  • Fluorescent night dive @ Grand CaymanCY-FL-Anemone!!!Halo!.MOV Coral Fluorescence underwater is a full fledged light show. Called Biofluorescence, protiens inside certain corals and anemones will fluoresce briliant visible light color (usually green) when expsed to intense UV light. I used a dichroic "black light" filter on my 24 watt HID light to capture the flurescent green of the anemone at the end of this video. Notice the orange color of the bloodworms that the anemone was eating, then when I went to the black light filter, the bloodworms did not fluoresce, and were dark, but the anemone turned bright green in the tentacles (the real viewing experience showed much brighter green than the video recorded).
  • Fluoroscein angiogram showing a branch retinal vein occlusion This is a fluoroscien angiogram of the left eye. Fluoroscien angiograms are used for seeing discontinuities, or disturbances in the flow of blood through the vasculature of the eye. A fluorescent dye is injected into the patient. As the dye travels back to the heart, it is then distributed throughout the body. As the blood/dye mixture enters the eye, a cobalt blue light is used to fluoresce the dye. The dye then is continually photographed to show its perfusion, or circulation through the eye. In this case, this shows what is called a branch retinal vein occlusion, and is most commonly associated with high blood pressure that causes what is known as arteriovenous nicking. This patient was complaining of a slight scotoma, or loss of vision. This shows that the BRVO is beginning to affect her central vision, and is the cause of her complaint.

  • Early Fluorescent Fixtures | 40's and 50's 40's to 50's Fluorescent light fixtures. Playing around with my new iPod nano video camera. Everything has been shot using the nano only with the built-in video effects. In the shots are a bunch of fluorescent fixtures I got from different places, salvage yards etc... The preheat models (bulbs flickering prior to strike) are very old, mostly from the 40's. They use a starter glow tube to fire up the bulb, making it flicker. The other ones firing up smoothly are equipped with early Rapid Start ballasts, one of the first commercialized that slowly took over preheat, and still in use today. The fixtures are from different brands including the Fleur-o-Liers, Mitchells, Smoot-Holman and others. All are F40T12 except the small two lamp Art Deco model, and table lamps. Enjoy! :)

Also, there are several radioactive beads, the large one is depression glass (although it's not really from the depression, but it's made the same way) from the 1860's and I'm putting it on a bracelet. The smaller ones are jadite beads with indents on the sides to resemble little dice. I got the beads as gifts to promote business in the future from a local antique store. As you can see they all fluoresce nicely, and the most radioactive thing here is the large bead going on my bracelet.

  • Look and Feel Your Best Forever -- Tip # 97 -- Expert Skin ***ysis - Dina Matters, surgery free anti aging and slimming specialist of Contours Face and Body Clinics talks about skin ***ysis and the how we can identify skin conditions such as dehydration, sebaceous activity and pigmentation changes. A Wood's lamp is a device that emits ultraviolet (UV) light in the 365 nanometer range and is commonly used by dermatologists to assist in the diagnosis of various pigment and infectious disorders. The examination is performed in a dark room, allowing the Wood's light to shine directly on the affected area for a few seconds and looking for any changes in color or fluorescence. Normal skin does not fluoresce under the light of a Wood's lamp. If a fungal or bacterial infection or pigment disorder is present, Wood's lamp examination can strengthen or lessen the suspicion of a particular diagnosis, based on the color of fluorescence of the affected skin being illuminated. In addition, subtle changes in color may be detected as well helping us with our ***ysis and recommendations.
  • Odor representations in the brain This is a real-time movie of part of the dorsal surface of a mouse olfactory bulb (a part of the brain that processes smells) while the fruity odor methyl valerate is blown by the mouse's nose. The mouse is alive and smelling - the brain is being observed under a microscope through a window surgically implanted in the skull. This mouse has been genetically engineered so that the neurons coming in from the nose to the brain fluoresce when they release neurotransmitter. At first you'll see just a little motion artifact around the blood vessels, but when the odor comes on (you'll see a circle come on in the upper left), you'll see a set of glomeruli (clusters of synapses) light up. This is the set of glomeruli that are activated by methyl valerate - other odors activate other glomeruli. You are thus seeing part of the brain's code for "I smell methyl valerate" in a living breathing animal. Copyright 2009 by John McGann

  • Simple Homemade Tea Laser More info is now available. This is a simple homemade TEA laser and is incredibly easy to make. It uses common household materials and does not require any exotic mirrors, parts, chemicals, gases, vacuum pumps, semiconductor technology etc. You can find good material about this laser by searching tea laser on Google. The laser beam, a short pulse of ultraviolet light, happens every time the spark gap fires. The light from this laser is easily seen using many common materials around the house including paper, that fluoresce under the influence of ultraviolet light. My main contribution here is to show yet another example, of how easily a TEA laser can be built by someone who is not an expert in laser technology. Some parts of the video, showing the higher rep rate, appear jumpy because I removed frames that did not synchronize with and catch the beam. Made mone music skower.
  • Biofluorescent Night Dive - Sunset Reef, East end of Grand Cayman Night dives are cool, but add a black light filter to your monster HID light, and you get to see a hidden world WITHIN a hidden world. There are proteins in the bodies of many species of coral, jellyfish, anemones, certain kinds of fish, and even nudibranchs (that eat anemones to pass their GFP into themselves) that fluoresce under UV light. Most of the time it is Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), but sometimes you see red and orange fluorescence, and if your lucky, you'll see a coral displaying both green and orange (some brain coral and soft corals will do this). The fluorescence shows up much brighter in actual viewing than the video can record due to the cameras auto-equalizing of light levels, so the actual scuba diver sees an unreal light show. Some corals fluoresce so bright that it literally looks like neon is inside, as the electrically charged photons of invisible UV light come back to your eye as energized visible light. My light is a 24 watt HID that outputs a whopping 1750 lumens which is almost 40 times brighter than a large Mag Light, and some of that light is UV light. It even cures my UV glue in seconds in my shop (I'm a polymer scientist in UV resins). So I bought a dichroic "Wood's Glass" filter from Roscoe (through a theater lighting supplier) and fabricated a snap-fit ring to fit my light, and you see the results above.
  • DANGER! The (Compact Fluorescent Bulb) and (mercury) at home For information on the company bringing you a solution contact me directly. See site below... (Fluorescent light bulbs) contain (mercury). The standard fluorescent lamp contains approximately 20 milligrams of (mercury). While there are no known health hazards from exposure to lamps that are intact, improper disposal of (fluorescent) lamps can contaminate the environment. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 800 million lamps are produced each year to replace 800 million lamps that are then disposed. Since 1 gram of (mercury) is enough to contaminate a 2-acre pond, there is enough (mercury) in those lamps to contaminate 20 million acres of water. (Mercury) is toxic to the human nervous system. Chronic breathing of (mercury) vapors can cause a range of physical symptoms, including inability to coordinate body movement and impairment of hearing, speech and vision. • Fluorescent Minerals Just showing what some fluorescent minerals look like using my "black light" or ultraviolet light. Not all minerals have fluorescence. Fluorescense is exploited in mineral science in several ways - in some minerals it serves as a means of identification, ultraviolet light is used to find materials that fluoresce, and in the extraction of ore minerals that fluoresce. They also verifiy whether extraction processes are effective. Fluorescence is also used in the microscopic examination of small-scale structures in crystals.
