La Zona - Rain La Zona A zone, an area characterized by demarcation. Neatly defined by outlined borders. Well, that is precisely what is avoided by La Zona. In and around this zone all boundries fade and listeners are swept away into a swirling meltingpot of Soul, Rock, Indie, Alternative, Jazz, Fusion and more. An idiosyncratic sound, first completely recognizable and then extremely alienated again. Barend van der Pol (guitar), Sander Roerdink (drums), Remco Hoonte (keyboards), Jeff Debies (vocals) and Ronnie van Silfhout (bass) take you on a trip through a zone in which beaten paths are avoided and where adventure is chosen. In early August 2009 La Zona presented their demo, with the appropriate title "Viva La Zona". Four songs reflect to what this idiosyncratic band is capable of! Galveston (With Lyrics) Galveston Jimmy Webb Jimmy Webb is an idiosyncratic American popular music composer, singer and pianist. While his approach to composing is traditional and orchestral, he wrote for the rock/pop age. Webb's most popular songs were all composed when he was between 19 and 21 years of age during the Vietnam War. In 1969 he wrote "Galveston", a song about an American soldier who pined for his hometown and his girlfriend. I have always thought of it as an Anti-War song. Glen Campbell popularized the song with an almost marching military beat that I dislike. Jimmy Webb recently performed it himself, in the way he intended it, slow and reflective. I've added some images that the song creates for me. The statue in the video is a memorial to the estimated 10000 people lost in the hurricane of 1900 that swept through the beaches of Galveston. The devastating hurricane still holds the record as the United States' deadliest natural disaster. Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin' I still see her dark eyes glowin' She was 21 when I left Galveston Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing While I watch the cannons flashing I clean my gun and dream of Galveston I still see her standing by the water Standing there lookin' out to sea And is she waiting there for me? On the beach where we used to run Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying Before I dry the tears she's crying Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun At Galveston, at ...

The Haves and Have Nots Speaker: Branko Milanovic Chair: Professor Danny Quah This event was recorded on 8 February 2011 in Old Theatre, Old Building Inequality is a surprisingly slippery issue, involving not just straightforward comparisons of individuals, but also comparisons of price and consumption differences around the world -- and over time. In this lecture Branko Milanovic, the lead economist at the World Bank's research division, will approach the issue in a new and innovative way, focusing on inequality in income and wealth in different time periods and contexts: from inequality in Roman times (and how it compared with inequality today), to depictions of wealth inequality in literature (Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina), to inequality across generations of a single family (the three generations of Obamas illustrating this theme). As for global inequality today, the talk will examine its main cause (differences in average incomes between countries), the role China and India might play, and, perhaps most importantly, whether global inequality matters at all, and if does, what can we do to reduce it. Branko Milanovic is one of the world's leading experts on inequality. He is lead economist at the World Bank's research division in Washington DC, a visiting fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and the author of The Haves and Have Nots: A Brief and Idiosyncratic History of Global Inequality.

Busta Rhymes - Everybody Rise The most idiosyncratic personality in rap and possessor of its most recognizable delivery, a halting, ragga-inspired style with incredible complexity, inventiveness, and humor, Busta Rhymes formed Leaders of the New School in 1990 and released two albums with the group before breaking out with a 1996 solo hit single, "Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check." Born in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, in 1972 of Jamaican heritage (a definite influence on his rapping style), Busta moved to Long Island in 1983 and, at Uniondale High School, met up with MCs Charlie Brown, Dinco D., and Cut Monitor Milo. Inspired by fellow Long Islanders Public Enemy and Eric B. & Rakim, the foursome united as Leaders of the New School and signed a deal with Elektra Records right out of the gate, when Busta was only 17 years old. Much respected in the hip-hop underground for their Afrocentric philosophy and tough rapping styles, Leaders of the New School debuted in 1991 with Future Without a Past... but released only one more album, 1993's TIME, before breaking up the following year. Out on his own for the first time, Busta called on some friends, appearing on A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario," the incredible remix of Craig Mack's "Flava in Ya Ear" (also featuring Notorious BIG and LL Cool J), as well as other projects with Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, and TLC. He also appeared in the 1995 John Singleton film Higher Learning and earned a solo contract with Elektra. Busta's first album, The Coming, proved a ...

Jerry Lee Lewis - Sweet Georgia Brown Live in London, in 1983. SWEET GEORGIA BROWN: The 1925 song "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a jazz standard and pop tune known to many as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. "Sweet Georgia Brown" was written by Maceo Pinkard (music) and Kenneth Casey (words). The tune was first recorded by bandleader Ben Bernie and his Orchestra. As Bernie's then nationally famous orchestra featuring the number did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit to the song. Several artists have recorded versions of this songs. Ethel Waters recorded it in the 1920s, the California Ramblers in 1925 and Django Reinhardt in the 1930s did an instrumental version, The Beatles in 1961 working as back-up band for singer Tony Sheridan, the bands Gentle Giant and Count Basie in 1977, etc. Jerry Lee Lewis recorded it in the mid 1970s, in the album There Must Be More To Love Than This.

