Baby Gentoo Penguin Chick 222 A behind the scenes video of a 1 week old Gentoo penguin at the Shedd Aquarium.

Very happy Gentoo penguin This has got to be one very, very relieved penguin! Just to be clear, I DID NOT TAKE THIS VIDEO, and nor did I add the (annoying) music. This video was given to me by the chef at Vernadsky, the Ukrainian research station about 90 miles south of where I'm currently living (Palmer Station, Antarctica). And even then, I don't think he took the video himself, either. I honestly don't know it's original source. If you want to follow my experiences of working down here on the highest, driest, coldest, harshest continent, check out my blog;

Guild Wars Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Cedega (HD) Please watch in HD: Title: Guild WarsOperating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Cedega Graphics API: Direct3D 9 Recording Software: recordmydesktop and arecord This is Guild Wars under Gentoo Linux. I am using cedega and the game is running in Direct3D 9 mode. I am recording video with recordmydesktop and the audio is being recorded with arecord. I record them separately because the audio goes out-of-sync otherwise (though it goes out-of-sync this way a little it isn't near as bad.) I prefer to use cedega to run Guild Wars because you can play in DirectX 9 mode with the graphics maxed and post-processing effects enabled. The only exception is shadows which work but often don't render completely. As you can see throughout the video when I mouse over the status the framerate is very high despite using these graphics options. You will notice some choppiness. This is not normal. It occurs because I am recording 3D in Linux. There is a long way to go when it comes to recording 3D in Linux. GLC is a good way to do it if you want just the game itself but if you want to record a game on the desktop recordmydesktop is really the best option. But it is a pain to get good results with it and you will get some choppiness as seen in the video. Refer to the fps counter to see what the game performance actually is. Keep in mind that the performance would still be better if there was no recording and the desktop compositing effects were disabled. I ...

Runes of Magic Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Wine (HD) Title: Runes of MagicOperating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Wine Recording Software: ffmpeg's x11grab This is Runes of Magic under Gentoo Linux using wine. Runes of Magic is a free-to-download and free-to-play MMORPG. The game was installed in cedega but it does not currently run in cedega so I am running it with wine. I used the multi-part download to install. According to the apps database it should install fine in wine as well. This was recorded after just a couple of minutes running the game. I have not done any tweaking to improve the framerate or changed many settings in the game. This is after simply clicking the "High" graphics option and going. I recorded this with ffmpeg. The game cursor shows a black border in the video but that is an artifact of the capture software. That was not present in the game. Also, on the character select screen I get a crash report dialog. It does not seem to have any affect on the game unless I try to move it. If I try to move that dialog the game will freeze. Instead I simply click within the game window and let the dialog sit behind it. I am not sure if this happens when running fullscreen or not. Links: Wine: ROM Appdb Entry Official Runes of Magic Site: Please rate if you like this video. I look forward to making more videos of games running in Linux and Mac OS X. World of Warcraft Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Cedega - Azeroth Flight (HD) Title: World of WarcraftOperating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Cedega Graphics API: Direct3D Recording Software: recordmydesktop and arecord This is a flight in Azeroth under Gentoo Linux. I am using cedega and the game is running in Direct3D mode. I am recording video with recordmydesktop and the audio is being recorded with arecord. I record them separately because the audio goes out-of-sync otherwise (though it goes out-of-sync this way a little it isn't near as bad.) I prefer Direct3D when running WoW in cedega because it is well supported and you can enable effects that are not available in the OpenGL renderer (though they could be if Blizzard would get off their asses and backport the Mac OS X OpenGL enhancements.) These effects include real-time shadows and fog effects. Hardware mouse is also exclusive to Direct3D mode. You will notice some choppiness. This is not normal. It occurs because I am recording 3D in Linux. There is a long way to go when it comes to recording 3D in Linux. Diving with Juvenile Gentoo Penguins Thought to be slow and clumsy on land, Gentoo penguins can actually outrun a man over short distances. Certainly penguins are agile and fast when in the water. This is the fastest swimming species of penguin, and they use this skill when hunting krill, fish and squid. During a dive at Barrientos Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, these birds showed just how curious they can be! More films at

