Animals Don't Need Technology Science Fiction: When different kinds of birds have the same adaptations, such similarities are not necessaily indicative of any familial relationship between bird species. Rather, they are the result of convergent evolution. Consider, for example, the marked resemblance in body size, shape, and coloration between flycatchers of several families, though these species are not closely related: the Asian Brown Flycatcher (of the Muscicapidae or Old World flycatcher family), Acadian Flycatcher (of the Tyrranidae or Tyrant flycatcher family) of the New World, and Slaty Monarch (of the Monarchidae or Monarch flycatcher family), endemic to Fiji. All three use flycatching to acquire some or all of their food. But these three families belong to separate branches of the evolutionary tree of songbirds, which diverged in two branching events some 60 and 90 million years ago and continued to evolve independently in different parts of the world. Likewise, the similarities of swifts and swallows once lead naturalists to conclude they were related, but it is now established that they are unrelated, and that the same lifestyle has led to the same adaptations. Real Science: The Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis), also known as Guácharo, is a bird found in the northern areas of South America (including the island of Trinidad in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago). They are nocturnal feeders on the fruits of the Oil Palm and tropical laurels, and are the only nocturnal fruit ...

Oilbird cave, Cueva del Guacharo National Park, Venezuela The sounds are from thousands of oilbirds which are fully nocturnal, live in caves and feed on fatty fruits, such as avocados. Their bodies are very oily and in the past, the natives used to collect them for their oil. Sometimes the flightless young were also used as torches because they burn well. They were first discovered by the explorer Humboldt at this cave and named after the nearby town of Caripe. The Latin name Steatornis caripensis means the oily bird of Caripe. (Valencia River) lower north oropuche hike on 14th August'11.mov The North Oropuche River can be described as the most eco-rich river in Trinidad. The precipitation of calcium carbonate along the stony river bed has filtered the water to created crystal clear pools and waterfalls making it one of the best hiking destinations. It source comes from the limestone region of Aripo as it journeys down the mountains passing through the Guacharo Cave and Cumaca Valley to exit in the region of Fishing Pond . WASA North Oropuche treatment plant draws water from the river to supply the people of Sangre Grande and surrounding districts. The Lower North Oropuche Hike starts at the popular bathing spot in Valencia also called Valencia River and a half mile walk upstream you will be transformed into a new world. It is nature at it finest ,the river widens and the travertine rocks along its bed has created countless magnificently shaped jacuzzi like pools. There is the option to explore further upstream where additional gorges, basins and waterfalls can be discovered. Please note :Although the hike is short (under 30minutes) and suitable for the entire family it does entail getting wet. It is recommended that you bring along a waterproof bag for your camera ,car remote and cell phone.Life jackets will be provided but if you have one bring it along. Spiny rat in Cueva de los Guacharos oilbird cave, Venezuela The cave has three species of rat. The spiny rat Proechimys guyanensis, the introduced black rat and this endemic spiny rat, whose latin name the guide did not know. He said this endemic species is only found inside these caves. They feed on the seeds excreted or dropped by birds and also by chicks that fall off the nests and die. There are a lot of ***roaches and centipedes, so they presumably eat them as well. The introduced black rat is increasing and the native species are decreasing as a result.
