Moby-Dick-Chapter0039 Moby-Dick, by Herman Melville. CHAPTER 39. First Night Watch. Fore-Top. (STUBB SOLUS, AND MENDING A BRACE.) Ha! ha! ha! ha! hem! clear my throat!--I've been thinking over it ever since, and that ha, ha's the final consequence. Why so? Because a laugh's the wisest, easiest answer to all that's queer; and come what will, one comfort's always left--that unfailing comfort is, it's all predestinated. I heard not all his talk with Starbuck; but to my poor eye Starbuck then looked something as I the other evening felt. Be sure the old Mogul has fixed him, too. I twigged it, knew it; had had the gift, might readily have prophesied it--for when I clapped my eye upon his skull I saw it. Well, Stubb, WISE Stubb--that's my title--well, Stubb, what of it, Stubb? Here's a carcase. I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing. Such a waggish leering as lurks in all your horribles! I feel funny. Fa, la! lirra, skirra! What's my juicy little pear at home doing now? Crying its eyes out?--Giving a party to the last arrived harpooneers, I dare say, gay as a frigate's pennant, and so am I--fa, la! lirra, skirra! Oh-- We'll drink to-night with hearts as light, To love, as gay and fleeting As bubbles that swim, on the beaker's brim, And break on the lips while meeting. A brave stave that--who calls? Mr. Starbuck? Aye, aye, sir--(ASIDE) he's my superior, he has his too, if I'm not mistaken.--Aye, aye, sir, just through with this job--coming.

IRAM Sponsor Mustang, Prairie Lark IRAM Sponsor Mustang, Prairie Lark Words by Dayton O. Hyde Narrated by Martin Meyer From Imagine A Place Sponsor Mustangs DVD Directed/Edited by Christopher Crosby Blue roan mare born in the desert in Nevada gathered 1987 Released at IRAM Aug. 15, 1988 I first laid eyes on Lark at the wild horse holding facility in Bloomfield, Nebraska in 1988. I was sitting on a fence watching hundreds of newly captured wild horses, when a beautiful blue roan filly came out of the herd and trotted toward me. It was as though she knew I was setting up a sanctuary for wild horses, and was determined to be the first one on the truck. The filly had large black lustrous eyes wide set in a head of blackest ebony, with a thick mane and a lush foretop hanging almost to her flaring nostrils. Just what she saw in me, I'll never know, but she followed me down the fence when I left nickering loudly, calling for me to turn back. She needn't have worried. Five minutes later, I had paid my fee and signed papers for her adoption. Along with three hundred other mustangs, Prairie Lark, was shipped to my Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota. For a time I was too busy tending to the new arrivals to single her out, but one evening as I was setting up a camp in Chilson Canyon, she came down off the rim rocks to visit me. From then on she never left my side, soon I could slip up on her bareback and ride her back into the canyons. In my lifetime I have never ridden her equal. But sometimes I would ...

Flag Alphabet ~ International maritime signal flags International maritime signal flags ~ Flag Alphabet The system of international maritime signal flags is one system of flag signals representing individual letters of the alphabet in signals to or from ships. It is a component of the International Code of Signals (ICS).[1] Naval flag signalling undoubtably developed in antiquity in order to coordinate naval action of multiple vessels. In the Peloponnesian War (431 -- 401 BCE) squadrons of Athenian galleys were described by Thucydides as engaging in coordinated maneuvers which would have required some kind of communication;[1] there is no record of how such communication was done but flags would have been the most likely method. Flags have long been used to identify a ship's owner or nationality, or the commander of a squadron. But the use of flags for signalling messages long remained primitive, as indicated by the 1530 instruction that when the Admiral doth doth shote of a pece of Ordnance, and set up his Banner of Council on Starrborde bottocke of his Shippe, everie shipps capten shall with spede go aborde the Admyrall to know his will.[2] Several wars with the Dutch in the 17th century prompted the English to issue instructions for the conduct of particular fleets, such as (in 1673) the Duke of York's "Instructions for the better Ordering of His Majesties Fleet in Sayling". Signals were primitive and rather ad hoc ("As soon as the Admiral shall loose his fore-top and fire a gun..."), and generally a one-way ...

The Greenland Whaling Fishery Recorded at the Orkney Singers Free Concert on Saturday 20th March, the Song Shop Trio (Aimee Leonard, Sarah Jane Gibbon & Emily Turton) sing one of the 'Big Orkney Song Project' songs, The Greenland Whaling Fishery. Greenland Whaling Fishery (South Ronaldsay version) - Traditional In eigh*** hundred and forty four On March the twentieth day We hoisted a flag to our foretop mast And for Greenland sailed away, brave boys And for Greenland sailed away Our captain walking the quarterdeck With spyglass in his hand A whale, a whale, a whale fish he cries And she blows at every span, brave boys And she blows at every span Overhaul, overhaul, let your davit tackles fall And launch your boats for sea With the line coilers and jolly jack o tars And away to the fish well go, brave boys And away to the fish well go The whale been struck and the line played out She made a great flurry with her tail The boat capsized, five men were lost And a nice little apprentice boy, brave boys And a nice little apprentice boy Sad news, sad news to our captain came Which grieved his heart full sore At the losing of the poor apprentice boy But the whale grieved him ten times more, brave boys But the whale grieved him ten times more It is time to leave this cold country now And from Greenland sail away With the hail and the snow and the whale fishes blow And the daylight is never done, brave boys And the daylight is never done And the daylight is never done The song is traditional because, as yet ...

Fire Down Below (D) [521] (380-381) This is the other main form of a chantey called "Fire Down Below." The other one is here: The text follows a pattern of just placing the fire all over the ship in various places. Due to the high number of nautical terms and the pretty monotonous melody, this one has been pretty resistant to being co-opted as a song outside of chantey contexts. I learned this one while I was operating a machine that I've nicknamed "The Circumciser," over and over. In addition to Stan Hugill's, the books by Harlow and Colcord also offer similar versions of this chantey. Incidentally, this is one of those cases where Hugill's musical notation has gone horribly wrong, so it alone is not sufficient for learning. It's unfortunate that Hugill didn't work with someone who could notate his songs accurately, in light of the fact that his text has gone down as one of the richest and also sometimes the ONLY text for many chanteys. "beef-kid" = "a mess utensil for carrying meat from the coppers" "wilderness" = slang for 'windlass' Scenes are from docks in the East End of London, April 2009. Please check out the whole chanteys project playlist, at
