Surface Technology Designed to Prevent Hospital Acquired Infections Medical professionals are desperately seeking ways to limit the growing number of patients who suffer from infections after they are admitted to the hospital. The CDC reports that 100000 Americans die every year from these infections. One solution may come from the ocean, and is being perfected in North Central Florida. Using shark skin as a model, Sharklet Technologies has created a surface material that is resistant to many dangerous bacteria. Sharklet Technologies CEO Joe Bagan explained how it works during the July 28 edition of Technology Spotlight during TV 20's 5:30 Live newscast. Sharklet Technologies is a biotechnology company that develops and brings to market surface technologies that are designed to inhibit or enhance microorganism growth to make the world a healthier, environmentally safer and better place. Inspired by the antimicrobial properties of shark skin, SharkletTM, the company's core surface technology, is the first no-kill, non-toxic surface developed to control bacteria including Staph a., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. coli. Sharklet may be used in healthcare environments and on medical devices to help prevent the development of biofilms and hospital-acquired infections. Sharklet technology addresses the challenge of infection control in the healthcare environment by improving the safety, performance and biocompatibility of surfaces that humans come in contact with. The company is headquartered at the prestigious Sid Martin ...

The Fluoride Ultimatum The Fluoride Ultimatum - DDT, Lead and Asbestos were all good for us once. Shortly fluoride will join them in infamy. Fluoride accumulates in your bones, making them brittle and more easily fractured, and in your pineal gland, which may inhibit the production of the hormone melatonin, which helps regulate the onset of puberty Damages tooth enamel (known as dental fluorosis) and may lower fertility rates Has been found to increase the uptake of aluminum into the brain and lead into blood Inhibits antibodies from forming in the blood Confuses the immune system, causing it to attack the body's tissues. This can increase the growth rate of tumors in people prone to cancer Recognizing this very poor risk-to-benefit ratio, many European countries have banned fluoride altogether. Yet, here in the United States, fluoride is added liberally to water supplies, and is even sold as "nursery water" to give to babies. Earlier this year, the American Dental Association finally capitulated to the facts and issued a warning about giving fluoridated water to infants under 1 year old... but nursery water, which is essentially fluoridated water, is still on the shelves and, believe it or not, is advertised as being "a first step to your baby's good health!" If you are just finding out about the dangers of fluoride and want to know more, The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson is an excellent resource. Overcoming Assumptions That Inhibit Spiritual Development Sufi Audiobook with Teaching Stories:A lecture by Idries Shah delivered before a live audience, plus teaching stories and narratives selected from Tales of the Dervishes This lecture,in audiobook format, delivered in 1976, was previously entitled A Psychology of the East.Idries Shah addresses the nature of assumptions, those that inhibit understanding and those that might be useful at certain stages of study but need to be set aside by the student at a later time in order to progress. This requires a flexibility of approach that is not customary in the West, one cultivated by study and exposure to Sufi ideas. It´sa very humorous and lively lecture, full of stories and anecdotes. Among the other topics Idries Shah addresses are the difference between emotionality and spirituality, the danger of looking for easy answers, and the way in which the paths of East and West are converging. This set od Sufi audiotapes includes a recording of teaching stories and narratives, selected and read by members of The London College of Storytellers, from Shah´s best-selling work, Tales of the Dervishes. 2 digitally-mastered cassettes, running time: approx. 2.5 hours
Grapefruit Peak Season for grapefruit is winter through early spring and is also when they have the highest concentration of nutrients, most flavorful and lower in cost. Grapefruits are good source of fiber and contain pectin a form of soluble fiber, that traps fats. Grapefruit pectin has been found to inhibit the build up of fatty deposits on the walls of our arteries. Other heart healthy promoting properties include potassium which regulates blood pressure, lycopene (in the red and pink versions) which has been found to inhibit free radical damage to LDL cholesterol, and that white coat that is under the skin contains flavanoids that may help lower LDL. Grapefruits are also an excellent source of Vitamin C and A which is very supportive to the immune system. Low calorie ½ cup of grapefruit is only 37 calories. For the tastiest version shop for ones that have smooth thin skins and feel heavy. They tend to be juicer too. You can tell if a grapefruit is ripe by how heavy and firm it feels, plus it should spring back when pressure is applied. Since they do not ripen once picked, its important to choose ones that are ripe. You can store grapefruit for up to 5 days on your counter and up to 10 days in the refrigerator. Some ways to start working this healthy food into your diet is simply by cutting it in half and having it with breakfast, peel and slice it for snacking, add slices to any salad and its especially good with spinach, avocado and shrimp salad ...
Strawberries Power To Inhibit Cancer Cell Growth Pterostilbene is yet another powerful antioxidant phytochemical that seems to affect metabolic processes to decrease development of both cancer and heart disease. Blueberries are an excellent source of this relative of the health-promoting resveratrol that is found in grapes and red wine. Phytochemicals seem to be a vital part of the benefits we get from berries. One study showed that strawberries power to inhibit cancer cell growth was unrelated to their antioxidant content, suggesting that the direct influences of the phytochemicals on cancer development are very important. Natural Cancer Cure? Tumor Inhibitor? Madrid, Spain: Compounds in marijuana inhibit malignant brain tumor growth in animals, and may provide a potential therapy for human glioma patients, according to a clinical review appearing in the September issue of Neuropharmacology. "Current therapeutic strategies for the treatment of [gliomas] are usually ineffective or just palliative," researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Madrid's Complutense University wrote. "During the last few years, several studies have shown that cannabinoids ... slow the growth of different types of tumours, including gliomas, in laboratory animals. Cannabinoids induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) of glioma cells [in vitro.] In addition, cannabinoid treatment inhibits angiogenesis (growth) of gliomas in vivo. Remarkably, cannabinoids kill glioma cells selectively and can protect non-transformed glial cells from death. These and other findings reviewed here might set the basis for a potential use of cannabinoids in the management of gliomas." Last year, a clinical review in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer made similar recommendations, noting that cannabinoids possess a "favorable drug safety profile" and have shown in clinical trials to inhibit various forms of cancerous tumors, including gliomas, lung carcinoma, breast cancer, skin cancer, thyroid cancer, lymphoma, and prostate cancer. Nucleotide Metabolism II This course is part of a series taught by Kevin Ahern at Oregon State University on General Biochemistry. For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu 1. Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) catalyzes the formation of deoxyribonucleotides from ribonucleotides. The substrates are ribonucleoside diphosphates (ADP, GDP, CDP, or UDP) and the products are deoxyribonucleoside diphosphates (dADP, dGDP, dCDP, or dUDP). 2. RNR has two pairs of two identical subunits - R1 (large subunit) and R2 (small subunit). R1 has two allosteric binding sites and the active site of the enzyme. R2 forms a tyrosine radical necessary for the reaction mechanism of the enzyme. 3. Ribonucleotide reductase is allosterically regulated via two binding sites - a specificity () binding site (controls which substrates the enzyme binds and which deoxyribonucleotides are made) and an activity binding site (controls whether or not enzyme is active - ATP activates, dATP inactivates). Specificity sites act in a generally complementary fashion. Binding of deoxypyrimidine triphosphates to the specificity site tends to inhibit binding and reduction of pyrimidine diphosphates at the enzyme's active site and stimulates binding and reduction of purine diphosphates at the active site. Binding of deoxypurine triphosphates tends to inhibit reduction of purine diphosphates and stimulates reduction of pyrimidine diphosphates. Don't confuse the active site with the activity site. The ACTIVE SITE is ...

