  • Solid Polymer Electrolytes Solid Polymer ElectrolytesMost often, the term "electrolyte" refers to liquid solutions and melts of substances, although a lot of solid substances with ionic conductivity have been known for a long time. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) are substances with a polymeric structure. Polymers also comprise functional groups able to dissociate with formation of cations or anions. Their directed movement within the polymer structure determines its ionic conductivity. This phenomenon was discovered by Peter Wright, a chemist from Sheffield, in 1975. He proved that ethylene polyoxies (EPO) can serve as a basis for sodium and potassium salts, which leads to formation of solid polymer electrolytes. Michel Armand suggested using intercalated graphite compounds for electrodes, because lithium-polymer complexes can be used as solid electrolytes in electrodes structure. Lithium salt can be dissolved in a solvating polymer matrix for the direct interaction of cations and electron pairs. The complex is formed (as a result of favorable competition between the solvation energy and lattice salt energy) and becomes a good conductor at temperatures of 60-80° C.Nevertheless, the notion of the formation of a salt complex and the nature of the charge transport mechanism was not the same as in other solid electrolytes. They require a new model of processes in polymers which are traditionally connected with inorganic compounds and crystal structures. The standard model of research-type ceramic ...
  • Muscular System Rap Extra credit for my A&P class. Music by DboiCK Lyrics- You say you wanna be a doctor, nurse, or therapist? Well you gotta know your muscles from your head to your chest. Don't forget about the ones in your abdomen, In your pelvis and your arms and your leg region. Movement and posture are things that muscles do. They keep you warm, help you breathe, And contract your heart too. You got about 640 Ain't got time for all that But I'll tell you about the skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Skeletal is first, movement's what they do. They're voluntary so you gotta tell em what to do. Skeletal fibers are long and striated, And the best part is they're multinucleated. Myofibrils made of actin and myosin, Myosin is thick and actin's thin Fascicles are groups of fibers together The epimysium keeps em bound forever. Tendons attach the muscle to bone Work all the muscles and you'll have great tone. Now that you've learned about the ones that help you move, Let's talk about the muscles that we call smooth. Smooth muscle has a spindle shape And it's non-striated so that makes em great They've got more actin than myosin, You can find em in your organs, vessels, eyes and skin. Cardiac is only found in the heart It's autorhythmic so you don't tell it when to start Count the nucleus, it only has one Got intercalated disks and gap junctions

  • Stereological estimation of the number of cardiac myocytes - challenges and solutions.wmv By Dr. AnneMarie Brüel, MD, Department of Biomedicine - Anatomy, Aarhus University, Denmark and Dr. Johnnie Bremholm Andersen, Senior Application Scientist, Visiopharm. Heart muscle fibres are elongated muscle cells con¬nected to each other end-to-end through highly specialised regions named the intercalated discs. Cardiac myocytes can have one or more nuclei, which normally are located in the central region of the myocyte. The number of myocyte nuclei depends on species. This means that the number of nuclei is not the same as the number of myocytes! Because of the above factors, it is not possible to count the total number of cardiac myocytes directly in ordinary histological sections. The reason is that it is difficult to identify the intercalated discs and, also at times, to identify the lateral borders of the myocytes. A method is presented that uses antibodies to define the boundaries of the myocytes, thereby, allowing to estimate the mean number of nuclei per myocyte in local vertical windows from thin serial sections. A short demonstration of this method, where 16 serial sections are aligned using Tissuealign™, is presented. Furthermore, main results from the application of the method in growth hormone treated rat hearts are presented.

The material isposed of cobalt oxide layers in which the lithium is intercalated. During discharging the lithium intercalated between the layers is set free as lithium ion.[55] Nickel-cadmium[56] (NiCd) and nickel metal hydride[57] (NiMH) batteries also contain significant amounts of cobalt; the cobalt improves the oxidation capabilities of nickel in the battery.[56] Cobalt-based blue pigments have been used since ancient times for jewelry and paints, and to impart a distinctive blue tint to glass, but the color was later thought by alchemists to be due to the known metal bismuth. Miners had long used the name kobold ore (German for goblin ore) for some of the blue-pigment producing minerals; they were named because they were poor in known metals and gave poisonous arsenic-containing fumes upon smelting. In , such ores were found to be reducible to a new metal (the first discovered since ancient times), and this was ultimately named for the kobold. Toronto-based Sherritt International had a rough ...

  • Depth perception Dr Pauline Bennett & Dr Amanda Wilson, Kings College, London Runner up British Heart Foundation Reflections of Research competition 2010 Heart muscle cells connect to each other through a complex, undulating membrane system called the intercalated disc. Special junctions allow the muscle cells to communicate with each other with chemical, electrical and mechanical signals. This communication is vital for co-ordinating the beating of the heart. In this video we step through the depths of a high resolution electron microscope image from several different intercalated discs. Moving busily with protein filaments and packages of signalling chemicals, these show how dynamic the communications are between one cell and the next. "The connections between heart muscle cells are subject to a lot of strain. With the support of the BHF, were examining how the junctions between heart muscle cells are organised in healthy and diseased heart tissue." Dr Pauline Bennett

  • The Olympic Logo History Modern Olympics After the initial success, the Olympics struggled. The celebrations in Paris (1900) and St. Louis (1904) were overshadowed by the World's Fair exhibitions in which they were included. The 1906 Intercalated Games (so-called because they were the second games held within the IIIrd Olympiad) were held in Athens, as the first of an alternating series of Athens-held Olympics. Although originally the IOC recognised and supported these games, they are currently not recognised by the IOC as Olympic Games, which has given rise to the explanation that they were intended to mark the 10th anniversary of the modern Olympics. The 1906 Games again attracted a broad international field of participants—in 1904, 80% had been American—and great public interest, thereby marking the beginning of a rise in popularity and size of the Games. From the 241 participants from 14 nations in 1896, the Games grew to nearly 11100 competitors from 202 countries at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The number of competitors at the Winter Olympics is much smaller than at the Summer Games; at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin Italy, 2633 athletes from 80 countries competed in 84 events. The Olympic Games are one of the world's largest media events. In Sydney in 2000, there were over 16000 broadcasters and journalists, and an estimated 3.8 billion viewers watched the games on television sourse :
