UQ Interprofessional practice: harness the power of healthcare teams Interprofessional education (IPE) is a process whereby students of various professional groups learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of patient care. IPE has been highlighted by governments and health professional associations that recognise optimal patient care requires a broad array of skills and attentions that supersede the scope of any one profession, and so involves interactions between various health disciplines. Institutes educating the health workforce need to develop, integrate and evaluate strategies to address these recommendations. The University of Queensland is committed to developing a process that fosters in every undergraduate student an understanding of and respect for the roles of members of different professions in the health care team, with a view to ensuring that such teams work effectively to deliver the best outcomes for the patient or client. Inter-Professional Team Work In a Health Care environment a patient may encounter dozens of professionals, from a whole range of varied disciplines, in a short space of time. In theory they should all combine together to provide the best outcome but all too often confusions and problems arise. This short video introduces a programme thats used to train all health and social care professionals in the University of Leicesters local region. The focus of this programme is on helping trainees to work alongside one another in multidisciplinary teams its not enough simply to know what each type of specialist does, they need to be able to work together in allsorts of combinations and in allsorts of environments and situations. This video visits Leicester Royal Infirmary, Northampton General Hospital, Prince Philip House, Mistrys Pharmacy in Market Harborough and Beaumont Leys and Stocking Farm Sure Start, to look at examples of effective inter-professional working and how the implementation of this approach can improve the outcomes for Healthcare service users. The video was produced by University of Leicester ITS Multimedia Services and is a joint initiative between The University of Northampton, De Montfort University, the NHS Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Workforce Development Confederation and the University of Leicester.

Simple Technology Facilitating Complex Communities: A New Paradigm for Interprofessional Education? Loretta Walz and Dr Lindsay Davidson of Queen's University. The Internet, and social media in particular, have in many ways made the world a smaller place. One can share their thoughts and stories with people on the other side of the globe in an instant. Social media is often thought of in this context -- connecting people at great distances in a visceral way. But one can also use these tools to build a strong local network and create networks to, and within local community environs. Used locally within existing communities or by linking disparate communities within a region, social media tools can help facilitate virtual face-to-face networking in a world full of timetable conflicts and "too busy to stop" professionals. This paper will describe how one interprofessional education (IPE) virtual patient pilot project came to realize that interprofessional practice naturally occurred once social networking technology was incorporated into the online environment/Entrada Learning Management System (LMS) we switched to mid project. The LMS enabled users to create and adapt online virtual patient communities, empowering them to become what's known in the sociology of Web 2.0 as prosumers -- both producers and consumers of online content.
