Galveston (With Lyrics) Galveston Jimmy Webb Jimmy Webb is an idiosyncratic American popular music composer, singer and pianist. While his approach to composing is traditional and orchestral, he wrote for the rock/pop age. Webb's most popular songs were all composed when he was between 19 and 21 years of age during the Vietnam War. In 1969 he wrote "Galveston", a song about an American soldier who pined for his hometown and his girlfriend. I have always thought of it as an Anti-War song. Glen Campbell popularized the song with an almost marching military beat that I dislike. Jimmy Webb recently performed it himself, in the way he intended it, slow and reflective. I've added some images that the song creates for me. The statue in the video is a memorial to the estimated 10000 people lost in the hurricane of 1900 that swept through the beaches of Galveston. The devastating hurricane still holds the record as the United States' deadliest natural disaster. In this lecture Branko Milanovic, the lead economist at the World Bank's research division, will approach the issue in a new and innovative way, focusing on inequality in income and wealth in different time periods and contexts: from inequality in Roman times (and how it compared with inequality today), to depictions of wealth inequality in literature (Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina), to inequality across generations of a single family (the three generations of Obamas illustrating this theme). As for global inequality today, the talk will examine its main cause (differences in average incomes between countries), the role China and India might play, and, perhaps most importantly, whether global inequality matters at all, and if does, what can we do to reduce it. Branko Milanovic is one of the world's leading experts on inequality. For clearing Hard Mode level 1 cap, you unlock level 255 cap for all modes. If it's your first time clearing Hard mode for that file, then you'll get the Queen of Hearts on your file as well.

SWEET GEORGIA BROWN: The 1925 song "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a jazz standard and pop tune known to many as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. "Sweet Georgia Brown" was written by Maceo Pinkard (music) and Kenneth Casey (words). The tune was first recorded by bandleader Ben Bernie and his Orchestra. As Bernie's then nationally famous orchestra featuring the number did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit to the song. UMC'S one to grow on one of my favorite songs back in the day. On their debut album, Fruits of Nature, the UMC's -- Hass G and Kool Kim -- are endlessly imaginative, witty, and effervescent by disposition and lyrical flow, and always intelligent. When it came to the music, co-producers Hass G and RNS decked it out in vintage soul and old Blue Note-styled tracks, with reams of obscure, idiosyncratic vocal samples tossed in as hooks, breaks, and bridges. The resulting effort is yet another vastly underrated rap album out of those banner years in hip-hop, 1991 and 1992, when commercial and economic instincts had yet to turn the music formulaic. The ironic thing is that nearly everything on Fruits of Nature is sing-along catchy and so ebullient that it would have sounded great bounding out of radios or from MTV. Unfortunately, it is also the sort of hip-hop that is too idiosyncratic and brainy to garner a widespread audience. Instead of alchemizing their jazz-tinged sensibility into a more earnest and reverent underground hip-hop extension of the jazz tradition, UMC's twist their jazzy inclinations into what are essentially pop songs that, even while generating a singular style all their own, cover the full range of the catchiness spectrum: ingratiating melodic tunes ("One to Grow On"), carbonated word play ("Blue Cheese"), cleverly disguised boasts and straight rhyming ("Kraftworks," "Swing It to the Area," "Any Way the Wind Blows"), loping urban anthems ("You Got My Back," "Jive Talk"), and ...

Neil Young: David Geffen impersonates Art Colony Dictator - 1986 Neil Young has long been known for being idiosyncratic. Part of his appeal lies in his unpredictability — each album stylistically different yet somehow remaining quintessentially "Neal." But in 1984, after Young was tempted away from his longtime label, Reprise Records, and signed to David Geffen's Geffen label, he suddenly found himself caught up in a legal entanglement. After releasing a string of idiosyncratic albums that failed to be big sellers for his new label, David Geffen took Neil to court, suing him for intentionally making "uncharacteristic and uncommercial" music. During his time at Geffen, Young released an electronic-tinged record with Trans, a rockabilly album on Everybody's Rocking, and a country album with Old Ways. To be fair, these albums do suck (except for Trans, that one is actually pretty good) but it's still ridiculous to sue Neil Young for not making "Neil Young music" because by definition anything that Neil Young releases is "Neil Young music." The lawsuit was eventually dropped, and Young returned to Reprise in 1988.
