Smiling as I thanked her, I was about to take a seat when Milo pulled out the chair. "Thank you." I replied with a small smile. He was still the same person, a true gentleman. "Anytime." He took the seat across from me, his eyes never leaving mine. "How's life, tell me how's your family? I haven't seen them in a while." "Hows everything? The family? • The Men They Couldn`t Hang -The Colours(1797 version) Discontent among sailors at the Nore, a Royal Navy anchorage in the Thames Estuary, overflowed in riotous mutiny in May 1797. The sailors, led by Richard Parker, a former officer who had been voted president of the fleet by the mutineers, wanted an end to impressment, unequal pay, poor quality rations, and better leave entitlements. They also wanted to remove cruel or unpopular officers from ships and have them banned from serving on them again. Worst of all - at least in the authorities' eyes - the fleet blockaded London and stopped trade in and out of the port. Despite a reasonable start the mutiny was hijacked by radical delegates to the unofficial Fleet Parliament whose intransigence and bid for a mini social revolution hardened the stance of the Government and Lords of the Admiralty. Cut off from food and racked by internal dissent, the mutiny eventually dissolved with ships slipping their cables and deserting the cause. Parker, along with many leading co-conspirators, faced swift justice from the vengeful Admiralty and after a brief trial was hanged for treason and piracy. Several other leading mutineers also swung from the yardarm, while other key offenders were either jailed or flogged.

  • "The War Lands" My next writing project. An alternate reality type earth, no magic, and with lots of war. I am just curious if other people can swallow the idea of the Dains. (Name subject to change.) The Dains will be a strong force that can conquer a lot of land. How they will do that is up in the air. I have an initial concept that the Dains develop better agriculture and health, and so have a population surge. With this surge, they roam around conquering land. Prisoners are giving the options: Slavery, death, or impressment into military service. Military service creates these "hoards" where a large portion is made up of these poorly equipped troops who are "pushed" into the fight. Massive casualties, but it always overwhelms the enemy. Otherwise, I'll choose Alexander the Great's phalanx tactic. "The War Lands" will have a lot of combat with different tactics and strategies used. "The Book of War" will be an idea in there as well. Later stories will involve a "legion" that is formed up of unemployed craftsman. It will be an heavy infantry group that moves around to battle these roaming hoards. An interesting concept I fixated on was the idea of the barbers of this legion. Guys who are expert dagger men. The legion would have a large wagon train that would keep growing as camp followers and families develop. The wagons would also be easy to take apart and use for fortifications of the wall. As the legion enters a dryer climate, a scene where a commander issues the order: "Because of the dryer climate, we ...
  • USA National Anthem sung by Patti Austin Heather and Maria This is a project we did for social studies. It is an interpretation of the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner. The War of 1812 was a battle between the Americans and the British because America stopped trade with Britain and France. Both Britain and France relied on trade with America so they were greatly effected by this Non-Intercourse Act. The British were taking American sailors; this was called Impressment. The Battle of Fort McHenry took place on September 13-14, 1814 in Baltimore, Maryland. The British were bombarding the Americans with cannon balls. Francis Scott Key, an amateur poet, wrote the Star Spangled Banner when he was on a boat near the fort to negotiate the release of prisoners. The Star Spangled Banner was originally a popular British drinking song, named "The Anacreontic Song". The Star Spangled Banner was published as the national anthem in 1931.

  • Liberian Refugees Face Post-Civil War Dilemma Last year we brought you news of the end of one of the world's most brutal civil wars, in the country of Liberia. Now, let's take a look at how that war's end has created new difficulties for its refugees. For that, here's Ryan Mitchell in New York. Ask most Americans, even those seven generations too young to have been there, what civil war means to them and youll get some pretty thoughtful answers. The Civil War is pretty important for me because my grandfather was in the Civil War, and he passed away. He had shrapnel in his heart, and my father was telling me about that. I think civil war can be very reassuring to a nation because the people need to be united. But for one group of immigrants to this country civil war was what they were fleeing in coming here. And now that wars end has left them with a real dilemma, being played out a ferry ride away from Manhattan. This is the Staten Island neighborhood that has been called Little Liberia. Its said to be home to the largest Liberian community outside of that country. Now many residents are facing possible deportation at the end of this month as their refugee status in the US expires. Liberians coming to US neighborhoods like this one have mostly been refugees of a longstanding, bloody civil conflict between warring ethnic and political groups. Todays problem boils down to their official immigration status here. (Torli Krua, Advocacy Chair, Friends of Liberia): It was granted to them by President Bush by executive order ...

  • Whitney Houston Sings National Anthem Jeffrey Wang Our Social Studies class was learning about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was a war that the US had with Britain because England was "impressing" American sailors on the high seas when England was in war with France. France nor England wanted the US to trade with the opposing side. In other words, the British were just taking American sailors on merchant ships and forcing them to help in the war with France. At first, the US listened and passed the Non-Intercourse Act which prevented the US from trading with other countries. Places that relied on trade like New York and Connecticut were furious at the act because they couldn't trade and make money. Because of this, the US passed a new act called the Embargo Act that said the US could trade to anyone but France and Britain. Sailors were still The US became angry because they couldn't trade. James Madison declared war because of the inability to trade and because of impressment. In the War of 1812, during the battle of Fort McHenry in 1814, the British bombed. Fort McHenry is a fort in Baltimore, Maryland famous for it's role in the War of 1812. It was built strategically to defend against attacks and to counter naval attacks because it was built on a peninsula. Prior to the Battle of Fort McHenry, the British had just burned down Washington DC during a huge victory. The US knew that they couldn't let another huge city fall, like Baltimore.
