  • Sein oder...?...! (To be or...?...!) part 3 I created this experimental video in 2004. Its dedicated to all those who have preserved their inner sensitivity and ability to listen in these times of cold-heartedness and hectic pace. Its produced in the form of an allegory dealing with different human conditions and is embedded in a dream sequence (the way I present the dreamer is to make clear how vulnerable and unprotected she is). The film has 4 phases (but is normally not divided into 4 videos. This has technical reasons): Phase 1: The war scenes in this video are symbolic for human conflicts and hatred. Phase 2: Captivity or imprisonment stands for isolation and loneliness. Phase 3: The love scenes show the desire to find peace and comfort in a relationship. Phase 4: This part deals with different religions and the search for something meaningful beyond our materialistic and rational realm (and we dont want to keep quiet about religious wars however they appear!). At the end of the dream the protagonist surrenders and jumps Everything else I leave up to your own imaginativeness and interpretation.
  • MOVIngE(?) Laureate of the 2008-2009 LVMH Prize for young, creative artist. Homage - to Picasso. According to the author`s indications, the work awarded the LVMH Prize for young creative artists is presented as follows : " My work is a story about the bottom of depth of thoughts. This, at times, insane seeming reality is a glimpse at life trough my eyes. This describes the creative process, moving trought time, space and materials. All of the materials used hold a deep personal meaning for me. There is a little unfounded randomness in this. This is a simple story about opportunities available today to present one´s thoughts as a visual experience. At the same time, it searches for parallels with Picasso and the hinterland of my embryonic thoughts. In composing all of this, I wondered what Picasso would see in this work. What would Picasso have done if he had a computer and the requisite video processing programs? At the same time, this work controls the viewr`s capacity for imaginativeness and observation. The purpose of this work was to show respect for Picasso - for expending my world of thinking." The work was exhibited in Gallery of the Le Pont Neuf Association 31, rue du Pont Neuf - 75001 Paris on 9 October- 20 November 2009.
  • Safe Trestles Access to Trestles, one of North Americas most celebrated waves, is under threat due to safety and environmental concerns. Currently, over 100000 people each year follow informal trails through wetlands and over active train tracks to gain access to the surf breaks at Trestles. These impromptu manmade paths present a safety hazard with passing trains and threaten the fragile ecosystem of Trestles. In response, a coalition of concerned groups organized by the volunteer non-profit organization Architecture for Humanity, are launching Safe Trestles, an open-to-all, two-stage design competition to create a safe pathway to serve surfers, the local coastal community and day visitors to San Onofre State Beach. This coalition is looking for cohesive designs that eliminate the danger of crossing active train tracks, help to restore wetlands that have been damaged by the present path, preserve and improve vistas, and offer education about the history of the site and the beach marsh environment. The new path should ensure continued access to the resources by all members of our community and adhere to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. While placing no limitations on the originality or imaginativeness of design ideas, we are looking for tangible low-impact solutions that can actually be built at a future date. Ideally, the winning entry will be sensitive to the remote and undisturbed nature of the area—providing safe access without compromising the pristine environment ...

  • Turn Baby Turn Sometimes it makes sense to take a new position in your own four walls, lay down on the ground and watch the world from down there. Because a change of perspectives provides your own image world more density. It's also quite cool to pick up elements from foreign or even adversary worlds like for example dirndls. Han Bennink - drums. " "We all know how 20th century composers from Messiaen to Ellington to Dolphy cribbed melodies" from birds, says Kevin Whitehead in the liner notes to this collection of four*** bird songs by the celebrated Clusone 3: Michael Moore (alto sax, clarinet, melodica), Ernst Reijseger (cello), and Han Bennink (drums). None of those three are represented on this broadly-ranging program, but it does include tunes by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Hoagy Carmichael alongside Peruvian folk music, Saint-Saens "Le Cygne," and duck calls by Steve Lacy and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Plus "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along," "Tico-Tico No Fuba," and more. As fascinating as the choice of melodies is the trio's approach to performing them. Every track, even the hoariest old chestnut, is given a fresh coat of paint, as all three musicians consciously incorporate birdlike melodies - and rhythms - into their interpretations. This is done conspicuously on tracks like Moore's original "Avocet," which is built upon twitters and flutters from both Moore and Reijseger. Lacy's "Duck" is also an exercise in melodic onomatopoeia. But it also crops up here and there on other tracks throughout the disc, as conventional swing rhythms rub elbows with rubato chirrups and peeps, breaking into, commenting upon, and augmenting the overall thrust of the tunes ...
  • Container Scope Oceanscope A place in the sun Ports all around the globe have something magical about them; they are passages to the world. While only one hundred years ago it was sailing ships that offloaded precious goods such as silk, pepper and cacao, today harbours are pivots of international trade, with goods being shipped in uniform-sized containers. The design of the Container Scope uses these containers and their symbolism for an architectonically interesting approach that relates them to human beings and the environment. The concept behind this is inspirational and visionary, as it expresses a clear assimilation of the reality in the port city of Incheon in South Korea. In order to lend the many unused containers in its port an architectural significance that the public too benefits from, these containers underwent "recycling", so to speak: they establish observatory platforms by being stacked on top of one another to form geometrical constructions. Since these containers are located next to the historic "sunset place" of Incheon city, the concept centred above all on the view and the possibility to watch the sunset in the port. The arrangement of the containers followed the limitations of the building site, since the ground level was too low to allow a direct view of the sunset, the containers' structures were set at various angles. Visitors are lead via the various staircases and rails upwards to higher positions, each with diverse viewpoints to watch the sun set in their city -- in a ...

