This event took place on March 16, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series. In the fall of 1999, Donald was invited to give six public lectures at MIT on the general subject of relations between faith and science, during which he touched upon such topics as the interaction of randomization and religion, language translation, art and aesthetics, and the 3:16 project. During his talk at Google, Donald will similarly be focusing on the interactions between faith and science. Donald Knuth is a renowned computer scientist and Professor Emeritus of the Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University. He is the author of numerous books, including three volumes (so far) of The Art of Computer Programming, five volumes of Computers & Typesetting, and a non-technical book entitled 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated, and he has been called the father of the ***ysis of algorithms. Knuth is the creator of the TeX computer typesetting system and the related METAFONT font definition language and rendering system, that are extensively used for book publishing throughout the world. Donald is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering, and he is a foreign associate of the French, Norwegian, Bavarian, and Russian science academies as well as the Royal Society of London. An Exploration of Pen Rolling for Pen-based Interaction. We explore pen rolling as a supporting input modality for pen-based interaction. We have identified two important parameters: a) what separate intentional pen rolling for the purpose of interaction from incidental pen rolling caused by regular writing and drawing, and b) the range within which accurate and timely intentional pen rolling interactions can occur. We investigate the design space of rolling-based interaction techniques, through a number of scenarios where pen rolling interactions can be useful.

Epocrates Drug Interaction App on the Galaxy Tab Targets Doctors Tablets entering in the medical space is guaranteed, with their existing infrastructure its easy to see what companies like Epocrates have created an Rx drug reference application. At CTIA Wireless 2010 we got to see it up and running on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This native application allows quick access to thousands of drug monographs, formularies, drug-drug interactions, a pill identifier tool, and more. They can instantly access drug prescribing and safety information for thousands of brand and generic drugs. A key feature is the powerful Interaction component that enables you to check for interactions among up to 30 drugs at a time. Potential interactions are organized by clinical category to help the doctor determine the appropriate action.

Interaction Design at California College of the Arts Interaction design is one of the most important new careers! It is about creating meaningful and innovative designed experiences in the realms of work, lifestyle, and play. At California College of the Arts we are educating the next generation of interaction designers who will create the next wave of innovation. The Interaction Design Program introduces students to a deep understanding of people in order to envision and create real-world solutions and opportunities for human interactions—with, without, or mediated by technologies. Based on an experiential studio approach, the curriculum is human-centered, multidisciplinary, and collaborative. Faculty members emphasize craft and a creative, hands-on approach to invention, while giving students a combination of visual and systemic design skills. Students learn to design interactive objects, systems, games, services, and environments. Our students build an independent perspective on interactive experiences in order to make positive, lifelong contributions in the world. Directed, photographed, and edited by Byrd Mcdonald. These particles make up all visible matter in the universe. Every high energy physics experiment carried out since the mid-20th century has eventually yielded findings consistent with the Standard Model. Still, the Standard Model falls short of being a complete theory of fundamental interactions because it does not include gravitation, dark matter, or dark energy. It is not quite a complete description of leptons either, because it does not describe nonzero neutrino masses, although simple natural extensions do. • --- The HIGGS BOSON is a massive scalar elementary particle predicted to exist by the Standard Model in particle physics. UIST 2010: Enabling Beyond Surface Interactions (showcased at Siggraph 2010 E-Tech) We present a programmable infrared (IR) technique that utilizes invisible, programmable markers to support interaction beyond the surface of a diffused-illumination (DI) multi-touch system. We combine an IR projector and a standard color projector to simultaneously project visible content and invisible markers. Mobile devices outfitted with IR cameras can compute their 3D positions based on the markers perceived. The proposed techniques enable a collaborative multi-display multitouch tabletop system. We also present three interactive tools: im-View, im-Lamp, and im-Flashlight, which consist of a mobile tablet and projectors that users can freely interact with beyond the main display surface.

Competition, Predation, and Symbiosis | Biology | Ecology Purchase DVD here DVD Title Community Interactions: Competition, Predation, and Symbiosis. DVD Description Our Competition, Predation and Symbiosis DVD first describes the concepts of community, coevolution and ecological niche before looking at how competition results from overlapping niches. The program then examines predator-prey relationships and the various adaptations such as camouflage, warning coloration, mimicry and chemical warfare that have evolved as a result of these relationships. Symbiotic relationships such as parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism are then explored. A discussion of primary and secondary succession concludes the program.

Sketching and Experience Design June 1, 2007 lecture by Bill Buxton for the Stanford University Human-Computer Interaction Seminar (CS 547). Designing for experience comes with a whole new level of complexity. This is especially true in this emerging world of information appliances, reactive environments, and ubiquitous computing, where, along with those of their users, we have to factor in the convoluted behaviors of the products themselves. In this talk, Bill discusses the design process itself, from the perspective of methods, organization, and composition. Multi-Touch Interaction Research © 2006, Jefferson Y. Han Bi-manual, multi-point, and multi-user interactions on a graphical interaction surface. While touch sensing is commonplace for single points of contact, multi-touch sensing enables a user to interact with a system with more than one finger at a time, as in chording and bi-manual operations. Such sensing devices are inherently also able to accommodate multiple users simultaneously, which is especially useful for larger interaction scenarios such as interactive walls and tabletops. Since developing the FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) technique, we've been experimenting with a wide variety of application scenarios and interaction modalities that utilize multi-touch input information. These are far more interesting than the typical poking-of-the-touchscreen or the gross silhouette gesturing found in most interactive installations of this scale. It is a rich area for research, and we are extremely excited by its potential. The sensing technology is force-sensing, and provides unprecedented resolution and scalability, allowing us to create sophisticated multi-point widgets for applications large enough to accomodate both hands and multiple users. The drafting table style implementation shown here measures 36"x27", is rear-projected, and has a sensing resolution of ~0.1" at 50Hz. Applications receive stroke event information using the lightweight OSC protocol over UDP. visit - mrl.nyu.edu just trying the save nyu some bandwidth

Wired for Speech: Voice Interactions with People and Computers August 7, 2008 presentation by Clifford Nass for the Stanford University Office of Science Outreach's Summer Science Lecture Series. In this lecture, Clifford Nass describes how the human brain and body are "wired" for speech: The sound of a voice, whether from a person or machine, causes us to respond as we respond to actual people and to behave as we could in any social situation. In addition, Nass will discuss the speech interactions between humans and machines. Clifford Nass is the Thomas M. Storke Professor and Professor, by courtesy, of Sociology, and Director of the Communication between Humans and Interactive Media (CHIMe) Lab. The Stanford Summer Science Lecture Series is a set of informal lectures about cutting edge research from four of Stanford's most esteemed professors.
