Fluorine (element #9) I cannot show elemental fluorine because it is so reactive, but I do make a few atoms of it, and I show some everyday uses for fluorine compounds.
Nuclear medicine (PET) - Dispensing Fluorine 18 FDG for a PET patient A short video of me dispensinng F-18 FDG (Fluorodeoxiglucose) for a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) patient having a whole body scan. The centre I work at uses around 10mCi (370MBq) for a whole body PET scan. The isotope is produced in house in one of our two cyclotrons. The shielding used in PET is a lot thicker than for other nuclear medicine isotopes, due to the high energy dual 511keV gamma photons released from each positron annihilation decay. After I injected the patient, I calibrated the amount of FDG remaining in the syringe to work out the total dose injected into the patient. This has to be relatively accurate and decay corrected (F-18 has a half live of about 110 minutes) so that the SUV (standard uptake value) for reconstructing images can be correctly calculated. Excuse the shakey camera work and one handed dispensing. Hard to film and work behind the shielding at the same time.

What Is Fluorine What Is Fluorine Name Origin Latin: fluo (flow). "Fluorine" in different languages. Sources Found in the minerals fluorite (CaF2), cryolite (Na2AlF6) and fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F).Abundance Universe: 0.4 ppm (by weight) Sun: 0.5 ppm (by weight) Carbonaceous meteorite: 89 ppm Earth's Crust: 950 ppm Seawater: Atlantic surface: 1 x 10-4 ppm Atlantic deep: 9.6 x 10-5 ppm Pacific surface: 1 x 10-4 ppm Pacific deep: 4 x 10-5 ppm Human: 37000 ppb by weight 12000 ppb by atoms Uses Combines more readily than any other element. Used in toothpaste as fluoride (NaF) and fluoride (SnF2); also in Teflon. Hydrofluoric (HF) is used to etch glass in light bulbs and other products. Fluorochlorohydrocarbons are used extensively in air conditioning and in refrigeration. Chlorofluorocarbons have been banned for these applications because they contribute to the ozone hole. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an extremely inert and nontoxic gas, and a member of a class of compounds that are potent greenhouse gases. Notes The derivation of elemental fluorine from hydrofluoric acid is exceptionally dangerous, killing or blinding several scientists who attempted early experiments on this halogen. These men came to be referred to as "Fluorine Martyrs."

How to Make Fluorine Bobby wanted to make a stop motion movie for his 9th birthday party. Bobby applied his knowledge of quantum mechanics to the test. Together, we story boarded the plan and he did all the animation work. I edited the movie, added captions and sound. Bobby was the director and producer. Fluorine is the ninth element.

UPDATE: Canon 5D Mark II / 50D Fluorine sensor filter cleaning Canon has recently released more information regarding their new fluorine coated sensor filters found in the 5Dm2 and 50D cameras. The most notable changes being the placement of the Dichroic mirror coating on the backside of the low pass filter, facing the sensor. The other highlight is the fluorine barrier coating on the exposed surface which act much like a Teflon coating. This coating is used to help repel oils, solvents, dust and mold spores. The video also includes the approval and use of Dust-Aid sensor cleaning products on this new sensor filter.

Halocarbon Fluorinated Anesthetics Halocarbon Products Corporation established a division to produce fluorinated anesthetics in 1959 based on their experience with fluorinated chemicals. Fluorinated anesthetics were developed to solve the problem of fires in the operating room caused by the use of flammable anesthetics such as ether and cyclopropane. With the production of fluroxene in 1960, Halocarbon was the first manufacturer of fluorinated anesthetics in the US
