Heifer International & Bacon Is My Enemy Several weeks ago I was sifting through my email and out of curiousity I decided to look in my "spam" mail box - I NEVER do this. My eyes were drawn to a email with the subject line: "POVERTY IN AFRICA, please read!" At first I thought it was one of those money scams, but decided to read it anyway. It turns out that the email was written by a middle schooler named Quinn. She and her classmates Kelsey & Hazel were doing a social action project focused on Heifer International. She was asking me to help she and her classmates spread the word about this organization. Instead of deleting the email or responding with quick reply, my daughter Paige and I took it one step further. We decided to say "yes" to helping these three girls with their project and ended up taking a road trip to Bellingham, WA to see them in person. This is what they had to say.

South Texas State Fair - 2009 - English Breeding Heifer Show A British White heifer, JWest's Mazey, sire El Presidente, age 12 months, is shown at the South Texas State Fair in 2009, by Taylor West, and this is Taylor's and Mazey's fist experience in the show ring. Coverage of all the heifers in this category is included. This is the first year the YMBL sponsored fair has been held in the spring rather than in October, and it seems to have had some impact on the number of entries in the livestock shows. Mazey is a small framed very feminine British White heifer, and is representative of about the smallest frame you would generally find in a British White. Many herds of British White cattle are comparable in size to Hereford and Angus. The British White breed is a great choice for first time showers, and the very young show students, as their gentle disposition is incomparable to any other breed.

Doctoring Yearlings Heifer Cows in VA Virginia Beef Corporation's Charlie Gore and his young helper Justin Price, check heifers in harvested corn fields on a November morning in 2001 between Delaplane and Marshall Virginia. Virginia Beef rents farmland in Northern Virginia and at this time managed nearly 40000 acres making it one of the biggest cattle operations on the east coast. To stock all this land with cattle, Virginia Beef was buying thousands of yearling feeder calf heifers. These young females were shipped by truck to Delaplane, Virginia and some of the cattle got sick with "shipping fever". The men use western techniques, riding out and observing the cattle, and roping the sick heifers to give antibiotics. These techniques require great physical skill, and are seldom used in other Virginia cattle operations where typically the cattle would be herded into a pen or paddock and the sick ones sorted out and doctored in a cattle chute.

Tucker Link, owner of Kiamichi Link Ranch of Antlers, Okla., bid $75000 on Jan. 14, 2010, to purchase the 2010 Angus Foundation Heifer Package, donated by Jeff Ward and Duncan Smith owners of Sinclair Cattle Company, of Warfordsburg, Pennslyvania. More than $1.4 million has been raised from this Angus Foundation fundraising activity since its inception in 1980. Sinclair K Bty 8R102 E118 was chosen to represent the Sinclair program and is a daughter of the famed RR Rito 707. Added to this years package was the pick of the 2010 Sinclair Cattle Company natural born heifer crop.

Heifer Vietnam Team's POG On April 11, in response to the POG campaign launched all over the world, Heifer Vietnam team had a meaningful time working to make the thatch roof for the house of Ms. Thach Thi Uol and Mr. Huynh Van Tho. The Khmer couple has joined Heifer project for more than 1 year in Trung Ngai village, Vinh Long province. The family is in a heart-breaking situation. Ms. Uol, aged 49, has suffered heart problem for a year and she couldnt afford social insurance which can significantly reduce the cost of treatment. Her husband became the main labor, shouldering all the heavy work such as farming and cutting grass for the cows. The whole family lives in a 25m2 thatch-roof house which had been decaying for 4 years. Their two youngest children often go to school with empty stomach as the family has nothing to eat. Still, Ms. Uols children do not give up to difficulties. Trinh, the second daughter, did finish high school. Although she desired to pursue higher education, the 20 year old girl is now working in a far-away province to share the financial burden with her parents. Moved by the situation, Ms. Dung, Head of Vinh Long Veterinary Department and also the Project Manager, has decided to help Trinh find a job and register for a college course so that she will be able to stay close to home and continue her education. Ms. Uols eyes filled with joy upon hearing the news. Together with Heifer staff, other SHG members also took part in helping Ms. Uols family. The joy to help the poor ...

Dan Zanes - Holiday Time In Brooklyn When our friends at heifer () asked if I would do a holiday video, little did i know that a llama, a goat and a cow would visit my street in brooklyn. I invited a bunch of high energy neighbors to join me for a crazy afternoon video shoot of laughing, strumming guitars, playing flutes, trumpets, saxophones, banging on drums, and dancing madly, all for the sake of helping heifer international continue to raise money to combat world hunger.
