Hobo "Shoestring" at Ashland wye This is where you head north to Sioux City or west to Lincoln or east to Galesburg. Also, the Omaha/Lincoln locals run across at the crossover. The squealing noise you're hearing is actually the steel wheels "shelling" on the rails. The wheels are rolling on the rails at a slightly different angle than straight forward, thus the squealing songs of the train come alive. (The wheels are trying to roll straight on a curved rail).
Hobo "Shoestring" arriving at Lincoln/Ashland split The tracks to the left take you to Lincoln, Nebraska and the track I'm taking takes you to Ashland, Nebraska crew change and on to Sioux City. There are two destinations trains take upon leaving Murray Yard. Either you'll go to Stinkin Lincoln or you'll head to Sioux City, Iowa. All empty coal trains take the track to the left into Lincoln where they get serviced and refueled for their trip out to the coal mines in Wyoming. Freight also goes to Lincoln. I always look for those excess height insulated boxcars, (like the one behind me in this video), on a train at Murray. This way I know these are headed for Sioux City to be loaded with beef at IBP. The only reason I go to Lincoln is if I want to ride out west to Laurel, Montana, then I'll ride into Lincoln where I then catch out west to Alliance, Gillette, Sheridan and on to Laurel. If you listen close, you can hear the grind marks on the tracks. These grind marks are caused by a track filing vehicle that grinds the tops of the rails back to their former shape. It sounds really neat to me!

Hobo camp in Whitefish, Montana - (South side of yard-near east end) This camp was originally occupied by the FTRA in the early 1990's. I've seen many drunken fights as well as many good times at this very camp! Somebody here still is keeping up this camp. I was so glad when I saw this camp was still being used and that it was in good order.

Do hoboes ever hitch hike? (I had to this last day of my trip)! Once I bailed off my train in Hoffman, Minnesota, I cleaned up a bit and caught this ride without even holding up my sign or thumb! This kid took me all the way to Sisseton, South Dakota about 60 miles away to the west where I boarded a bus and came on back home.

Central Islip Hoboes Almost Get the State Motor Pump Record The Central Islip Hoboes almost broke the Motor Pump State Record at the 2010 Suffolk County Drill at Riverhead on July 11th, 2010. The time logged for their run was 5.34 secs. When the Officials checked all of the particulars that need to be tested to make it an official state record, it was discovered that the water time was faster and out of tolerance from the original tested water time. This meant the run could not be considered a state record. The decision was made to re-run the Motor Pump Contest. Central Islip took 1st place with a 2nd run time of 5.85 secs.

Hobo Living Continued: Freight Train Hopping In New York Go to If you've found this video through searching YouTube the chances are you've already seen my first one, Hobo Living (if not then go check it out). Anyway, until now the only video available from my freight hopping trip in New York state in July 2005 was Hobo Living. My temporary hobo camp near the "KCS" yards in Shreveport as I wait on my Jackson, Mississippi train I say here until my Jackson, Mississippi KCS train was being built up. A car knocker drove by me and brought my a 12-pack of ice cold bottled waters as well as taking my cell phone to the yard office to have it fully charged for me. It only took my five hours to make it from Shreveport, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi on a hot-shot junker via Monro, Louisiana and Vicksburg, Mississippi! (This very route was once ran by "Mid-South" Railroad before KCS bought it out in the 1990's and upgraded the crappy lines). Once in Jackson, I took the "CN" south as far as Fluker, Louisiana where I bailed off and called my brother to come fetch me and bring me to his house only 30 miles from Fluker. This "CN" line from Chicago to NOLA was once owned and ran by "IC&G" Railroad....the line I eventually caught in Jackson, that is.