Antibody find spurs fresh hopes for AIDS vaccine US scientists identify antibodies that inhibit HIV. Researchers at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health built on a decade of research in their recent discovery of two antibodies that are naturally produced by humans, which can neutralize 90% of HIV viral strains. NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci stated that the broad properties of these antibodies, which prevent most HIV strains from infecting human cells, make their discovery all the more exciting in being able to further speed efforts toward a preventive HIV vaccine for global use. Bravo and our sincere gratitude, Dr. Fauci, fellow National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases scientists and all others for your research efforts that have culminated in this valued find. Does Democracy Inhibit Long-Term Thinking? Complete video at: fora.tv Is democracy less conducive to long-term thinking as compared to other forms of government, such as monarchy? Alexander Rose, Executive Director of The Long Now Foundation, says yes. He describes democracy as a "churning system" that has inherent limits when trying to adequately plan for problems in the distant future. ----- Long Finance is an initiative begun in 2007 to establish a World Centre Of Thinking On Long-Term Finance. The initiative began with a question - "When would we know our financial system is working?" - which challenges a system that can't provide today's 20-year-olds with a reliable financial retirement structure. The aim of the Long Finance Institute is "to improve society's understanding and use of finance over the long-term." The research project proposals range from theory versus practice or fiscal versus monetary to sustainability versus robustness. The iconic project for Long Finance is the Eternal Coin, with the objective of starting a global debate about society's values over the long-term. This is the second event that Gresham College has co-hosted, where learning from the sister Long Now organization and its 10000 Year Clock Project. As the director of the Long Now Foundation, Alexander Rose has facilitated projects such as the 10000 Year Clock with Danny Hillis, the Rosetta Project, Long Bets, Seminars About Long Term Thinking, Long Server and others. Hugging Tightly: Human RNase Inhibitor RNase secreted from pancreas is necessary to digest RNA in diet to utilize as nutrients, but if they happen inside cells, it could disrupt crucial cellular functions. Human ribonuclease inhibitor is a horseshoe-shaped protein and inhibits human pancreatic ribonuclease by tightly hugging and completely blocking the active site of the enzyme. This complex is one of the tightest intermolecular interactions known (1Z7X.pdb ref. Johnson et al. JMB v368 p434).
What effect does a carbon fibre case have on the wireless signal strength of an iPhone 3GS? This is the sequel to I wanted a slim, strong, light case for my iPhone 3GS. What better material than carbon fibre? I guess this is why there's only 4 or 5 carbon fibre iPhone case manufacturers :)

