How to Build a Clothes Hamper, Part 2: Lath Construction In Part 2 of this video series, the Lowe's Shop Class host, Keith Flippen, demonstrates how to build the front and end lath assemblies for a wooden clothes hamper. Keith shows how to create the front lath, which you can then repeat for the ends just with different measurements. First, measure your openings, making sure to include the rabbit since the lath will sit in there. Each lath construction will have vertical and horizonatal lath with filler for the ends. After measuring, simply cut the pieces to length and width. Now, mark the center of the horizontal lath pieces, spaced 1.5 inches apart. Then, mark the vertical lath position, again marking the rest 1.5 inches apart. Attach the pieces with glue on all contact points. How to Build a Clothes Hamper, Part 3: Bottom, Back, Hinge Board & Lid In Part 3 of this video series, the Lowe's Shop Class host, Keith Flippen, demonstrates how to build the bottom, back, hinge board and lid for a wooden clothes hamper. First, you will learn how to build the bottom panel, which is made up of 4 cleats (2 long and 2 short). Use a miter saw to cut the cleats to length. Then measure out the long cleats and attach with glue and nails. Follow up by aligning the short cleats to the long ones, attaching with glue and nails. Then you can cut out the bottom piece, cutting out notches on all 4 corners with a jigsaw. Finish by attaching the bottom with brads. The next portion of this video shows you how to create the back panel assembly. This is made of 2 pieces of plywood. Make sure the backs are facing each other, apply some glue and then sandwich them together. Finish by attaching to the back frame with brads. The next step is building the hinge board for the laundry hamper. First, cut on the table and miter saw. Then align with the exterior edge, making sure the overhang is equal on both sides. Attach the board with glue and nails. The last step in this video is building the hamper lid, which is created with a center panel and 3 nosing pieces. You will be cutting the nosing on an angle so they can meet at the corners of the lid. Test fit all the cut pieces. Once they fit well you can glue and attach with nails. How to Build a Clothes Hamper, Part 1: Frame Assembly In Part 1 of this video series, the Lowe's Shop Class host, Keith Flippen, demonstrates how to assemble the frame for a wooden clothes hamper. You will be building a box base that includes a front frame, back frame, two end frames and four legs. The frames are made up of two rails and two stiles with the bottom rail having a slight curve cut out. To begin building the frame, cut all rails and stiles to length and width. Cut an arch out of the bottom rail on each side using a jigsaw. Then, place pocket holes in the rails and stiles. Add glue and attach with pocket hole screws. Now you have 4 frames. Next, cut a rabbit on the inside of the frames for the panel attachments. Remember: the inside of the frame is the side with the pocket holes. Now, cut the legs to width and length. Then use pocket hole screws to attach the legs to the frame. Attach the smaller end frames with pocket hole screws. Make sure everything is square before moving on to Part 2.
