  • Cold Seeps and Methane Hydrates Under certain pressure and temperature conditions gas molecules such as methane can crystallize with water molecules to an ice-like structure, so-called methane hydrates. At the MARUM institute in Bremen, scientists are working toward a better understanding of the role of methane hydrates for the deep-sea ecosystems, the global carbon cycle, and the stability of continental slopes. Methane hydrates have received special attention because the energy stored in them may be used by people in the future.

  • *BREAKING* Feds: Several leaks in blow-out preventer -- METHANE HYDRATES Press briefing and teleconference to provide operational update on ongoing Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill response efforts, Adm. Thad Allen, National Incident Commander, August 3, 2010 at 11:00 am EDT: ACTUALLY there are several leaks... one around capping stack itself and there ACTUALLY are some down by the blow-out preventer and some of them are ACTUALLY producing some hydrates... Literally hundreds of thousands of pounds of apparatus sitting on the wellhead... been there for quite a long time, subjected to a lot of different pressures... The quicker we can get this done the quicker we could reduce risk of internal failure that were not aware of right now that could be working right now because we don't know the condition of the inside of the BOP. We don't have any DEFINITIVE information regarding structural integrity issues... couldn't rule it out... that's why moving at best speed is probably indicated.

  • Parking Wally on a Methane Hydrate Hill Watch as researcher Laurenz Thomsen remotely controls Wally the Crawler from his office in Bremen Germany. Laurenz uses his mouse to drive the crawler and clicks on the video window to move the camera. In this video, he positions Wally directly atop a methane hydrate outcrop, in a place where methane readings were at a maximum. Laurenz then inspects some of the exposed hydrates and a curious hole in the bacterial mat. Is it a vent? Wally, the worlds first Internet-operated deep-sea crawler, is equipped with sensors to measure temperature, pressure, water currents, salinity, methane and turbidity. Wally also sports a pan/tilt webcam, affording detailed views of the seafloor sediments and local sea life. Laurenz Thomsen is a professor of Geosciences, Jacobs University Bremen, Germany and an adjunct professor of Biological Oceanography for the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle. The primary focus of his research has been the carbon cycle, with particular interest in organic particle fluxes at continental margins. His publications on continental margins encompass the fields of particle transport, benthic pelagic coupling and CO2 mitigation. He will be using NEPTUNE instruments to study the carbon and methane fluxes around gas-hydrate sites.

The concentration threshold for hydrogen sulfide is about 5 to 10 parts per billion. Last Thursday, the EPA measured levels at 1000 ppb. Ambient air standard for the VOC benzene, for example, is 3.76 ppb, while its standard for methylene chloride is 61.25 ppb. (a set of scuttling charges?) With nearby pipelines I suspect that thought would quickly come to mind. Huge pontoons on Horizom filled with water have enormous inertia even at slow decent speeds. • 'Methane Hydrate Bubbles' rising from the ocean floor solve the 'Devils Triangle' Mystery How Brilliant Computer Scientists Solved the Bermuda Triangle Mystery Terrence Aym Salem- Oceanographic surveyors of the sea floor in the area of the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea region between continental Europe and Great Britain have discovered significant quantities of methane hydrates and older eruption sites. According to two research scientists the mystery of vanished ships and airplanes in the region dubbed "The Bermuda Triangle" has been solved. Step aside outer space aliens, time anomalies, submerged giant Atlantean pyramids and bizarre meteorological phenomena ... the "Triangle" simply suffers from an acute case of gas. Natural gas—the kind that heats ovens and boils water—specifically methane, is the culprit behind the mysterious disappearances and loss of water and air craft. The evidence for this astounding new insight into a mystery that's bedeviled the world is laid out in a research paper published in the American Journal of Physics. Professor Joseph Monaghan researched the hypothesis with honor student David May at the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The two hypothesized that large methane bubbles rising from the ocean floor might account for many, if not all, of the mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft at specific locales around the world. Researcher Ivan T. Sanderson identified these mystery areas during the 1960s. Sanderson described the actual shape of these regions as more like a lozenge rather than a triangle ...

  • BP Oil Spill - Methane Hydrate Never Mentioned - For What it's Worth Buffalo Springfield "Hidden in Plain Sight" is not plain, and what's hidden is unclear. This world is so foreign to us ... I quote: ~~~ Blasts of it have been linked, in respectable journals, to mass extinctions, to undersea landslides that caused ocean-crossing tsunamis, and even to the mysterious disappearance of ships at sea. On the TV monitor aboard the research vessel Sonne, he could see the mud as it was brought to the surface. A few minutes later, on deck, "the whole cubic meter of stuff was bubbling," he says. "It was just one smelly olive green mess of sediment. People were hesitating, standing back, because it was just an awful smell, the hydrogen sulfide. So I rolled up my sleeves and reached in that mess and stood up to my ankles in it, and then touched this hard stuff—it was cold, ice cold. I threw it on the deck to get rid of the sediment, because it was all covered, and it broke open. It was pure white." "You can build up enormous amounts of methane over time," says Gerald Dickens, both in the frozen hydrates and as free gas below them. When that happens, it doesn't take much—a submarine landslide or a slight warming of the bottom water—to release potentially catastrophic burps. The total amount of methane made by these microbes is probably greater than the mass of all known reserves of coal, gas, and oil. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and huge belches of microbial methane from deep reservoirs, where it resides mostly as frozen methane hydrate, have been linked to rapid ...

This video shows the formation of a gas hydrate, and shows that when they are forced through a narrowing, constriction or chope point they can pile up and form a clog this can seal a leak.