Ayurstate for Prostate Care (Part 2) - Benefits, How it Works, 250 Synergistic Activities When you take Ayurstate capsules, you are costuming the highest concentration possible of 50 natural phytonutrients that exert 250 synergistic activities on your body to decrease the size of your prostate and reduce urethra inflammation by re-establishing healthy estrogen-testosterone balance, inhibiting conversion of testosterone to DHT, preventing protein deposits in prostate ducts, toning your bladder, and enhancing immune system response. It will improve your urine flow, semen production, and ejaculation control in a safe and natural manner with no side effects. Ayurstate re-establishes healthy estrogen-testosterone balance by supplying phytoestrogen compounds that mimic the action of estrogen. There is growing evidence that estrogens play a role in the etiology of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This is based on the fact that BPH occurs when men have elevated estrogen levels and their prostate tissue exhibits increased sensitivity to estrogen. Excess estrogen also reduces testosterone production by saturating testosterone receptors in the hypothalamus. Phytoestrogens compete with natural estrogens for estrogen receptors on cells. By binding to the receptors, phytoestrogens prevent the negative impact of estrogen on your prostate and discourage excessive estrogen production. Ayurstate also inhibits an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestoterone) which binds to receptors in prostate cells and stimulates tissue growth around the ...

RSA Animate - The Internet in Society: Empowering or Censoring Citizens? Does the internet actually inhibit, not encourage democracy? In this new RSA Animate adapted from a talk given in 2009, Evgeny Morozov presents an alternative take on 'cyber-utopianism' - the seductive idea that the internet plays a largely emancipatory role in global politics. Exposing some idealistic myths about freedom and technology (during Iran's 'twitter revolution' fewer than 20000 Twitter users actually took part), Evgeny argues for some realism about the actual uses and abuses of the internet.

At the conference, Uña de Gato was recognized as one of the most important medicinal plants of the whole world pharmacopoeia. The oxindole alkaloids found in the bark and roots of Uña de Gato have so far drawn the greatest attention for their effect on the immune system. A scientist, Dr. Klause Keplinger made their discovery in the 1980s. attention has been drawn on chanca piedra in the early 1980s after the report of its beneficial effect on hepatitis B. Subsequent studies provided mitigated results, probably due to variations in strains, origin and process of extraction. However, in 1992 a Japanese group discovered that a simple water extract of chanca piedra contained a compound able to inhibit an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme involved in the process of virus replication. A recent scientific study revealed that nearly 90% of dried Sangre de Drago ...

Heartburn/GERD/Acid Reflux and Protonics/Proton Pump inhibitors Again, you see a lot of ads on TV for Nexium and what they call protonics (medicines to inhibit peoples' stomach acid) and the fallacy is; most people who have acid reflux or heartburn don't have too much acid. If anything, they have an inadequate amount of acid - either a decreased or absent amount of acid. Now, how does that happen? Well, if you don't have enough acid in your stomach, you can't break down the protein properly to the amino acids, and you can get heartburn. The typical conventional response is to give you medicine to inhibit that stomach acid. When we test people, we have them swallow a capsule, put a belt around them while they read a magazine in a non-invasive way, and we're able to measure their stomach acid. As a matter of fact, 95% of people with acid reflux need stomach acid and the minute you either change the food they eat or the ability to improve their digestion, the acid reflux goes away. How many people with constipation can just (solve it by) resolv(ing) transit time (you should move your bowels every 12-18 hours)? Many times when that's delayed, food could just reflux back, and to inhibit that acid ... if anything, that inhibits function and causes other downstream consequences like chronic yeast problems, food and chemical sensitivities, and other things. You can't even absorb your foods properly! And they've done a study to show that when you give people medicine to inhibit your stomach acid, it really sets you up for osteoporosis and ...

BPH And Prostatitis Natural Remedies Part 3 http Another prostate-protecting food is fructose, the sugar in fruit that is used to sweeten many foods. Overall, its consumption is associated with a reduced prostate-cancer risk. Unlike calcium, fructose stimulates the production of a vitamin D form that inhibits tumors. Several trace nutrients that are often deficient in our diet also enhance prostate health. For example, a lack of zinc especially affects the prostate because this gland uses it much more than any other body part. By altering steroid hormone metabolism, zinc supplementation can reduce prostate enlargement. Interestingly, pumpkin seeds, a traditional folk remedy promoting male reproductive and prostate health, are rich in zinc. Selenium is another often-deficient trace nutrient that is essential for prostate health. Increasing selenium intake, whether through supplements or selenium-rich foods (eg, Brazil nuts), has been shown to reduce prostate-cancer risk. Other nutritional factors that may inhibit prostate cancer include vitamin D; vitamin E, an antioxidant that inhibits cancer growth; soy-based foods, which contain the cancer-inhibiting agent genistein; and garlic, which possess cancer-fighting, sulfur-containing compounds. Plant Hormones Plant hormones are chemicals that promote or inhibit growth in plants. There are 5 main types of plant hormones. Auxin, commonly abbreviated as IAA, gibberellins and cytokininins all promote plant growth. Abcisic acid and ethylene inhibit plant growth. These plant hormones are also produced synthetically and have many commercial uses.
