  • Johann Strauss II - Waldmeister - Overture Strauss's enthusiasm for the Waldmeister libretto, the work of the journalist and writer Gustav Davis (real name Gustav David, 1856-1951), manifested itself in an outpouring of fresh and inspired melodic invention. The score unequivocally gave the lie to those critics who had declared publicly that the "eternally young" Waltz King was exhausted, and who privately voiced the opinion that the composer's hitherto unquenchable creative flame had finally burned itself out. At the forefront of his musical ideas was an original waltz theme, which cleverly contained an inverted arpeggio of the first three notes in his famous Blue Danube Waltz (An der schönen blauen Donau op. 314 of 1867). Davis had initially discussed his plans for Waldmeister with Strauss during summer 1894, and the contract they signed with Alexandrine von Schönerer (1850-1919), directrix of the Theater an der Wien, required delivery of the completed musical score on 15 October 1895. Strauss duly adhered to the delivery date, advising Fräulein von Schönerer: "Never in my youthful years did I work so indefatigably". The composer was not disappointed, for Waldmeister was to enjoy an initial run of 88 performances in Vienna, and proved to be the most successful of his later stage works. There was general praise for the entire cast, and Alexander Girardi (1850-1918), in the rôle of the dialect-speaking Saxony Professor of Botany, Erasmus Müller, was again triumphant. (The following year the tenor buffo transferred ...

  • Nikola Tesla biography 6/7 Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, a little village near Gospić in Lika. Tesla was born on July 10th 1856. In the same year was born George Bernard Shaw, the Irish and English playwright, Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger, the first man who studied Krapina's early man as well as Sigmund Freud, the founder of psycho***ysis. Tesla's father was Milutin. He was a priest by profession. Their family name was not always Tesla. It had been Draganić, surname Tesla was given to them afterwards. Namely, allegedly one of Nikola's ancestors had extremely big front teeth that resembled carpenter tools ("Tesarski" alat) so he got the nickname "Tesla" after it. Most of Nikola's ancestors lived evidently longer that it was usual for a man's life so there was a tale that one of them died in the age of 140! Brother Dane's death Milutin was born in nearby Raduč in 1819 and he was supposed to be a soldier, as it was common in the Military Border (Vojna Krajina). His brother Josif was a soldier indeed, but Milutin enrolled seminary in Plaški and became a priest. Having finished seminary, he married Đuka Mandić, a girl from Gračac. In the beginning, Milutin worked in Senj parish (the church there is destroyed now), and from 1857 he was a priest in Smiljan (he had been only an administrator before). While working in Senj he had allegedly used to preach about "usefulness of work" so the Archbishop ordained him a red belt and Milutin became a parish priest. Nikola and Mandica were ...

  • smart. studio. Rome - Music - Rodion - Never Say Ever feat. Fabrizio Mammarella From small beginnings in a cellar studio, Latin newcomer Edoardo Cianfanelli, alias Rodion, is now helping Italo music to achieve a renaissance. Aside from the mainstream, he indefatigably produces a shrill mix of catchy disco tunes, funky club sounds and easygoing electronic music located somewhere between German synthesizer funk and the sound tracks from 1970s Japanese science fiction films. In a nutshell: horror movie meets cosmic music culture. http ...

