Garbo and Gilbert - The Beauty of Silence This famous scene from `Flesh and the Devil (1926) is an exemplar of silent film art. No sound sequence could match its romantic intensity. Despite the intertitles, what makes the scene unforgettable is the way it depicts the moments for which there are no words; the times where the deepest communications occur in silence. Though we instinctively look to Garbo today, Gilbert was the more famous of the two when `Flesh and the Devil' was filmed. He was considered a master of the intense romantic moment, and he discovered just how important they were when sound arrived. Scenes such as this, when accompanied by hackneyed and unnecessary dialogue, completely lost their sense of intimacy. While it is often claimed that Gilbert's voice was unsuited to sound, it was in fact his persona that could not make the transition. Had he still been alive, Rudolph Valentino would probably have suffered the same fate. As Gilbert's star fell, Garbo's soared - perhaps because her natural reserve and the mystery behind her eyes proved as compelling as silence in any role, no matter the dialogue. Which agitation in front of this me Who seems to pass very close to the other Which agitation in front of the faith One which pushes the other It is the loneliness of space Who resounds in us One is so only sometimes I want to believe whereas an angel passes That he says to us law I am here for you And you it's me But which is the other Which strange messenger But which is the other Your face is familiar But which is the other In you my life took refuge It is a friend, it's him You and me of the end of the fingers We will weave another Another me, another voice Without one driving out the other I have in my memory my weaknesses But with the hollow of the hands All my forces too But then to overcome sadness To overcome its doubts We need a friend The friend it is him

Scott Reisfield talkes about Greta Garbo's relationships Garbo was considered one of the most glamorous movie stars of the 1920s and 1930s. She was also famous for shunning publicity, which became part of her mystique. Except at the very beginning of her career, she granted no interviews, signed no autographs, attended no premieres, and answered no fan mail. Her famous byline was always said to be, "I want to be alone," spoken with a heavy accent which made the word 'want' sound like vont. This quote as noted comes from her role in Grand Hotel. However, Garbo later commented, "I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is all the difference."

Moda Entertainment - Greta Garbo Interview with nephew Scott Riesfield Listen to the interview on "Garbo talks!" "Garbo laughs!" The clichés abound. "I vant to be alone" Not true, never said. Nor was MGM's publicity juggernaut hardly above the fray. As its 1926 publicity release demonstrates: "Greta Garbo, discovered in stark(?!?) Sweden, is setting the heart of America aflame." And yet, behind every cliché is a buried kernel. Greta Garbo did indeed set the heart of America aflame. From her first silent films: The Torrent and The Temptress, both in 1926, Garbo reigned. Her ability to convey emotion, inner turmoil, through her expression alone, signaled a new style of film acting (mirrored among male actors at the exact same moment by Gary Cooper). Garbo and Cooper were acting from the inside-out, letting their eyes reveal the inner truth. Decades later, this would become known as the Method, but Garbo and Cooper were first out of the starting gate. Which makes the fact that Cooper turned down Ninotchka opposite Garbo even more a shame. Cooper & Garbo in Ninotchka ... now there's a marquee. Garbo starred in so many films throughout the twenties and thirties: Flesh And The Devil Love The Kiss Anna Christie Mata Hari Grand Hotel The Painted Veil Anna Karenina Camille Queen Christina Ninotchka Each captures different aspects of her extraordinary screen presence. Yet, it is one of her lesser efforts that allowed Garbo to convey a myriad of emotions -- mystery, tragedy, humor. It's all there in Susan Lenox, Her Fall And Rise ...

The Film that Made Garbo a Star: The Saga of Gosta Berling Video essay on The Saga of Gosta Berling (1924, dir. Mauritz Stiller), with commentary by Jan Olsson, Professor of Cinema Studies at Stockholm Univeristy, Sweden. Film available on Kino DVD. Part of the Shooting Down Pictures Project. For more information visit /shooting. THIS VIDEO UTILIZES COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL UNDER THE FAIR USE PROVISIONS OF THE DIGITAL MILLENNIUM COPYRIGHT ACT. TRANSCRIPT: The Saga of Gosta Berling is Mauritz Stiller's epic adaptation of Selma Lagerlof's immensely popular novel. The film, in two intallments ran well over three hours when it was originally released in Sweden in 1924. In a famous letter to the director, Lagerlof voiced dissent concerning the film version and its liberties over the text. The plot follows its title character, a young defrocked minister, who is entangled in various romantic and political intrigues with various parties connected to the grand Ekeby estate. Among his chief adversaries is Martha Dohna, the grand matron of one of the neighboring estates; among his chief allies is Countess Elizabeth, played by Greta Garbo. The Saga of Gösta Berling is best known as Garbos first major role. Dismissed by critics after the fist part, but celebrated for the second, the success under Stillers tutelage fueled one of the most remarkable acting careers in the history of the medium. Stillers close-ups and halo-like lighting paved the ground for the Garbo myth, which was totally unexpected given her early Swedish work in a ...

The Starlet Series~Episode Two~1930's Greta Garbo Inspired Look Here is episode two of the series, featuring the severe but elegant look of Greta Garbo. Keep in mind that sometimes I will over-dramaticize certain aspects of the look to make an impact on camera, such as the brows. If you were to re-create this look for a party or event, you would more than likely use a lighter shade for the brow. Enjoy! The products I used are basically the same ones I used in my Clara Bow tutorial. Thanks for Watching! A Blog Entry dedicated to Greta will be posted some time today. :)

Greta Garbo Beauty of Silent Film Swedish actress primarily known for her work in the United States during Hollywood's silent film period and part of its Golden Age. The most well received of Garbo's silent movies were Flesh and the Devil (1927), Love (1927) and The Mysterious Lady (1928). She starred in the first two with the popular leading man John Gilbert. Her name was linked with his in a much publicized romance, and she was said to have left him standing at the altar in 1926, when she changed her mind about getting married. ~ There are some who want to get married and others who don't. I have never had an impulse to go to the altar. I am a difficult person to lead~Greta Garbo~

Greta Garbo. Et Pourtant ... My small tribute to Greta Garbo! After Marlene, Garbo is my second favorite actress! I have long intended to devote my video to this divine woman , and finally did it. Nothing special, I only wanted that it were beautiful. For music, I immediately chose Mylene Farmer, because firstly, the lyrics of many of her songs suited to the image of Garbo, secondly, Mylene also a very big Garbos fan , and third, the most part of my life I'm admirer of creativity of this French singer. Her song, "Greta" wasnt considered by me at all. But I had to choose from other Mylene's songs , and even now I doubt in my choice.

MGM history of Greta Garbo ignores her European career "The MGM history of Garbo pretty much ignores her European career." said Scott Reisfield, great-nephew of Greta Garbo. "It was her decision to present her as an actress that they had discovered and created, that they really didn't put much into their biography about the European life of the woman that she was from Europe. But Garbo came to the United States as a well trained European actress. She had grown up in Stockholm and earned a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. And her class was small - it was eight people basically. She was a part on an interesting group. Her class included a famous reader's director Alf Sjöberg, who was a life time friend, who was very well known as a teacher of acting to other actors and actresses and two actors who had decades of careers on stage and in film and in television in Sweden. So her class was a very interesting group by itself and accomplished a lot she was perhaps the most famous member of it."
