  • 989. Trimdon Grange (Tommy Armstrong) This song tells of an explosion of either firedamp or coaldust which took place at the Trimdon Grange colliery in South County Durham on 16 February 1882. Seventy-four miners were killed. One of the common (but unofficial) fund-raising methods in such cases was to write and sell songs about the disaster on the streets. Tommy Armstrong wrote these lyrics to the tune of the ballad "Go and Leave Me If You Wish It" which is best known in America as "Columbus Stockade". Martin Carthy learned the song from Bob Davenport and recorded it on his 1974 album, "Sweet Wivelsfeld". It was reissued in 2003 using the name "The Trimdon Grange Explosion". • Mine Disasters: "Locating and Rescue of Trapped Miners" 1998 MSHA 7min more at "Mine Safety and Health Administration Locating and Rescue of Trapped Miners... This video describes the equipment and methods used to locate trapped miners in an underground mine environment." Public domain film from the National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. A mining accident is an accident that occurs during the process of mining minerals. Thousands of miners die from mining accidents each year, especially in the processes of coal mining and hard rock mining. Most of the deaths nowadays occur in developing countries, especially China and rural parts of developed countries... Causes Mining accidents can have a variety of causes, including leaks of poisonous gases such as hydrogen sulfide[1] or explosive natural gases, especially firedamp or methane, dust explosions, collapsing of mine stopes, mining-induced seismicity, flooding, or general mechanical errors from improperly used or malfunctioning mining equipment (such as safety lamps or electrical equipment). Use of improper explosives underground can also cause methane and coal-dust explosions. Accidents by country Australia New South Wales's Mount Kembla Mine disaster of 31 July 1902 was an explosion resulting in the death of 96 miners, including two engaged in rescue work. An explosion at the Mount Mulligan mine on 19 September 1921 killed 75 workers. Only 11 bodies could be recovered ...
  • New Zealand Mine Explosions Traps 27 "A New Zealand coal mine explosion has trapped more than two dozen miners underground just a few weeks after the celebratory rescue of the 33 Chilean miners. The West Coast Mine Rescue Team is currently assessing the situation to devise the best way to extract the 27 miners believed to still be alive in the mine. Power had gone out at the Pike River coal mine prior to the explosion. By the time the electrician arrived at the scene, he discovered a loader driver, who was hundreds of feet away from the explosion, had been blown off of his machine--an indication of the strength of the blast. Two miners who were working in a different part of the mine have made it out of the mine's entrance and said three more could be behind them. The mine branches off past the entrance and there are two emergency exits, but it is still unclear whether either of them can be reached. The rescue team must work quickly as police worry that the mine's ventilation system may have been damaged in the blast and trapped methane gas could build and trigger further explosions."

  • Flame as an Early Fire Detector in Mines This was clipped from the 1965 training film, Magic of Fire (23 minutes), produced by the US Bureau of Mines. By the early nine***th century it had become known that firedamp became explosive when the flammable gas concentration was between approximately 5 and 15% by volume. On 25 May 1812 an explosion occurred at Felling Colliery, near Gateshead-on-Tyne, killing ninety-two men and boys. Reports of the circumstances behind this accident had such an impact on a London barrister published proposals for the formation of a society to consider ways of preventing such incidents. Called the Sunderland Society its first meeting was held on 1 October 1813. The main result of their deliberations was the invention by Sir Humphrey Davy, working under their auspices, of his now famous flame safety lamp. Despite the introduction of flame safety lamps into coal mines, explosions of firedamp remained a significant problem. Although no formal accident statistics were collected at the time, the number occurring seemingly continued along a rising trend that had been apparent before the Sunderland Society began its deliberations. Responding to this, in 1834 a petition was introduced before Parliament requesting that action be taken to do something about the situation. In response the House of Commons set up a Select Committee to study the occurrence of accidents in coal mines. Over the next four years it is probable that over three hundred coal miners died in explosions. Despite this, still ...

  • 12-string Guitar: School Days Over Written by Ewan McColl and recorded by The Dubliners with Luke Kelly doing the singing, this song recalls the days not too distant in time when boys went straight from school into the mines to dig for coal in various parts of the British Isles. It was a hard and dangerous life, for as well as the obvious dangers of cave-ins, there were hidden dangers like fire-damp and poison gas which could kill either by breathing them or by causing explosions. There was an even more insidious killer in the form of coal dust which was breathed in continuously and could cause lung disease such as emphysema which might not show up until much later in life. Miners were an essential workforce which kept industry going, a fact that was recognized during WWII when mine workers were exempt from being called up into the armed forces. The young men on leaving school went into the mines and were known as Bevan Boys after the Cabinet Minister in charge of mining. This is a request for Eddie.
