Receiving Intraocular Lenses or Intacs as an Alternative to www.toronto- Some patients may not be the right candidates for LASIK or PRK procedures. YELC does, however, offer alternative treatments and procedures to aid in bettering eyesight. Intraocular lenses can be inserted straight into the eye during a surgical procedure. An implanted intraocular lens has the ability to fix very high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Another alternative to LASIK are intacs, which are tiny segments of plastic that are inserted into the cornea. Though intacs were originally developed to treat low degrees of nearsightedness, they have been found to be especially effective in people with unusually- or irregularly-shaped corneas. The intacs are able to smooth out the cornea, improving vision. CATARACT SURGERY: INTRAOCULAR LENS AND ASTIGMATISM The AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL addressed this challenge with two key features. Innovative STABLEFORCE® haptics keep the lens highly stable and centered in the eye (haptics are the "arms" on the IOL that hold it in place). At the same time, the patented biocompatible material of the AcrySof® IQ Toric lens naturally binds to tissues in the eye, for even more stability. Studies have shown that these biomechanic improvements result in minimal lens movement, giving AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL patients clearer, more reliable vision. Plus, with the lens' new aspheric design, cataract patients with astigmatism can enjoy improved image quality, possibly better than they've ever experienced.

Intraocular Lens Implant Intraocular lenses, commonly called IOLs, may be one of the most important ophthalmic developments in the past 30 years. These tiny prescription lenses are placed inside the eye during cataract or Clear Lens Extraction And Replacement surgery (CLEAR), replacing the eye's natural lens (called a cataract when it becomes clouded).

Avoid LASIK Complications - Visian Phakic Intraocular Lens Upon learning about dry eye and other LASIK complications, this myopic patient explores the benefits of phakic IOLs. With IOLs, no eye tissue is removed, and no flap is cut in the cornea. To avoid the risk of LASIK complications, she chooses Visian IOLs, and is extremely happy with her decision. Intraocular Cyst Removal, Retinal cyst surgery Retinal cysts can be the precursors to retinal detachments. If the vision is blurry, that is a clear indication that the ophthtalmologist should check as soon as possible. If the cyst expands to include the macula (area needed for clear vision) or if it is associated with a retinal hole then treatment is needed. This treatment may involve laser application to prevent a retinal detachment or actual surgery to reattach the retina, if it is already in the process of detachment. Other Retinal macrocysts are an occasional finding in patients with long-standing retinal detachments. The cysts usually do not require any specific treatment during procedures to repair retinal detachment and resolve spontaneously after retinal reattachment. However, if the cyst is adjacent to a retinal break and prevents its closure, the retinal reattachment procedure can fail. There is a technique using the Nd:YAG laser to perforate the retinal cyst postoperatively, which allows for subsequent break closure and retinal reattachment.

Visian ICL: The Intraocular Contact Lens Visian ICL (Intraocular Contact Lens) is the latest alternative to LASIK, SBK, and Epi-LASIK. The Staar Collamer Phakic Implant corrects 3 to 16 diopters of nearsightedness with an almost instant return of stable, sharp, clear vision. James Lewis, MD, of the Wills Eye Surgical Network and The Pennsylvania College of Optometry, narrates and performs this surgery. Originally the ICL was considered for patients not suitable for LASIK. It is now considered an alternative that may be better than LASIK for many. There are less halos, starbursts and glare and absolutely no dry eye, regression or corneal issues after surgery. Dr. Lewis uses the Zeiss Visante™ (OCT: Optical Coherence Tomographer) to assess the patients both pre and post-operatively.

Scleral Suture Fixation of Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Elderly patient who had cataract surgery several years ago. One year previous to this surgery she fell and ruptured her left eye. Another surgeon repaired the rupture and removed the superior iris. She did not tolerate contact lenses. Her macular edema was treated. Because she had no support for an anterior chamber or posterior chamber intraocular lens, this lens was sutured behind the iris. This technique allows the knots from the prolene suture securing the intraocular lens to be rotated into the eye. The scleral flap covering the knots, hopefully, reduces the risk of infection after surgery.

IOL-VIP - Intraocular Lens for Visually Impaired Pe This is a hugely exciting breakthrough that has the potential to offer hope of restoring some of the vision lost in conditions affecting the central macular region of the retina. The term IOL-VIP stands for intraocular lens for visually impaired people. Conditions for which the IOL-VIP may be effective are the following; * Dry age related macular degeneration * Stable, inactive or previously treated wet (exudative) age related macular degeneration * Myopic (short sighted) macular degeneration * Macular holes * Inherited macular diseases such as Best's & Stargardt's dystrophy The macula is the central area of the retina and as such is responsible for reading and detailed vision. Damage to the macula from any of the above sources can lead to devastating central visual loss limiting ordinary activities such as recognising faces, reading, coin recognition and driving. Traditionally magnifying 'low visual aids' have been dispensed in order to help patients to cope with this type of visual loss. Many people however find these 'low visual aids' cumbersome and sometimes ineffectual. Up until now there has been little or no provision for true vision enhancement in patients with these disorders. The IOL-Vip system has been developed by low vision specialists and eye surgeons in order to enhance macular function in patients with macular disease thus frequently allowing for an improvement of their central vision. In this procedure, two small lenses are inserted into the eye. Working ...

Eye Surgery with Intraocular Lenses A blessing for people with severe myopia and hyperopia Most people with marked vision defects believe that they are stuck wearing glasses or contact lenses for the rest of their lives. However, intraocular lenses can be a much less cumbersome solution. Implanted in the eye itself, they correct the vision in much the same way as external lenses. Some people even find that their vision is better with intraocular lenses than it was with their glasses or contacts. Available at Cliniques Michel Pop. Intraocular tumor Surgery, Melanoma Eye cancers can be primary (starts within the eye) and metastatic cancer (spread to the eye from another organ). The two most common cancers that spread to the eye from another organ are breast cancer and lung cancer. Other less common sites of origin include the prostate, kidney, thyroid, skin, colon and blood or bone marrow. Melanomas (choroidal, ciliary body and uveal) -Early stages has no symptoms (the person does not know there is a tumor until an ophthalmology examination). As the tumor grows, symptoms can be blurred vision, decreased vision, double vision, eventual vision loss and if they continue to grow the tumor can break past the retina causing retinal detachment. Treatment: Laser therapy Plaque therapy Radiotherapy Enucleation of the Eye Evisceration Eyewall resection Chemotherapy Choroidectomy
