The Lost Cuban Trios of Casa Marina "No Me Importa" Trio Zamora Trio Zamora was one of the groups that played in the brothel Casa Marina. The songs on Cuban Trios of Casa Marina are familiar and beloved Latin standards from a genteel, bygone era in popular Latin music. Like the Buena Vista Social Club, this record evokes nostalgia for classic sounds from the 30s, 40s and 50s . Though "No Me Importa" is original Zamora song most of the rest of the of the recordings from this cd were .remakes of old standards, these are the original recordings made in pre-Castro Havana, now available to the public for the first time. A different revolution, the digital one, allowed for the transfer of the original ***og tapes from 1958. The two immigrant brothers who made it possible are Harry and Morris Schrage. They were just 10 and 13 when their family had to flee the *** invasion of their native Poland in 1939. A cross-Atlantic voyage brought them to Havana, then the sin city of the Caribbean and a haven for gambling, fabulous floor shows and first-class bordellos. The Schrages settled in neighboring Matanzas, where their enterprising father rebuilt his fortune making sneakers. As young adults, Harry and Morris worked in the family business, earning enough to live the life of privileged playboys. The fun-loving siblings soon became regulars at Havana's most exclusive and cosmopolitan brothel, the fabled Casa Marina, which drew a wealthy international clientele. Casa Marina was known for the exceptional beauty of its bevy of women ...

They then ask if America is beautiful without Medicare? I have my own question for the Agenda Project: was America beautiful before Medicare?

Sin By Silence Trialer: DOXA2010 Festival Olivia Klaus, USA, 2009, 49 minutes Friday, May 14 | 2:00pm | Pacific Cinémathèque It starts with a backhand and ends with a gun in your face, is how one of the inmates in the California Institution for Women explains the process of abuse. Of the millions of women subject to violence and death at the hands of their husbands and partners, a few fight back. After enduring years of broken bones, skull fractures and bloody bruises, Brenda Clubine killed her husband and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. When Brenda decided to write a letter to the Governor of California asking for help to form a womens group, she had little idea that her desire to create a place where women could tell their stories would have such an enormous impact. The first inmate initiated and led group in US prison history, Convicted Women Against Abuse (CWAA) was formed in 1989. Olivia Klaus film makes a powerful indictment of a justice system that further victimizes women who have already suffered years of brutality and pain. Battered Womens Syndrome is currently recognized as legitimate defense, but many of the women in CWAA were convicted prior to 1982 and are serving life sentences. As one lawyer says, These women are in prison because of the process, not because of their cases, not because of the facts of their cases. Many of the members of CWAA have eerily similar experiences, including men who kept them isolated, physically and mentally beaten, systematically removing every source of support ...

Amor Mio - Trio Zamora From the album: The Lost Cuban Trios of Casa Marina The story of these romantic recordings of traditional trio music plays like a cinematic saga. It starts with two Jewish boys who fled from the ***s, settled in Cuba and fell in love with the island and its pleasures, especially its beautiful women and seductive sounds. It ends 50 years later with the release of this CD of vintage recordings that survived the Cuban Revolution, a second exile journey, and finally decades of neglect in storage in rainy Seattle. All the songs on Cuban Trios of Casa Marina are familiar and beloved Latin standards from a genteel, bygone era in popular Latin music. Like the Buena Vista Social Club, this record evokes nostalgia for classic sounds from the 30s, 40s and 50s. But instead of remakes of old standards, these are the original recordings made in pre-Castro Havana, now available to the public for the first time. Applebee's Takes on Social Media with New Ad Campaign Applebee's has a new social media ad campaign that puts a unique twist on the social services that so many of us have become addicted to. "Life Is Better Shared" is the theme of the campaign, and the idea is to demonstrate that in-person, face-to-face interaction is more appealing than virtual communications. The campaign is geared toward women and is an extension of Applebee's "Girls Night Out" campaign from last year. Cornett Integrated Marketing Solutions is the ad agency responsible for both campaigns, and, according to Jeff Han***, the Creative Director at the agency, they decided to broaden the audience of females to include both young women and those with families. He explained that this would help them better reach Applebee's owner Thomas & King's ultimate goal of increasing bar sales. "Life Is Better Shared" is a online video campaign that uses the "Applebee's Girls Night Out Goddess" to show that there is no substitute for good old-fashioned talking around the dinner table and laughing out loud, in the literal sense. Christy Hiler, Cornett's Chief Strategic Officer, told us that the goddess represents a grandmotherly-type who can get by with making fun of how much time women spend on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Although the humorous campaign is still in its early stages, Cornett indicated that it had already been successful.
Russian Grandmother Kills Wolf with an Axe A Russian grannie kills a wolf that attacked her with an axe. Full story: Call it a reversal of the "Little Red Riding Hood." When a 56-year-old grandmother in southern Russia was attacked by a wolf, she killed it with an axe. Aishat Maksudova is part of a village in the Dagestan region. She was herding cows and sheep when she heard one of the calves cry. It was being attacked by a wolf, and the pensioner rushed to shoo the wolf away. When the wolf decided to attack Maksudova in turn, she fought back. [Aishat Maksudova, Attacked by Wolf]: "I was not even frightened. I stood like this, holding an axe like this. And the wolf with an open mouth suddenly jumped on me. Jumped like that. The wolf clawed into my leg, and I wanted to hit him with the axe." The two engaged in a dire fight. [Aishat Maksudova]: "When I raised my arm up like this, the wolf was just holding my hand. Trying to claw my hand. I wanted to open his mouth and put my fist all the way there, all the way to his throat. But I could not open him. So I just left my hand, and the wolf was just clawing into it, pulling on it, pulling away like this. And then I took the axe and hit him on his head." The grandmother won the battle. Stunned villagers used their cellphones to record the dead wolf with a bloodied face from Maksudova's blow. In turn, some villagers have begun practicing with axes. Sylvia Plath - Wuthering Heights - Ted Hughes Ted Hughes reads Sylvia Plath's Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights by Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) The horizons ring me like faggots, Tilted and disparate, and always unstable. Touched by a match, they might warm me, And their fine lines singe The air to orange Before the distances they pin evaporate, Weighting the pale sky with a solider color. But they only dissolve and dissolve Like a series of promises, as I step forward. There is no life higher than the grasstops Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind Pours by like destiny, bending Everything in one direction. I can feel it trying To funnel my heat away. If I pay the roots of the heather Too close attention, they will invite me To whiten my bones among them. The sheep know where they are, Browsing in their dirty wool-clouds, Gray as the weather. The black slots of their pupils take me in. It is like being mailed into space, A thin, silly message. They stand about in grandmotherly disguise, All wig curls and yellow teeth And hard, marbly baas. I come to wheel ruts, and water Limpid as the solitudes That flee through my fingers. Hollow doorsteps go from grass to grass; Lintel and sill have unhinged themselves. Of people and the air only Remembers a few odd syllables. It rehearses them moaningly: Black stone, black stone. The sky leans on me, me, the one upright Among all horizontals. The grass is beating its head distractedly. It is too delicate For a life in such company; Darkness terrifies it. Now, in valleys narrow And ...
Cutie's Cinema Corner: Joan Rivers - A Piece of Work In this episode, Cutie and granddaughter Chinta take in a Friday matinee of the well-received Joan Rivers documentary "A Piece of Work." While Cutie likes Joan's personality and pep, she's underwhelmed by the film, and takes the opportunity to teach Chinta the grandmotherly art of walking out on a movie just late enough that a reasonable amount of time gets killed, but the theater manager will still give you vouchers to come back another day.
If You Hope... [Chapter 4: Jacob's Earth Shattering News] Chapter 4 Jacob's Earth Shattering News (Jazlie's POV) The last period passed fairly quickly. Just like my other classes, I didn't have Elizabeth, Madeline, or Kylee in there. When we went outside to wait to be picked up, we saw the minivan our grandmother had recently bought, well it wasn't recent. She bought it when all of us kids were born; she wanted to be more grandmotherly. We all piled into the minivan. Since Renesmee was the oldest, she climbed into the passenger seat, next to our grandmother. Next were two seats separated from each other, kind of like business chairs. In those seats sat Jaxon and Christopher. Then there was a row of three seats that were occupied by Mason, Syrena, and Greggory. Then another row of three seats. In that row sat Elizabeth, Madeline, and Kylee. That left me, by my lonesome, in the back row. While we were driving home, Grandma kept asking things like 'How was your first day? Were the other kids nice? Did anything interesting happen?' No one really wanted to talk about the John thing, so Madeline went into a speech about how all the kids were avoiding us and kept whispering and how it was getting annoying. "I know it's hard kids," She sighed once Madeline had concluded her lecture. "But that is unfortunately the way our lives go. You just need to keep your head up and remember that it doesn't matter what those kids say." Madeline smiled at her, obviously pleased with what our grandmother had said. "Thanks, Grandma." "You're welcome ...

Best Fire-eater EVER This is Ringo, the best fire-eater in England. Somebody get this guy on Britain's Got Talent, quick! The queen needs to see this! The best part was, as I was leaving the gig he was performing at, he was outside talking to somebody, and I saw this 80 year old lady come up to him and ask (very concerned in a grandmotherly way) "How's your pubic hair?". Hilarious.
Stella's Stocking - Atari 2600 Homebrew Stella's Stocking is an original Atari 2600 homebrew game published by AtariAge: Stella's Stocking was the 2007 AtariAge Holiday Cart and now it's available again in case you missed it the first time around! Stella's Stocking isn't one, but FIVE different games! A large team of programmers, artists and designers worked hard to create a very unique offering on the 2600. From the moment you fire up Stella's Stocking you'll realize you have something special. To cram five different games into this cartridge, along with a menu that features quite possibly the best music ever heard in a 2600 game, we created a new 64K board just for this release! This is the first (and presently only) 64K Atari 2600 game that we've published. Each game included in Stella's Stocking is briefly described below * Stay Frosty -- You were just chilling out at the North Pole, when a short-circuiting string of Christmas lights on Santa's barn set the reindeer dust on fire. Now magic fireballs are threatening to melt everything. It's up to you to put them out so you can keep your cool, however that's not an easy task for someone made of frozen water! * Elf Dash -- Holly the elf sighed. Santa is on his flight, the warehouse is locked up, and the big year-end party starts in 10 minutes. What a year! The elf magic to make toys load themselves in the sleigh went haywire sending toys flying around knocking elves down. The elevators went nuts too, and won't stop running. Holly grimaced as a ...

Entymology 2 - The Sequin Passchendaele, the grandmotherly praying mantis, finds herself at odds with an interfering cosmetics salesperson, Lameela the ladybird. Directed by Portia McLean and Stephen Clothier This is the sequel to our earlier short film, entitled "Entymology". We used stop-motion animation as well as still-frame images and regular filming to create this film, which was for our NCEA Level 3 Media Studies practical assignment. Apologies for the quality on some of the moving footage, something went a bit haywire when we exported it from Final Cut. :S

Advice from my Grandmother On my 30th birthday, I filmed my beloved 89 year old maternal grandmother talking about her life. Here is a small piece of the video we created. She is truly a beautiful treasure and one of my most favorite people in the world.
Plane crash Austin texas 3 In retrospect, the situation was laughable because here I was living on peanut butter and bread (or Ritz crackers when I could afford to splurge) for months at a time. When I got to know this poor figure and heard her story I felt worse for her plight than for my own (I, after all, I thought I had everything to in front of me). I was genuinely appalled at one point, as we exchanged stories and commiserated with each other over our situations, when she in her grandmotherly fashion tried to convince me that I would be healthier eating cat food (like her) rather than trying to get all my substance from peanut butter and bread. I couldnt quite go there, but the impression was made. I decided that I didnt trust big business to take care of me, and that I would take responsibility for my own future and myself. Return to the early 80s, and here I was off to a terrifying start as a wet-behind-the-ears contract software engineer and two years later, thanks to the fine backroom, midnight effort by the sleazy executives of Arthur Andersen (the very same folks who later brought us Enron and other such calamities) and an equally sleazy New York Senator (Patrick Moynihan), we saw the passage of 1986 tax reform act with its section 1706. For you who are unfamiliar, here is the core text of the IRS Section 1706, defining the treatment of workers (such as contract engineers) for tax purposes. Animal Yakuza by Holly Lanasolyluna (Toy Cabaret) Holly Lanasolyluna's set is interrupted by her nosy oba-chan (grandmotherly) neighbor who is concerned about all the, AHEM, ¨noise¨ she heard from the apartment last night. Was it a jishin (earthquake)? No, just a ¨friendly¨ visit. ;) But there is some gossip to shake things up--someone stole Lanasolyluna´s favorite kitty underpants. And there is only 1 possible culprit: the animal yakuza. And will she get her yakuza crush (Panda-san) to call her by singing this song? Feel free to wiggle and jiggle like gelatin as you watch. This was the debut of this song, performed at Cafe Kick in Shimokitazawa. Holly Lanasolyluna is a Californian songwriter specializing in toy cabarets. She is interested in performances, recording, and various collaborations and currently resides in Tokyo, Japan. For contact or more information about her art and music, please visit:

Grandmotherly Love - Against All Odds, A kitten survives. Ulvika Lilia, our four year old silver and white tabby Norwegian Forest Cat, saved her grand-daughter's life when she was 3 weeks old. Rusty had a stroke, leaving her paralysed from the waist down. Within minutes, Lilia started to lick Rusty, frantically. This was to stimulate the kitten's bladder, which, if not emptied, would have caused a lethal infection. She continued to do this for days, while we, her owners, hand-fed her with cream cheese and water. Her Mum couldn't cope as a first time mother, and happily trusted her own mother, Lilia, to deal with the situation. After two anxious weeks, Rusty recovered the use of one hind leg, and started to scoot around the floor using one hind leg, and her little tail as a rudder. She would climb the stairs simply using her upper body. Our wonderful vet suggested that she might survive if the other hind leg that had no muscle development was amputated. Two days before her appointment for the operation, Rusty started to twitch her other hind leg. Within a few hours, she was pushing herself up with it, and she can now walk normally. She plays and enjoys life at 8 weeks old with her entire family, her mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunts and grandfather. She is, as our vet said, "A feisty tortie fighter", and has confirmed that very few kittens ever survive such a lesion, and that it was Lilia who saved her life.
Hattie Hattie Denton owned the North Fork general store during the first 2 years of The Rifleman. She was a sweet, grandmotherly type lady who loved Lucas and Mark. She was my favorite store keeper on the show! There was something special about this lady. So this is dedicated in the memory of Hope Summers.

Check up call from Babci This is a recording of my grandmother (aka Babci, the Polish equivalent to grandmother), calling me (Eric) up during a snow storm to see how me and my brother (Briand) are handling being stuck inside after a snowstorm, and seeing how my recent cold is coming along. In the second part, I inform her that I did shovel snow, since my parents are stuck overnight in New York after attending a Billy Joel concert. My Babci passed away on August 3, 2012 at the age of 93. I will miss her greatly, and all of her advice and grandmotherly concern, even though she despised my lack of haircuts.
