  • First flocculation test on saline Nannochloropsis microalgae and filtering We have been growing nannochloropsis in a saline solution for two weeks now. The goal of the project is to harvest oil from the cells to be turned into biodiesel. We had some difficulties finding a good flocculating agent, as both aluminum sulfate and potassium aluminum sulfate both failed. We then used a 1:40 ratio of NaOH and got nice flocculation. This is the first video I've ever uploaded so it's not edited, but I hope to group a bunch of videos I will soon be posting in a more organized way with much more details as to our methods in the description
  • Side by side comparison - MEDIC clarifiers Jan 26 2011.MOV The video was taken in one of six reconstructed clarifiers equipped with MEDIC in this plant. The video shows: significantly lower effluent solids and higher flow (see size of flow tongues going over effluent weir) than that in the existing clarifiers operated by side. The effective influent energy dissipating and improved solids flocculation conditions are presented in the video "Longer flocculation time in MEDIC clarifiers)

  • Adding NaOH to our algae sample to flocculate the algae and get it to settle Adding 37.5 mL of 1 M NaOH to 1.5 L of our suspended saline nannochloropsis culture. The white precipate you see forming is magnesium hydroxide and calcium phosphate which drop out of solution at higher pH as NaOH replaces them in solution. The precipitate salts "stick" or "floc" to the algae cells, causing them to clump together and fall to the bottom of the solution to be harvest. Flocculation is something I had heard of, but known next to nothing about. There is some SERIOUSLY cool physics and chemistry going on at a molecular level, I recommend reading into it or watching a lecture. IE--the sources of magnesium and calcium phosphate are from a "synthetic sea water" bag we bought at a pet store to make the salt water brine for all our algae cultures

  • Portable Flocculation Treatment System WSB & Associates designed a portable tank that uses an aluminum sulfate injection system to treat surface water. The treatment system reduces pollutants in a body of water to meet state and local water quality standards. Treatment Process 1: Surface water is pumped to the tank to be treated 2: Pollutants from the treated water are allowed to settle to the bottom of the tank 3: Treated water is returned to the lake, and the remaining pollutants, left on the bottom of the tank, are discharged into the sanitary sewer

  • Clay Flocculation of Microcystis in a Test Tube A mixture of clay (kaolin) and flocculant (chitosan) was added to an algae (Microcystis aeruginosa) culture in a test tube. This method has been shown to be effective in removing harmful algal blooms by clumping the algal cells and clay particles and sinking the bloom to the bottom of the water column, where it dies from lack of sunlight. This video was produced for a presentation made by Team BREATHE, an undergraduate research team at the University of Maryland, College Park. The research is being conducted under the Gemstone Program for future application to the Chesapeake Bay. For more information, visit the team's website at teams.gemstone.umd.edu

  • NaOH flocculation of nannochloropsis algae for use in biofuel project We added 37.5 mL 1M NaOH to 1500 mL saline algae solution to flocculate the algae. As you can see it settles out to the bottom, and in one of our bottles we got a sweet floating clump that looked like some crazy alien or space nebulae. The flocculation is finished after about 5-10 minutes, but you can get really crystal clear water if you let it set for 24 hours. The flocculation allowed us to decant off some of the water before we poured it into our half micron poor size filter
