Arthur Sullivan - HMS Pinafore - "Can I survive this overbearing?" (1960 D'Oyly Carte Recording) I've recently began approaching the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, probably because I've fallen for the film "Topsy-Turvy", and I've found them delightfully charming and comical, so I've decided to post a section from the pair's first huge success, "HMSPinafore", the tremendously successful Act One Finale. The opera's gentle satire builds on a classical theme for Gilbert theme of love between members of different social classes, also poking good-natured fun at the Royal Navy and, in themes to be repeated in the later operas, parliamentary politics and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. The title of the work itself is humorous, as it juxtaposes the name of a little girl's garment, pinafore, with the symbol of a naval warship. The plot itself revolves around a naval captain's daughter who is in love with a lower-class foremast hand (a common sailor, well below officer rank), even though her father intends her to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty, the cabinet minister in charge of Britain's Royal Navy. As with most of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, a surprise twist changes matters dramatically near the end of the story with everything happily resolved. The finale's narrative is as follows: Ralph, the sailor in question, after being denied his feelings by Josephine, his love, summons his shipmates, and tells them he is bent on suicide. He puts a pistol to his head, but as he is about to pull the trigger Josephine enters, proclaiming she ...

ROYAL YAGHT BRITANNIA VISITING DARTMOUTH DURING 1970 Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former Royal Yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second Royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, UK, being launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953 and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts, a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the foremast and mainmast were hinged, to allow the ship to pass under bridges. Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this never happened During her career as Royal Yacht she conveyed the Queen, other members of the Royal Family, and various dignitaries on 696 foreign visits and 272 visits in British waters. In this time Britannia steamed 1087623 nautical miles (2014278 km). On 20 July 1959, Britannia sailed the newly-opened Saint Lawrence Seaway en route to Chicago where she docked, making the Queen the first Canadian monarch to visit the city. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower was aboard Britannia for part of this cruise; Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan also ...

Wreck of the Rhone Bow, Hull, Crow's Nest on Foremast w/ Dive BVI Virgin Gorda Caribbean The Wreck of the Rhone is just off Salt Island, British Virgin Islands. I swam out to the crow's nest on the 65' foremast where you can get a good idea from there how massive the wreck is with this 150' section of the bow hull in full view. The Rhone is lying on its starboard side, and the vertical columns are actually the horizontal steel deck supports after the wood has deteriorated. Pride of Baltimore Mast View - Cambridge MD - October 23 2010.MOV I was one of the privileged few on board the Pride of Baltimore II for a sailing festival in Cambridge MD - it was a once in a lifetime event in the beautiful crisp October Chesapeake Bay Day. We were surrounded by other boats and it was a wondrous site indeed. The Pride was originally built as an authentic reproduction of a 19th century Baltimore Clipper schooner......Like the original Pride, the Pride II is not a replica of any specific vessel, and though it represents a type of vessel known as a Baltimore Clipper, it was built to contemporary standards for seaworthiness and comfort. Designed by Thomas C. Gillmer Pride II, like its predecessor, is a topsail schooner, with two large gaff sails (one on a boom and one loose-footed), a main gaff topsail, several headsails, and a square topsail and flying topgallant on the foremast. She also flies studding sails, rare on modern traditional sailing vessels. These additional sails are set along the edge of the square topsail and the mainsail, supported by additional spars known as stun's'l booms.

"Australia Landfall" Jackandjill's photos around Manly, Australia A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Manly, Australia by TravelPod blogger Jackandjill titled "Australia Landfall". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Jackandjill's travel blog entry: "Friday 12th December. After 26 days travelling we arrived in Sydney... It was great to walk into the Arrivals Hall and see David & Cheryl's beaming faces although it was eleven o'clock at night and pouring with rain. We were soon home in Manly having driven over the Harbour Bridge but weariness has fogged the memory so must drive over again sometime. Saturday, David took Cheryl to work by 7am and went to collect his new Cannondale bike as soon as the shop opened, so we had a lie-in and eventually went to Warringah Mall and did a food shop. In the late afternoon we went to Manly Hospital where Cheryl works and walked through the International Management College (Nicole Kidman got married here you know) to Shelley Beach and back along the prom to Manly Beach. It was just a relaxing day of recovery after travelling. We woke up on Sunday to a lovely sunny morning and took the Manly Ferry into the city. What a spectacular trip that is!! You pull away from Manly Wharf and cross the Heads, where the Harbour spills out into the Pacific Ocean and half way through the journey you round the foremast of HMAS Sydney on Bradleys Head to reveal the full vista of Sydney Central Business District. After 25 minutes you arrive past the iconic Opera House and the Harbour Bridge at Circular ...

