Kinect Hand Detection This is a graphical interface inspired by the movie "Minority Report". It uses the Kinect sensor from Microsoft, and the recently released libfreenect driver for interfacing with the Kinect in linux. The graphical interface and the hand detection software were written at MIT to interface with the open source robotics package 'ROS', developed by Willow Garage (). The hand detection software showcases the abilities of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), a part of ROS that MIT has been helping to optimize. The hand detection software is able to distinguish hands and fingers in a cloud of more than 60000 points at 30 frames per second, allowing natural, real time interaction. Minority Report interface prototype Interactive wall. This is done for casual users in public spaces, where interaction is rather short (seconds? a few minutes?)... The key in such situations is the intuitiveness of interaction, and its capability of catching people attention. Based on computer vision.

Living Interface The topic of the project works between interactiondesign and the biology. It concerns the communication between animal and the machine. The animal represents the user of a system and has the possibility to intervene. The User of the System are the so-called „Daphnien". These organisms are placed under a microscope and form an interface in the system cycle. Thus they have access to all processes in the computer and are able to manipulate them. The animal communicates with the computer and the borders between technology and the animal world blurs. developed by Marc Nonnenmacher (FH-Würzburg 2007)

10/GUI - 10 Finger Multitouch User Interface Over a quarter-century ago, Xerox introduced the modern graphical user interface paradigm we today take for granted. That it has endured is a testament to the genius of its design. But the industry is now at a crossroads: New technologies promise higher-bandwidth interaction, but have yet to find a truly viable implementation. 10/GUI aims to bridge this gap by rethinking the desktop to leverage technology in an intuitive and powerful way. 10

Prefab: What if We Could Modify Any Interface? Imagine if every interface was open source. Any of us could modify the software we use every day. Unfortunately, we don't have the source. Prefab realizes this vision using only the pixels of everyday interfaces. This video shows the use of Prefab to add new functionality to Adobe Photoshop, Apple iTunes, and Microsoft Windows Media Player. Prefab represents a new approach to deploying HCI research in everyday software, and is also the first step toward a future where anybody can modify any interface. Presented by Morgan Dixon and James Fogarty at CHI 2010.

sixthsensea wearable gestural interface MIT Media Lab SixthSense is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. By using a camera and a tiny projector mounted in a pendant like wearable device, SixthSense sees what you see and visually augments any surfaces or objects we are interacting with. It projects information onto surfaces, walls, and physical objects around us, and lets us interact with the projected information through natural hand gestures, arm movements, or our interaction with the object itself. SixthSense attempts to free information from its confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality, and thus making the entire world your computer. Brain-Machine Interface Technology Enabling Control of a Robot by Human Thought Alone Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. (HRI-JP), a subsidiary of Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Shimadzu Corporation have collaboratively developed the worlds first*1 Brain Machine Interface (BMI) technology that uses electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) along with newly developed information extraction technology to enable control of a robot by human thought alone. It does not require any physical movement such as pressing buttons. This technology will be further developed for the application to human-friendly products in the future by integrating it with intelligent technologies and/or robotic technologies. During the human thought process, slight electrical current and blood flow change occur in the brain. The most important factor in the development of the BMI technology is the accuracy of measuring and ***yzing these changes. The newly developed BMI technology uses EEG, which measures changes in electrical potential on the scalp, and NIRS, which measures changes in cerebral blood flow, with a newly developed information extraction technology which enables statistical processing of the complex information from these two types of sensors. As a result, it became possible to distinguish brain activities with high precision without any physical motion, but just human thought alone.

Robo Rat - The Brain/Machine Interface A fascinating look at research being done into linking brain and body to computers. The 'BRAIN INTERFACE'. Whether that means controlling the computer, or the computer controlling you. Cyborgs sound pretty Sci-Fi but the real life applications of this research has far reaching consequences and possibilities for the future of the human race. It's no wonder DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) funds this type of research. Switch off fear, turn on pleasure with just the press of a button. Curing people with spinal cord injury. Creating physical sensations for video games. Remote controlled soldiers. This Clip shows the research being undertaken at Downstate Medical centre / State University of New York, headed by John Chapin Other research including the BrainGate computer chip which allows people with the chip implanted to mentally control their computers or robotic limbs. NTT's headset that controls movement and balance What are the moral and philosophical questions associated with this type of research? Is the Robo-Rat the Model for the Soldiers of the Future?

AirPiano - Musical Interface The AirPiano is an innovative musical interface which allows playing and controlling software instruments simply by moving hands in the air. Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages and ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key. This is also confirmed by LED feedback. The AirPiano Software allows easy setup, loading/saving presets and transposing notes. The AirPiano is still in its prototype phase and its concept of a virtual matrix might eventually be used for other applications and purposes. The AirPiano concept is filled as a Provisional US Patent Application (Number: 60/989986). Specifications: Polyphonic, MIDI protocol, Up to 24 keys / 8 faders, USB connectivity