Silent Hill 2 Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Cedega (HD) Please watch in HD: Title: Silent Hill 2Operating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Cedega Recording Software: recordmydesktop and arecord This is Silent Hill 2 under Gentoo Linux using cedega. I am recording video with recordmydesktop and the audio is being recorded with arecord. I record them separately because the audio goes out-of-sync otherwise (though it goes out-of-sync this way a little it isn't near as bad.) I am controlling the game with a standard XBox 360 gamepad. The pad is connected to the Microsoft wireless receiver and it works great under Linux using the xpad kernel module. Cedega auto-detects it. Update: Recently I have started using ffmpeg to record my videos. I no longer have issues with buffer overrun occuring during capture. That means I no longer have to manually remove freezes and desync during editing and the jumps seen in this video would be eliminated. Please rate if you like this video. I look forward to making more videos of games running in Linux and Mac OS X. Here are my system specs as per the cedega ...

Distro Review: Gentoo Linux First off, I realize that I just barely scratched the surface with this review. I thought about going through the install procedure, but I have no interest in editing hours of video down to just a few minutes. :) I wanted to show that Gentoo has a very decent community behind it and that with a little work, you can actually make it work for you. It's not quite as scary as I once thought. Gentoo: 10 years compiling codeswarm This video was generated by Gentoo Developer, Patrick Lauer, using codeswarm. It visualizes more than 10 years of commits to the Gentoo portage tree. Its a rather exciting experience to watch milestone after milestone dance on the screen. This is definite proof that Gentoo is not dead, nor is it dying. Please watch and enjoy! Your comments are welcome. [edit] The video's creator has posted some more information here:

Star Wars: KOTOR Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Cedega (HD) Title: Star Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicOperating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Cedega Recording Software: ffmpeg's x11grab This is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic under Gentoo Linux using cedega. I recorded this with ffmpeg. For some reason this is not an officially supported cedega title (even though the sequel is) but the install was flawless and the gameplay is flawless. Without AA enabled the framerate was insane often going over 1000fps. It was impossible to get a smooth recording with that framerate so the 8x AA serves both the purpose of making the game look great and keeping the framerate reasonable enough to record the video. Remember that you cannot enable AA with nvidia-settings (or environment variables or anyother system-wide AA method) if you have FBO enabled in cedega. This game does not need FBO to be enabled. The widescreen resolution the game uses in the video requires that the game executable be patched with a widescreen patcher. This application works fine in cedega and so does the manual 1.03 patch. While I used 1440x900 and a window in this video I regularly play the game in 1680x1050 fullscreen. You can use the patcher to get pretty much whatever resolution you want. In the links below the issues and solutions presented are largely outdated and unneeded. The only one that I know of that is still correct is that the online patcher does not work. You will need to enable hardware cursor, despite the recommendations ...

Using Gentoo Linux in K-12 School's Computer Lab GHCA built custom computers from bare-bone systems using the Gentoo distribution of the Linux operating system. This video interviews system administrator Michael Surran, exploring the details as to why the school switched to Gentoo and how Gentoo is used to improve productivity and functionality. Of particular interest is the use of distributed compiled computing (distcc) among the 20 Athlon computers to greatly speed the software building process. UPDATE - this video is quite old, so we now run Neoware thin clients with LCD Dell Monitors. However, we're still using Gentoo! To learn more, visit

Command And Conquer 3 Running On Linux (Gentoo) With Cedega (HD) Title: Command and Conquer 3Operating System: Gentoo Linux AMD64 Compatibility Layer: Cedega Recording Software: ffmpeg's x11grab This is Command and Conquer 3 under Gentoo Linux using cedega. I recorded this with ffmpeg. ffmpeg is providing a big improvement to my videos over my previous recording methods. It is resulting in smoother video and audio that stays synced throughout. Currently x11grab will paint a white mouse cursor which sticks to the middle of the screen while running a game and you will not get your actual desktop icon or a games icon. In order to get the real icon I had to add support to the code. I will be submitting a patch to the ffmpeg devs for this feature. Please rate if you like this video. Gentoo's documentation SUCKS! Wander_Free_Forever wastes more of his life trying to install Gentoo 10.1 onto his virtual hard disk. Lets face it, their documentation sucks and sucks hard then blows then sucks again. Especially when Fdisk is missing. Oh but that is topped by the Konsel crashing for no reason, lol. Oh and by the way, where is a user's desktop? That is a question for Wander due to the fact that he can not find it!
