Inflammation and Obesity Inflammation causes obesity is certainly a going theme in medical research. Specifically, it looks as if inflammation causes leptin resistance through the increase of Suppression of Cytokine Signaling (SOCS3) molecules as well as increasing cortisol secretion. Much of this begins with consuming too much omega 6 fat in proportion to omega 3, which in turn causes overproduction of interleukin-6 and a massive overinflammatory cytokine cascade.

h1n12.wmv Press Release by Mangos*** Research and Development Center (Thailand) at Office of the Higher Education Commission, Bangkok. 8 October 2009 The researchers of Operation BIM, of the Mangos*** Research and Development Centre (Thailand), consisting of multi-disciplinary research scientists from Chiang Mai University and Prince of Songkla University as well as from Asian Phytoceuticals Public Co. Ltd. have created the special formula BIM that is comprised of the extracts of five Thai fruits and grains. The ingredients of the special formula BIM synergize with each other to reduce the effects of the cytokine storm that is the main cause of death by respiratory viruses or airborne viruses such as influenza, bird flu, SARS and H1N1 flu as well as the future possible mutated strains. When a respiratory virus infects a person, his body's white blood cells, in the process of fighting off the infection, will produce a cytokine called interleukin-1beta (IL-1) that communicates with other white blood cells to activate more immune cells. As a result, many types of cytokines, especially numerous are interleukin-1beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-), and other immunity substances are produced to fight the virus. This is a cytokine storm, and this dysregulated reaction causes the destruction of respiratory tissue. If this reaction occurs in the lungs it could lead to the flooding of the lungs (pneumonia) and clogging of the respiratory channels, causing death. Scientific tests ...

Breast Cancer and Interleukin-25 Have you ever wondered what the body is really capable of in defending itself against cancer? We all know that our bodies have a highly developed immune system, but what if normal breast cells could kill neighboring cancer cells? Sound too far-fetched? Not to researchers at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Apparently, we actually do have such a second line of defense, and it's become a hopeful new doorway to understanding how this disease can be more effectively targeted and treated. If you want the complex technical details behind this report go to a journal called Science Translational Medicine and look for the paper entitled "IL25 Causes Apoptosis of IL25R-expressing Breast Cancer Cells Without Toxicity to Nonmalignant Cells." Apparently as normal breast epithelial cells develop, they secrete interleukin-25. Interleukin- 25 has been known for some time to play a key role in our immune response to inflammation, which in the case of breast cancer, means killing breast cancer cells within its immediate environment. In other words, the breasts have an innate ability to defend themselves against cancer through the production of Interleukin-25. On the flip side of this discovery, I can't help but wonder whether this explains why so many of us live cancer free for decades before we become more vulnerable to it. And if you factor in how much our cells are exposed to on a daily basis to known carcinogens from radiation to ...

Natural Killer cell REAL TIME video of a Natural Killer Cell destroying a pathogen. NK cells play a major role in the rejection of TUMORS and CELLS INFECTED BY VIRUSES. They kill cells by releasing small cytoplasmic granules of proteins called perforin and granzyme that cause the target cell to die by apoptosis (programmed cell death). The more NK cells you have in your body the lesser risk of having viral infections and CANCER. INCREASE YOUR NATURAL KILLER CELLS with TRANSFER FACTORS Transfer Factor Tri-Factor Formula (pure) increases the activity of NK cells by 283% and 437% with Transfer Factor Plus (transfer factor combined with proprietary herbs) Another independent study conducted by the Russian Academy of Medical Science, comparing the kill rate in cancer cells between Transfer Factor with Interleukin 2, a synthetic drug given to cancer patients. Transfer Factor Plus kill rate is 97% while Interleukin 2 is 88%. This discovery has attracted the attention of The International Scientific and Technical Center (ISTC) of Russia. "Nothing has ever come close to TF plus in efficacy, everyone in the world should be on this product" - Dr Darryl See of World Health Organization tested NK cell function as well as Tumor Necrosis Factor/TNF in Stage 4 Cancer patients. Breast Cancer and Interleukin-6 Another step forward with Interleukin-6 was made by a biophysicist who decided to use a supercomputer to search thousands of molecular combinations. He is searching for the best configuration to block a small protein molecule (Interleukin-6) that is known to play a role in causing both breast and prostate cancer. Chenglong Li, Ph.D., a professor in the medical chemistry and pharmacology department at Ohio State University, will use this configuration to develop a drug to block Interleukin-6. Interleukin-6 is not all bad, however. It acts as an immune-response messenger that helps us fight infections, recover from burns, traumatic injuries, and other types of similar trauma to the body. But, in people who have cancer, their bodies fail to turn off this response and overproduce Interleukin-6. In this particular study, Interleukin-6 levels in women with various types of cancer were consistently up to 40-fold times the norm, especially women in later stage breast cancer or those who had metastatic or recurrent disease. So Dr. Li is trying to disrupt the cellular messages that trigger Interleukin-6 into action, by using a fragment-based drug design. In the report he says that, "There is an inherent connection between inflammation and cancer." So he is using combinations of three proteins to form a six-sided molecular complex, called a "hexamer" to interrupt the transmission of signals that incite the production of Interleukin-6. His finding builds on a 2002 study ...

Immuno Valley We were on our way to the lab when we saw a sign which said 'Immuno Valley'. We had no clue what this might be, so we started fantasizing... Neutrophils: They race down the mountain by binding different adhesion molecules. Neutrophils are the first to arrive at the site of infection. T-cells: Always fashionably late... T-cells follow the neutrophils to the site of infection but arrive ca. 7 days later. Tregs: Regulatory T-cells inhibit autoreactive T-cells to prevent auto-immune diseases. AIRE: There is also plenty AIRE (autoimmune regulator) protein expression. These also prevent T-cells from reacting to self-tissues. Interleukins: The interleukin butterflies flutter around and pass on messages from cell to cell. Cytokine storm: The immune response is too strong! A cytokine storm is approaching! B-cell: When activated by a T-helper cell, a B-cell starts producing specific antibodies. Complement: Especially C3-bee is flying happily around. Complement stings infected cells to lyse them.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Lower Inflammation and Anxiety by Len Saputo, MD Increasing omega 3 intake my lower both anxiety symptoms and proinflammatory cytokines. Medical students receiving omega 3 supplements for 3 months showed a 20% reduction in anxiety and 14% reduction in interleukin 6, a proinflammatory cytokine. An omega 3 deficiency is associated with increased anxiety, which is very common in the US. Other benefits of omega 3 fatty acids include being antiarrhythmic and anticoagulant, making healthy cell membranes, and helping lift depressive symptoms. Sources of these fatty acids include fish and krill oils and precursors include a variety of seeds and nuts such as flax, hemp, chia, and walnuts. For more information, please visit

Neutrophil chemotaxis in a microfluidic device [Folch lab] A gradient of interleukin-8 (a chemoattractant for neutrophils) is triggered by opening a microvalve in the first frame of the movie. The microvalve (round circle) connects the cell-containing chamber (top half of the image) to the chamber containing interleukin-8 (bottom half), thus allowing for diffusion of interleukin-8 from the bottom to the top chamber. As diffusion occurs, the cells see a gradient developing (an ***og of an infection) and they rush to the source of interleukin-8.
