this song is played by Mr. Dominic Green of Brontosaurus Chorus ( and Pop-Art (), returning us the favour of covering their song late last year. How To Culture Isopods This is how I culture my Isopods for my tarantula cages! Isopods are very helpful for tarantula cages because they eat all leftover vegetable matter in the cage that is left by the tarantula. Thanks for watching! I do sell Isopods. email me at Mojosmf@ for a good starter set.

Giant Isopod Bathynomus giganteus (la jaiva) Newly discovered ocean creature. It measure 2 feet long.

Deep Sea Isopod UPDATE: This doesn't make sense :D Sorry about that... but the way this was made was that we had to make a bug in 3ds max, then make the animation and story later, which is kind of a bummer because he could've had a much better screen debut. Anyways, it was from my time in Cert 4 in Screen Animation at the AIE (www.aie.edu.au)

Isopods Deep Sea Isopods (Bathynomus giganteus) are gigantic relatives of garden pill bugs that live on the sea floor in certain parts of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico. They have an oblong body, four sets of jaws and very large compound eyes. At maturity, they can grow up to 18 inches in length and weight up to three pounds. They mainly live at 1200 feet or greater.

Breaststroke Isopod I saw this little guy at a depth of 4100 meters about 100 miles west of Santa Barbara. Looks like it's swimming the breaststroke. To read more, see my blog entry: My scientist friend, Karen Osborne, tells me "That is a bathyopsurine, possibly Bathopsurus or Paropsurus. They are really rare - I've only seen 3 in my 5 years here working on munnopsids, the isopod family they belong too."

Bathynomus Giganteus: Hideous Monster From The Bottom Of The Sea click for our exclusive video. A giant isopod may be one of approximately nine species of large isopods (crustaceans related to the shrimp and crabs) in the genus Bathynomus. They are thought to be abundant in cold, deep waters of the Atlantic.Bathynomus giganteus, the species upon which the generitype is based, is the largest known isopod and is the one most often referred to by the common name "giant isopod". French zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards was the first to describe the genus in 1879 after fishing a juvenile male B. giganteus from the Gulf of Mexico; this was an exciting discovery for both scientists and the public, as at the time the idea of a lifeless or "azoic" deep ocean had only recently been refuted by the work of Sir Charles Wyville Thomson and others. Females were not recovered until 1891. Giant isopods are of little interest to most commercial fisheries owing to the typical scarcity of catches and because ensnared isopods are usually scavenged beyond marketability before they are recovered. However, in northern Taiwan and other areas, they are not uncommon at seaside restaurants, served boiled and bisected with a clean lateral slice. The white meat, similar to crab or lobster in texture, is then easily removed. The species are noted for resemblance to the common woodlouse or pill bug, with which they are related. The few specimens caught in the Americas with baited traps are sometimes seen in public aquaria.

Isopod Woodlice Nature Walks with Mark Fraser Just imagine right in your own back yard lives a crustacean! Just like a crab or a shrimp but this species of Isopod crustacean is called "Wood lice". Not the friendliest sounding name but they are a harmless adaptable little species feeding on decaying plant matter. Isopods are a success story and there are over 4000 species worldwide. They have adapted to take advantage of the moisture under logs, leaves and compost piles allowing them to no longer need to live underwater like the rest of their family. They are a great species avoiding predators from birds to Centipedes and the infamous Woodlice Spider. So the next time you flip over a log or some leaves and spot one of these amazing little creatures remember they are not insects but our own back yard crustaceans! I'm Mark Fraser and to learn more about exploring our amazing natural world and trying to protect it visit my website One Earth, One chance...
