Pérotin "Alleluia nativitas" Pérotin (fl. c. 1200), also called Perotin the Great, was a European composer, believed to be French, who lived around the end of the twelfth and beginning of the 13th century. He was the most famous member of the Notre Dame school of polyphony. He was one of very few composers of his day whose name has been preserved, and can be reliably attached to individual compositions; this is due to the testimony of an anonymous English student at Notre Dame known as Anonymous IV, who wrote about him and his predecessor Léonin. Anonymous IV called him "Perotin Magister", which means "Pérotin the master or expert." The name Pérotin is itself derived from "Perotinus," the Latin diminutive of Petrus, the Latin version of the French name Pierre. ***** "Alleluia nativitas" Choral Alleluya V. Nativitas gloriose virginis is a three-part organum, which is attributed to the medieval French composer Perotinus (fl c.1200), who is also known as Pérotin. Written for three male voices, it contains many common aspects of organa composition, including particularly the frequent and interweaving juxtaposition of intervalic consonance with extreme discord. Following the tradition of tropes and sequences in the 10th and 11th centuries, organa were composed for feast days. They were used in both the Offices (small services held throughout the day) and the Ordinary of the Mass (The part of the mass that could use changeable texts). Alleluya Nativitas forms the Alleluia from the Mass of the Nativity of ...

John Coltrane: Trane's Slo Blues (Bass playalong) Here's a performance of my transcription of Coltrane's solo on "Trane's Slo Blues", from his album Lush Life. It's not as clean as I'd like it, but hey - it's Coltrane. I feel like I've learned a lot from this solo. His intervalic ideas are unlike anything else I've played. Now for an in-depth ***ysis, and to see how much of this I can apply to my own playing. Elrick Gold Standard (w/Bartolini pups & Aguilar OBP-3), Avalon U5 (no EQ)New transcriptions are also posted on my blog: , and there is an archive of my transcriptions at /archive.html. I also do custom transcription work - visit /transcriptions.html for details.

Ben Weber Rapsodie Concertante for Viola & Small Orchestra Part One Composer's notes for 1957 LP release: "It is a work composed within the limits of the twelve-tone row, though its evident romantic and expressive content might seem to give evidence to the contrary. The basic form of the piece is what might be called a Fantasia-rondo. The row material is presented immediately and clearly with no repetitions, andthe piece is off on its way. There quickly follows a short section with a simple rhythmic ostinato, which serves as contrast and could be thought of as a recurring rondo theme. It is also drawn from the original material, but each of its recurrences is more in keeping with intervalic and rhythmic repetition, so that a very recognizable 'section' is clear wheneverit comes back. The broader structures alternating are deeloped more in the manner of a Fantasia, with various appearances of the medlodic material in other instruments in contrast to the solo Viola, thus the use of the word 'concertante' in the title of the piece. The solo viola part is cast in rather long lyric lines, with many contrasts of register and is continually offered over a colorful musical background consisting musically of variously developed fragments drawn from the basic material of the music itself. The intent is one of dramatic nobility. The scoringis for a smallish orchestra: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Percussion, Harp, Solo Viola and eleven Strings. Ben Weber's Rapsodie Concertante Op. 47 was commissioned jointly ...

Simone Kermes - Per trionfar pugnando (Arianna e Teseo, Giuseppe de Majo) From Simone Kermes' fantastic new album "Dramma", dedicated to some of the most virtuosic castrati arias within baroque opera seria. Giuseppe de Majo wrote one of the most virtuosic coloratura arias for the castrato Caffarelli, considered by some to have been even greater than Farinelli in some ways. The challenge lies in the extremely wide vocal compass and wide intervalic leaps while conveying heroic bravura. I have included at the beginning of the video the scale (repeated twice) in modern notation - I transcribed it myself - that De Majo wrote for Caffarelli, which crosses from A3 to D6. It is truly virtuosic, and it really surprised me as I did not know of baroque composers that had written such held high notes (as most stop at high C or even high B-flat)

Allan Holdsworth Melodic Jazz Fusion Guitar Lesson Part 4 of 4 - Guitar Breakdown Allan Holdsworth - Melodic Jazz Fusion Guitar Lesson - Guitar Licks and Chords In this first part of the four part guitar lesson we will try and teach some Allan Holdsworth. Let me start by saying ... REALLY ... I'm actually attempting this? Yes, I am fully aware of how deep this pool I'm about to dive into actually is. And I won't even try and fool myself into thinking I can do his playing justice. But with that said, I will try my best. Allan Holdsworth is by far one of the (if not THE) most unique guitar players out there. From ultra smooth melodic lines to intense intervalic speed runs ... throw in a ton of complex chord shapes and a heavy dash of unorthordox thinking .... and Mmmm Mmmm ... I'm hungry. Transcribing and playing Allan Holdsworth guitar parts is incredibly challenging ... even to the most seasoned guitar player. But learning a simple guitar lick, or a single guitar chord voicing, or a single measure of melody line by mr Holdsworth is one of the most rewarding things I can think of. There have been very few guitar players that I have transcribed (Scott Henderson being one of the other guitar masters i'd include in this statement), that I've found myself ***yzing for hours after breaking down a simple 5 or 10 note lick. There is so much to be learned in everything Allan Holdsworth plays. In part one of this guitar lesson we will take a brief look at the chords being played under this solo. We won't dive too deeply into Allan ...

EAR TRAINING - Level 1: Memorizing Intervals Andrew answers this weekend's question about how to understand and practice relative pitch as well as the differences between Perfect Pitch and Relative Pitch... Viewers Question: Q: What is relative pitch - is it the same, or different than perfect pitch. Also, which one is best to learn as a guitarist and can you give any tips for practicing ear training techniques. - Martin A: Perfect Pitch is the ability to recognize the actual tonal name of a note from only hearing the given note being played; ie, Knowing that a note just performed was actually an "Eb." Relative Pitch is the ability to recognize the intervalic distance between two notes; ie, Hearing an "F" note then hearing an "Ab" after one another, and knowing that the interval between them is that of a Minor 3rd. IN THE VIDEO: Andrew discusses the way musicians can develop a keen sense of relative pitch through a series of association exercises. The ear training website mentioned in the video is: Andrew's Official Website: Follow Andrew on Blogspot Follow on Twitter: MySpace: Facebook:
