Ballenas Secondary - Grad 2006 - Valedictorian Speech Click "more" for a transcript. Max Johnson, Grad 2006 Valedictorian for Ballenas Secondary School, gives the next-to-last speech of the evening. MR. WITTE: [Inaudible], I can see the home stretch coming now. Max... Johnson, could you please come up and do the Valedictorian [inaudible]? MAX'S MOTHER: Yeah. [APPLAUSE] MAX: ...Just a little bit? [Inaudible] "Suuuue"... okay. Ladies and Gentlemen: Honored guests, teachers, parents, family members, school board officials, fellow students, and fellow grads: Thank you. You can all breathe a sigh of relief now. We're finally coming to the end. It's hard to believe that 13 years of our lives have gone by so quickly. In the beginning, in elementary school, all we had to do was learn what the letters of the alphabet were and where they go; now we've taken classes like Math 12, where we learned that, no, the letters of the alphabet mean different things entirely. Middle school was transitional, just three short years between fun and responsibility, and it was over before a lot of us really adjusted to the routine of actually having to do work. And now, here we are, and we've finished high school, the place that seemed so scary and ominous when our older siblings and their friends went there every day -- and had to do homework and everything. It's a testament to the care and the skill of our teachers and community that we've made it through this period of our lives and became the finely crafted people you see today.... We're grateful ...

Does America Really Need More College Grads? - George Leef Complete video at: fora.tv George Leef, Director of Research at the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, deconstructs several common arguments that propose the need for increasing the number of college graduates in the US Leef argues that the number of people with college degrees currently outweighs the number of jobs that require them, and suggests that graduating more people will only lead to "credential inflation." ----- The rapid growth of China, India, Brazil and other emerging powers has dramatically altered the complexion of the global economy in recent years. At the same time, rising deficits, high trade imbalances, a declining dollar, and a lingering economic downturn have placed America's position within the global economy in peril-and have policymakers deliberating over the keys to America's economic future. One area often cited as critical to the nation's future economic strength is higher education, particularly that America must dramatically increase the number of college-educated citizens to remain a leading economic power. - Miller Center for Public Affairs George Leef is Director of Research at the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy in Raleigh, NC. He was previously on the faculty of Northwood University and a policy adviser in the Michigan Senate. What does job market hold for college grads? May 20, 2009 (NECN) - School is out and summer is ahead, but for college students, that means trying to stay afloat in the worst economy their generation has known. According to an AP/MTVU poll, 22 percent of students polled say they worry about having enough money to get through the week. One in five decided to go to graduate school, worried an undergraduate degree might not be enough to get them a job, and eleven percent of those whose parents last a job veered away from grad school, because they can not afford it. So what does the job market hold for new college graduates? says the situation is not as bad you might think. Founder and CEO Jenny Floren joins us with the surprising results of the 2009 annual jobs survey.

New RN Grad Job Shortage This segment could be better, and the news reporter sends a couple of inaccurate messages, but this is a start. To say there is no longer a nursing shortage is inaccurate. There is still a nursing shortage, and experts say that it may be detrimental to claim that there is no longer a shortage. Also the media suggests for new nurses to relocate and/or or look for jobs in long term care (or other areas). However, this is happening all over the nation, in every nursing area/field. Long-term care, acute care, public health, etc., are all short right now on positions for new grads. New grads can get hired, and there are positions out there, but there are far fewer positions than what is needed. According to USA Today (2010), the recession is masking the nursing shortage. Right now, due to the recession, the nursing shortage has eased a bit. This is partly due to the large number of experienced nurses not leaving the workforce, and experienced nurses coming back after being retired. However, due this, there is lack of vacancies for new nurses. New nurses are being denied positions. This could potentially result in a crisis. The "baby boomers" are continuing to age, leading to the largest geriatric population. The older experienced nurses will eventually retire. This will result in more patients and less nurses, and is why there is a prediction that within the next 10-15 years, we will face an alarming nursing shortage. Turning away new graduates leads to fewer nurses available ...

Kite Runner author tells grads to continue learning Novelist Khaled Hosseini wished Vanderbilt graduates prosperity in their post-college lives, but suggested they stay connected to suffering in the world by tithing 5 percent of their time or money to those less fortunate. Hosseini, author of the bestsellers The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, spoke May 13 in Memorial Gymnasium to 2010 graduates, their friends and family members. I ask you to seek out people in your community in need to try not just to understand them, but to help them, Hosseini said. It is hard to make a connection with people who are suffering. It requires you to take on some of that pain for yourself. It makes you see a kinship with misfortune, and to see how it could happen to you, and how it would make you feel. Hosseini is the 2010 winner of Vanderbilts Nichols-Chancellor Medal, one of the universitys highest honors, which is given to individuals who define the 21st century and exemplify the best qualities of the human spirit. It was created and endowed by Vanderbilt Law School graduate Ed Nichols and his wife, Janice, in honor of Edward Carmack and Lucile Hamby Nichols. The medal comes with a cash award.