LegoCorvette.wmv Minifigure scale Lego model of a Flower-class Corvette. Pictures: At roughly 200 feet, 1000 tons and 80 men, the Flower-class corvettes were among the smallest ocean-going warships deployed by the Allies during World War II. Serving in the navies of Britain, Canada and the United States (the last a rare case of "reverse-Lend Lease"), they provided vital convoy protection against U-boats in the North Atlantic at a time when far too few escort ships were available. This model depicts an early Canadian Flower after refit in 1943 (but with the short forecastle retained). It is based most closely on HMCS Chicoutimi and HMCS Agassiz. At this time the mainmast has been removed and the foremast restepped aft of the bridge. Minesweeping gear has been removed, and two 20mm Oerlikons, the radar assembly and searchlight platform added. It also includes a Hedgehog (I'm not certain when these were installed, it may have been 1944). The primary information source was The Flower Class Corvette Agassiz by John McKay and John Harland. The model is minifigure-scale (roughly 1:42), measuring 5 feet in length and 9 inches in beam. It is modeled and "minifigurable" inside and out--it splits down the middle to reveal the various internal compartments for both starboard and port cross-sections (with some allowances for the challenges posed by minifigure anatomy). Sadly the color scheme is not authentic, due to brick constraints. The lego model has many working features. An AT-AT ...

Visit to The Queen Mary Ocean Liner at Long Beach, Ca. This is a video of photos and a short video clip when me (Bill Wolverton) and some friends of mine were visiting the RMS Queen Mary (The old Queen Mary) ocean liner at Long Beach, California on November 9th, 2007. Part of the ship has been converted to a floating hotel and has been docked in Long Beach, Ca. since 1967. The photos I took are of the outside and some of the inside spaces on board the ship and I included a short video clip I took on the promenade deck of a bag piper playing at some wedding event. The engine room area was closed the day I took this video, so, I have no photos or videos of that. The next time I visit the ship, I hope to take more videos. I took over 275 photos of the ship that you can view at and my home page is at www.ki7 (Under construction) I also have a MySpace Page at http Other specs about the ship. Overall Length: 1019.5 ft. GRENADA, Diving in Grenada: Bianca C wreck (AJ) 90 - 165 feet / 28 - 42m The Bianca C was a 600 feet long cruise ship travelling the oceans since 1949. On her last voyage in October 1961 while anchoring off St. George's, she caught fire after an explosion in the engine room. In a selfless response of the town all passengers and crew but two members of the crew, burnt in the initial blow, were rescued and taken care of by the hospitality of the Grenadians. In failed attempt to tow the luxury cruise liner out to sea, it sank to 160 feet where it lies today. It is possible to dive the wreck right into the swimming pool at 130 feet as a no decompression dive. The top of the bow is at 90 feet and the foremast is still standing upright usually populated with large schools of fish and circulated by barracudas and mackerels. After four decades under water, the Bianca C is encrusted with a beautiful tapestry of hard and soft corals, and is home to barracuda, spotted eagle rays and schools of jacks. Since sometimes strong currents floating over her and because of the depth, it is a dive for advanced and experienced divers only.

Greenpeace campaigners block coal delivery to Kingsnorth Last night Greenpeace volunteers boarded E.ON's moving bulk freighter Sir Charles Parsons, carrying thousands of tonnes of coals to restock the Kingsnorth coal-fired power station. They intercepted the freighter using rigid inflatable speedboats just after midnight as the ship sped up the River Medway towards Kingsnorth, then attached climbing ladders to the vessel and scaled the 15 metre hull. Three teams comprising nine people succeeded in boarding the ship. They have scaled the ship's huge funnel and the towering foremast, and are demanding that the cargo turns back. The ship is now docked at the Kingsnorth quayside, but no coal has yet been unloaded. The intention is to delay the offloading of the coal cargo for as long as possible. Police are on the scene and have already made six arrests, but we still have four volunteers aboard with enough food and water to stay for several days, if necessary.
