Spanish immigrants to Hawaii and California In the early 1900s, thousands of Spaniards left their homeland in search of a better life. Some went to Argentina, others to Brazil, and even other, to Hawaii. Our story is about those who signed labor contracts to work in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations of Hawaii. And those laborers, in turn, became immigrants and United States citizens who later settled permanently in California. We see these events mostly through the eyes of one of the actual immigrants, Francisco Perez, who was 98 years old when we filmed him. In this trailer, we get short but telling glimpses of the marvelous memories he shared with us, but these are enough to fire the imagination and help us understand the momentous events of his life, and the hardships he and the other immigrants had to overcome. Shocking Video Shows Mexican Immigrant Beaten to Death By US Border Patrol Agents. 2 of 2 - A new PBS documentary exposes the tasing and beating death of a Mexican immigrant by US border agents in California, and has renewed scrutiny of what critics call a culture of impunity. In May 2010, 32-year-old Anastasio Hernández Rojas was caught trying to enter the United States from Mexico near San Diego. He had previously lived in the United States for 25 years and was the father of five US-born children. But instead of deportation, Hernández Rojas' detention ended in his death. A number of border officers were seen beating him, before one tasered him at least five times. During the incident, he was handcuffed and hogtied. He died shortly afterward. The agents say they confronted Hernández Rojas because he became hostile and resisted arrest. But previously undisclosed videos recorded by eyewitnesses on their cell phones show a different story. The footage was obtained by reporter John Carlos Frey and aired in a national television special last Friday night, as part of a joint investigation by the PBS broadcast ,"Need to Know," and the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute. LA protesters demand full rights for immigrants A demonstration is being held in downtown Los Angeles to call for changes in how the federal government is handling immigration. These angry protesters say they're tired of being targeted by federal authorities and seeing families being torn apart. Protesters are demanding an end to the rampant deportations going on in America. They say more than 1.5 million people have been deported in America over the past 3 years, creating a human crisis that they say needs to be stopped immediately. Immigrant rights' groups say they support the delayed deportation act that gives work permits to eligible immigrant youth. But they say the act doesn't go far enough in providing the full immigration reform promised by US President Barack Obama. Protesters say anti-immigrant laws in Alabama and Arizona have already survived challenges in the court system. They say people need to realize that the current political system is not working for them. The rally is part of a nationwide effort to challenge laws and policies targeting undocumented immigrants. Laws like the one in the US state of Alabama, which allows police to check immigration documents for people they stop. Activists say rallies like these show how dedicated immigrants are to staying in this country. Immigrant Protestors Arrested at the DNC, Feat. Rosario Dawson CHARLOTTE, NC-- Ten undocumented protesters were arrested outside the Time Warner Cable convention center, September 4, 2012, where the Democratic National Convention is being held. The protest was put on by an organization called, Undocumented and Unafraid, and featured a bus tour from Phoenix, AR, to Charlotte, NC. Protesters were surrounded by police in pouring rain as supporters and reporters looked on. The event never turned violent and the ten arrested protesters were taken away in vans. The event was meant to bring more attention to deportations by the Obama administration over the last four years. The President has deported 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in his first term, 1.5 times faster than his predecessor, President George W. Bush. The current president recently enacted a deferred action program for young undocumented immigrants to avoid deportation. "He has deported more people and yet at the same time [President Obama] is doing deferred action for dreamers, so there is always a mixed pot that we get," said actress Rosario Dawson, who attended the protest.
