Osmosis Lab for Biology We had 3 different solutions in 3 different cups, hypotonic solution, hypertonic solution, and isotonic solution. We then placed 3 different tubes each in a cup, each tube had a hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic solution in it. We placed the hypotonic tube in the hypertonic cup, the hypertonic tube in the hypotonic cup, and isotonic in isotonic. We had to see how much the mass of the bags changed.

Red Blood Cells in Hypotonic Solution Red blood cells are suspended in a 0.85% saline solution. Distilled water is added slowly. Immediately upon addition of distilled water, blood cells blow up entirely, or suffer tears in their cellular membranes, thereby creating perfectly round, empty cells which are free of hemoglobin. We call these "ghost" cells, and they are visible at the end of the video.

(Conc. in the cell is more than Conc. outside cell) Osmosis: Water will flow from solution with lower concentration to solution with higher concentration. Therefore, osmosis makes water to flow from outside into the cell. Unlike plant cells, animal cells don't have cell walls, so they can't tolerate higher internal pressure, and finally burst. Hypotonic plant cells are turgid, which is its healthy state. (The best condition of animal cell is isotonic condition)

Ghost Blood Cells These blood cells are in a hypotonic solution. The membranes around the blood cells got leaky from being stretched out in the hypotonic solution, but didn't blow altogether, and so these are hemoglobin free compartments, or "ghosts".
