
Solid Polymer Electrolytes Solid Polymer ElectrolytesMost often, the term "electrolyte" refers to liquid solutions and melts of substances, although a lot of solid substances with ionic conductivity have been known for a long time. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) are substances with a polymeric structure. Polymers also comprise functional groups able to dissociate with formation of cations or anions. Their directed movement within the polymer structure determines its ionic conductivity. This phenomenon was discovered by Peter Wright, a chemist from Sheffield, in 1975. He proved that ethylene polyoxies (EPO) can serve as a basis for sodium and potassium salts, which leads to formation of solid polymer electrolytes. Michel Armand suggested using intercalated graphite compounds for electrodes, because lithium-polymer complexes can be used as solid electrolytes in electrodes structure. Lithium salt can be dissolved in a solvating polymer matrix for the direct interaction of cations and electron pairs. The complex is formed (as a result of favorable competition between the solvation energy and lattice salt energy) and becomes a good conductor at temperatures of 60-80° C.Nevertheless, the notion of the formation of a salt complex and the nature of the charge transport mechanism was not the same as in other solid electrolytes. Heart muscle fibres are elongated muscle cells con¬nected to each other end-to-end through highly specialised regions named the intercalated discs. Cardiac myocytes can have one or more nuclei, which normally are located in the central region of the myocyte. The number of myocyte nuclei depends on species. This means that the number of nuclei is not the same as the number of myocytes! Because of the above factors, it is not possible to count the total number of cardiac myocytes directly in ordinary histological sections. The reason is that it is difficult to identify the intercalated discs and, also at times, to identify the lateral borders of the myocytes. A method is presented that uses antibodies to define the boundaries of the myocytes, thereby, allowing to estimate the mean number of nuclei per myocyte in local vertical windows from thin serial sections. A short demonstration of this method, where 16 serial sections are aligned using Tissuealign™, is presented. Furthermore, main results from the application of the method in growth hormone treated rat hearts are presented.

The 1906 Intercalated Games (so-called because they were the second games held within the IIIrd Olympiad) were held in Athens, as the first of an alternating series of Athens-held Olympics.