UMC'S one to grow on one of my favorite songs back in the day. On their debut album, Fruits of Nature, the UMC's -- Hass G and Kool Kim -- are endlessly imaginative, witty, and effervescent by disposition and lyrical flow, and always intelligent. When it came to the music, co-producers Hass G and RNS decked it out in vintage soul and old Blue Note-styled tracks, with reams of obscure, idiosyncratic vocal samples tossed in as hooks, breaks, and bridges. The resulting effort is yet another vastly underrated rap album out of those banner years in hip-hop, 1991 and 1992, when commercial and economic instincts had yet to turn the music formulaic. The ironic thing is that nearly everything on Fruits of Nature is sing-along catchy and so ebullient that it would have sounded great bounding out of radios or from MTV. Unfortunately, it is also the sort of hip-hop that is too idiosyncratic and brainy to garner a widespread audience. Instead of alchemizing their jazz-tinged sensibility into a more earnest and reverent underground hip-hop extension of the jazz tradition, UMC's twist their jazzy inclinations into what are essentially pop songs that, even while generating a singular style all their own, cover the full range of the catchiness spectrum: ingratiating melodic tunes ("One to Grow On"), carbonated word play ("Blue Cheese"), cleverly disguised boasts and straight rhyming ("Kraftworks," "Swing It to the Area," "Any Way the Wind Blows"), loping urban anthems ("You Got My Back," "Jive Talk"), and ...

Neil Young: David Geffen impersonates Art Colony Dictator - 1986 Neil Young has long been known for being idiosyncratic. Part of his appeal lies in his unpredictability — each album stylistically different yet somehow remaining quintessentially "Neal." But in 1984, after Young was tempted away from his longtime label, Reprise Records, and signed to David Geffen's Geffen label, he suddenly found himself caught up in a legal entanglement. After releasing a string of idiosyncratic albums that failed to be big sellers for his new label, David Geffen took Neil to court, suing him for intentionally making "uncharacteristic and uncommercial" music. During his time at Geffen, Young released an electronic-tinged record with Trans, a rockabilly album on Everybody's Rocking, and a country album with Old Ways. To be fair, these albums do suck (except for Trans, that one is actually pretty good) but it's still ridiculous to sue Neil Young for not making "Neil Young music" because by definition anything that Neil Young releases is "Neil Young music." The lawsuit was eventually dropped, and Young returned to Reprise in 1988. Elliot Roberts on Geffen: David Geffen called Neil and I the day we were going over to sign and asked if we could sit down for 10 minutes and we went over and David changed his offer considerably and elevated it to what was in the same ball park, although considerably lower and showed a lot of love and concern for Neil. Other companies can offer you money-up-the-ass but not many people can offer you love and respectability from ...

Zoviet France - Pearroc (Oestre 1984) Zoviet France is an idiosyncratic collective of anonymous postindustrialists, dronologists, and pseudo-ethnomusicologists. Their investigations have taken them into fictional cultures where nothing is easily located and reality often slips into the hypnagogic. Having secluded themselves in Newcastle, England since their inception in 1980, Zoviet France have developed a radical relationship with the cheap technologies of old-fashioned tape recorders, homemade acoustic instruments, primitive looping and sampling devices, and basic dub trickery. From these machines, the collective has crafted a distinctly unique vocabulary of postindustrial sonic hypnosis. Just as Zoviet France's sound was alchemic reconfigurations of inexpensive technologies, their vinyl packaging literally covered their sounds with aluminum, roofing shingles and porcelain

Sagrada Familia - Barcelona The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (official Catalan name; Spanish: Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia; "Expiatory Church of the Holy Family"), often simply called the Sagrada Família, is a massive, privately-funded Roman Catholic church that has been under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain since... 1882 and is not expected to be complete until at least 2026. A portion of the building's interior is scheduled to open for public worship and tours by September 2010.Considered the master-work of renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (18521926), the project's vast scale and idiosyncratic design have made it one of Barcelona's (and Spain's) top tourist attractions for many years. The church is to be consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on November 7, 2010, during his visit to Santiago de Compostela and Barcelona. (Wikipedia)
Autoclav1.1 - An Idiosyncratic Oath 'Where Once Were Exit Wounds' is a visceral montage of complex beats, surging guitars, pulsating synthwork, and undying melodies, that will well exceed even the most ascertaining tastes, all the while exhibiting a flow of embracing atmospheres and lovely melodic breeziness that will encompass its listener with warmth and gentle adrenaline time and time again. Autoclav1.1 fearlessly interjects a powerful concoction of love, loss, and despair fueled by lathering electronic rhythms akin to a thoughtful drive accelerating almost uncontrollably along a distant country road on a warm summer night.