  • DANCER #3 - Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company ACTOR #1 (2010) consists of three separate parts -- MASS, HUMINID and DANCER #3 -- which together form a single thematic entity. They are performed in three different rooms at the same venue. One of the starting points for this work was the history of the creation of the 'homunculus', the artificial miniature human that philosophers, alchemists and scientists have sought over the centuries since Greek Antiquity. ACTOR #1 is about genesis: what has, is or might come into being. Three variations on the metamorphosis from chaos to order. In DANCER #3 we see a robot trying to stand up straight; he always falls down again, but never gives up. He endures this process of trial and error cheerfully and indefatigably. His energy and clumsiness display the optimism of a clown who's always tripping over.
  • Apr 24 - Homily: Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen Saint Fidelis was born of noble parents at Sigmaringen in what is now Prussia, in 1577. In his youth he frequently approached the Sacraments, visited the sick and the poor, and spent many hours before the altar. For a time he followed the legal profession and was remarkable for his advocacy of the poor and his respectful language towards his opponents. Finding it difficult to be both a rich lawyer and a good Christian, Fidelis entered the Capuchin Order and embraced a life of austerity and prayer. Hair shirts, iron-pointed girdles, and disciplines were penances too light for his fervor. At Weltkirchen, where he was Superior of the convent during an outbreak of the plague, he devoted himself indefatigably to the care of the sick soldiers and citizens. Animated by a desire for martyrdom, he rejoiced at being sent with several fellow Capuchins on a mission to Switzerland, which the newly-founded Congregation of the Propaganda named him to preside. There he braved every peril to rescue souls from the errors of Calvin. When preaching one day at Sevis he was fired at by a Calvinist, but fear of death could not deter him from proclaiming divine truth. After his sermon, when leaving the city he was waylaid by a body of his enemies, who attacked him and tried to force him to embrace their so-called reform. But he said, I came to refute your errors, not to embrace them; I will never renounce Catholic doctrine, which is the truth of all ages, and I fear not death. On this they fell ...
  • Claude Ballif : Un coup de dés [1/6] Ballif's 1981 work for five choirs, two double basses, two percussionists, two kettledrums, and electronic tape. Part 1 of 6. With "Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard". Mallarmé had already opened the way for music. Using different typographical characters for each "deal" or "throw" - one cannot speak of verses or sentences, and hardly even of clauses -, the poet had acknowledged his intention of "orchestrating" the blank page. And even in availing himself of double pages as distinct units, from the point of view of both the sense and the figure designed on each page (and thus of the visual, pictorial doubling, ***ogous to the meaning in the writing or the topography of the poem), Mallarme's concept of his work was that of an album of abstract imagery in which various tempi succeeded one another and linked together like in a musical score, It is not surprising that the composer, Claude Ballif, should have declared himself "fascinated" by this "Mallarmeenne" music that "uses our techniques: recurrence, backtracking, augmentation, syllables carried over to the next line, parentheses, appositions, anticipations, etc.". Resolved on setting the poem to music, he quite naturally sub-titled his composition a "musical countersubject". This does not refer to the "countersubject" of a fugue (which is of necessity linear since it is the answer to a melodic subject), but designates, in relation to the whole poem considered as a given musical subject, "another facet of the ...

  • Henry Purcell (1659-1695) - "Seek not to know" Henry Purcell (1659-1695) - "Seek not to know" (God of dreams, The Indian Queen, 1695). The God of dreams ("The Indian Queen" Z630) is an allegorical and ethereal character. He incarnates the mystery, power and knowledge that humans cannot preserve. At the same time, he does not say much, he does not speak clearly, it is almost like an imaginary being within the same imaginary story. I believe it is a personification of destiny, of good or bad fortune; it is the representation of what we will never know and that we indefatigably seek to know. This brief aria somehow establishes a significant link with Purcell's masterpiece ("Dido & Aeneas") and, at the same time, serves as a prelude to the Cantata "La mort de Didon" by MP de Montéclair (1667-1737). Aura Gutierrez, Gesang Bachelorkonzert vom 09.11.2010 in der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
  • Spaff & Lund: Shakespearean Pie Lyrics: A long, long time ago I can still remember How, alas, poor Yorick's jokes drew groans He'd dance and sing and kiss my hand Like Elsinore was Neverland But then he went and joined the Skull and Bones And now, Horatio, I get shivers With every line the ghost delivers All the Globe has been dark 'Cause something rots in Denmark I can't recall a thing as weird As when dear old Daddy reappeared To say that he'd been poison-eared The day King Hamlet died So: To be or to choose not to be? That's the question I'm digestin' in my soliloquy And when fortune aims its slings and arrows at me Tell me how I'm gonna live through Act III? Answer, please, iambically Did you like Shakespeare in Love? And did you rewind for scansion of Gwyneth with her wardrobe gone? Now, do you believe in English Lit? Is brevity the soul of wit? If so, then why's this bloody play so long? Well, I know this role has real cachet For each Branagh and Olivier Mel Gibson draws blood nice Man, I dig that Passion of Christ! I was a young, great Dane in British schools With my pet Ophelia and a dad who rules But I knew we'd been played for fools The day King Hamlet died So here's the question: To be or choose rather to be Suicidal or to idle apathetically, Or is volition all it's cracked up to be If "to die, to sleep, to dream" is lovely? (Please explain the question to me) Less than two months since the obit ran And Lord knows, frailty, thy name's wo-man: My dumbass uncle wears Dad's ring So I set the ...

Throught the shadows of the hood, you try to fly the memories, which indefatigably nights and days, come haunting your mind. And however you see me again, still and always... Kneeded in the desolation, The face sadded, By the last blooming, Of the bloody rose... This rose, I couldn't steal to the loneliness, I press it in my hands, Under the mysterious statues' look to the dead eyes without emotions, And in spite of all your exertions in this world quiet and cold, You don't reach to catch your tears and this last kiss on my cold lips, You know yet that you're only kissing the Death... Our sobs intermix themselves in the night immensity, Where i withdraw myself for ever in the loneliness, Letting the winds of despair, Caress your gentle face...