No. 100 182 PAL The first adaptation of Georges Bizet's music into a full-length ballet (the score's many Spanish dance rhythms made it ideal to dance to) was brought to the stage for the first time by Roland Petit and his Les Ballets de Paris in 1949. Alongside the practice of arranging original extracts from the opera and the orchestral suites composed by Bizet himself into ballet music, the version written by Rodion Schtschedrin on the basis of the original score became especially popular. Mats Ek also used Rodion Schtschedrin's Carmen Suite as the basis for his choreography. With decor and costumes by Marie-Louise Ekman and lighting design by Goran Westrup, he created his new perspective which shifted attention more towards Don Jose and the difficult decision the officer has to make between his mother and the world... • 6. From Classical to Neoclassical Utilitarianism Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) In this economics-oriented lecture, Professor Shapiro introduces neoclassical utilitarianism as it was formulated by economist Vilfredo Pareto and further described by Francis Edgeworth, examining such concepts as indifference curves, transitivity, the Pareto principle, and the Edgeworth box diagram. It is revealed that the main departure of neoclassical utilitarianism from classical utilitarianism was that it did away with Bentham's troublesome interpersonal comparisons of utility. However, Professor Shapiro explains that, if classical utilitarians didn't take the differences between individuals seriously enough, neoclassical utilitarians take these differences hyper-seriously. If classical utilitarianism can be interpreted as a radically redistributive doctrine, neoclassical utilitarianism becomes the exact opposite; that is, a doctrine that is quite friendly to the status quo. • Velux sun tunnel by Lovegrove Funnelling natural light The sun plays a key role in many creation myths, in which the sun is often personified and represented as a God-like figure. In Chinese legends, for instance, we find the story of the sun god Shen Yi. When the earth was scorched by the heat of ten suns, he shot down nine with a bow and arrow to save the world. In Greek-Roman mythology we have Apollo who is the god of light and possesses the gift of prophesy. A fascinating interpretation of what the sun can also signify is presented by the design of the Sun Tunnel. Designed according to the head note "If this is a lamp, the sun is the bulb", this lamp takes sunlight and using an innovative approach turns it into a light source for indoor spaces. The working principle is simple and highly effective: a long tube-like tunnel brings natural daylight from the roof of a building to the ceiling of otherwise electrically lit rooms. The formal mediator for the light being directed from the outside comes in the shape of a fascinatingly organic-looking lamp body. This body functions as an additional diffuser that both enhances the natural light and spreads it in dynamic light reflections across the room. Just like almost any electric lamp, the natural light of this lamp can be directed and adjusted according to user's needs. The Sun Tunnel embodies an impressive lighting concept that not only makes use of a natural resource, but also offers a new approach to the experience of sunlight; for its designer, Ross ...

To go beyond what we have. The limits. Exceed them. Find out anything that surprises us that confronts us. To bring us face to face with comfort. At all costs, we spit out endless amounts of things, which hinder our mind. I have just been hindered. Some new questions that are new riddles, how curious. • Adelina Patti, "Connais-tu le pays?", Thomas: Mignon (recorded in 1906) The great Adelina Patti (1843-1919), who gave her name to an era in the history of opera performing, here in Mignon's romanza, "Connais-tu le pays?" from Thomas' Mignon. The recording was made for G&T in June 1906. In his book "The Grand Tradition", John Steane singled out her recording of "Ah, non credea Mirarti" from Bellini's La Sonnambula and this recording (both made in the same month) for special mention. He commented that Patti's word coloring and wistful tenderness present "a genuine imaginativeness and involvement" and provide "a lesson in the valuable art of moulding a verse." It must be said that by the time of the advent of recording technology, Patti was already at the tail-end of an eventful career of more than 40 years and allowances have to be made where her vocal state is concerned. But what remains - her marvelous ability to bring imaginative and memorable touches to the music in hand through masterly phrasing and word-pointing - still inspires admiration.
