Austin City Council Special Called Meeting on Fluoridation On May 18th, 2011, the City of Austin Texas Council called a special meeting of the Committee for Health and Human Services to hear information and presentations on water fluoridation from both sides of the issue. The representatives of the Council present at the meeting were Mike Martinez, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Austin, and Councilwoman Randi Shade, who both asked some very pointed and informed questions concerning the public health policy of drinking water fluoridation. Proponents representing the dental profession and Austin Water Department were present. Opponents representing the Fluoride Action Network and Fluoride Free Austin were also present. One of the opponents is a local dentist. It is not often that a municipal government will actually allow an equally timed debate in a public forum to hear from experts from both sides. It is even more rare for an environmental chemist such as Dr. Paul Connett to be allowed to give his presentation of scientific information on the subject. Infant Fluoride Warning from CDC & ADA The announcements in 2006 by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Dental Association which warn parents against the use of fluoridated tap water for the reconstitution of infant formula does not seem to take into account that the baby does not have teeth until about six months from birth. These are only temporary teeth, and the adult teeth appear about seven years from birth. The assumption here is that less fluoride in the diet during the first six months will help prevent fluorosis. However, fluoride is found in many different food and drink sources, mouthwash and toothpaste that kids encounter all during those years. Fluoride is an accumulative toxin that lodges in the teeth and bones of the body and apparently certain organs of the body as well. Fluorosis may only be the tip end of the problem while young teeth are forming. The announcement does not take into account emerging research indicating that fluoride has an adverse effect on cellular development in internal organs at very low levels. So, more than just the teeth are being affected by the ingestion of fluoride. More serious and unbiased research is badly needed concerning this internal cellular damage. Also consider that babies ingest much more liquid for their body mass than do adults. And, because of this, the amount or dosage of fluoride received each day is much higher for children when compared to that of a fully grown adult. Council repealed its 20-year-old fluoridation bylaw Monday, and within two weeks Alberta Environment will give formal authority for the change, a report to aldermen says. "Once the order is issued, we can turn the taps off," Mayor Naheed Nenshi told reporters before the evening vote. The bylaw repeal passed 10-4 on Monday, with Nenshi among those voting against it. It's been an issue that previous councils and voters have grappled with for decades, with repeated plebiscites and council decisions. It could someday return to the ballot box with another plebiscite, as some doctors have suggested in the weeks since February, when council voted in a surprisingly definitive 10-3 vote to scrap fluoridation.
