Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 34 PLEASE READ THIS - Only Howard Hughes could produce a film in which (a) John Wayne, playing Genhis Khan as if he were a gunslinger, tears off Susan Hayward's dress in the opening scene; and (b) a seven-minute cheesecake dance sequence, consisting of four distinct parts, culminates in Susan Hayward indulging in some pelvic thrusting and Fruedian sword play. This was her very first on screen dance and it is reported that she received six weeks of dancing lessons to prepare for this epochal event. This much-ridiculed Oriental Western is"The Conqueror" (1956), which earned inclusion in the book, "The Fifty Worst Movies of All Time" by Harry Medved and Randy Dreyfuss (CBS Consumer Publishing 1978). Wayne's performance is impossible to watch without feelings of gut-gnawing embarrassment and mirthful fascination. The glorious lines of dialogue in this clip illustrate beautifully the depth's of The Duke's thespian talents as he chews the scenery as Temujin, the Mongol chief who later became Genghis Khan. Susan Hayward, plays Bortai, the hot but reluctant Tartar bride of Temujin. Pedro Armendariz played Jamuga, Temujin's loyal and wise brother, while William Conrad played their more brutish brother, Kasar. Agnes Moorehead played Hunlun, their brave and loyal mother. The film was directed by the actor Dick Powell, who sidelined as a director and producer. Wikipedia reports: "The exterior scenes were shot on location near St. George, Utah, 137 miles downwind of the United States ...

Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 16 PLEASE READ THIS - This is a heavily-edited version of the lengthy Sadie Hawkins Day sequence from Li'l Abner (1959). The film starred Peter Palmer as Li'l Abner Yokum, Leslie Parish as Daisy May and Stella Stevens as Appassionata Von Climax. The statuesque Julie Newmar played Stupefyin' Jones, a female "robot" with the power to stop men dead in their tracks. Five feet eleven Newmar had an IQ of 135 and was best know as Rhoda the Robot in "My Living Doll", and as the first Catwoman on the 60s "Batman" TV series. Ms Newmar also features in Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 28. The film was directed by Melvin Frank and Nelson Riddle contributed original music. And yes, that's Jerry Lewis in a cameo appearance. I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

1950s and Women's Fashion It was mentioned in a 50's fashion documentary that models didn't cross legs as they walked down the catwalk, they glided. As far as fashion is concerned it sums up the decade - the women simply glided through it. A dress has the magical effect of making a woman look utterly feminine, but the spell is broken when she wears those two-legged things. From Flowers for Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico: " ...Mrs Harris had attained her paradise. She was in a state of dreamed-for and longed-for bliss. All of the hardships, the sacrifices, the economies and hungers and doing-without she had undergone faded into insignificance. Buying a Paris dress was surely the most wonderful thing that could happen to a woman." "I created flower women, with tiny waists like stems and skirts billowing out like petals." Christian Dior

Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 31 PLEASE READ THIS - This is the second of two dance sequences from "Il Terrore dei barbari" (1959) (The Terror of the Barbarians), which was released as "Goliath and the Barbarians" in English-speaking countries. This film was the fourth of the Peplum films made by Steve Reeves in Italy. Peplum is the name given to a genre of adventure or fantasy films set in ancient lands, usually featuring a muscle-bound hero, and are also known as Sword and Sandal epics. The name is derived from peplos, the ancient Greek word for tunic. Steve Reeves played Emiliano, the wood-cutter who swears vengeance against the marauding hordes who murdered his father. Chelo Alonso, the beautifully exotic dancer seen in this clip, played Londo, the daughter of one of the barbarian chiefs. She was born in Cuba to a Cuban father and Mexican mother and attained fame as a dancer in Havanna before appearing as an exotic dancer at the Folies Bergère in Paris. There she was billed as "The Cuban H-Bomb", a title bestowed on her because of her unique blend of Cuban rhythms and burlesque bump-and-grind. The lovely Ms Alonso can be seen in several other Peplum films including "Son of Samson" (1960) with Mark Forest, and "Atlas in the Land of the Cyclops" (1961) with Gordon Mitchell. Livio Lorenzon played Igor, the savage barbarian chief who lusts after Londo and Andrea Checchi played Delfo, Londo's father. Curiously, Alboino, the lord of the barbarians, was played by 55-year-old Bruce Cabot, the hero of the ...

Downland Farm in the Fifties DVD From the makers of the award winning Farming on Film series comes this fascinating new archive video showing life on a Sus*** Farm at the time of significant change. More than 30 men were employed at harvest, with a range of machinery including several tractors, binders, reapers, a threshing set and a flax puller seen at work. Stacks were made and thatched by hand, with the aid of a boom and grab to lift the hay from the carts. Crops featured include cereals, flax, hay and silage as well as root crops for winter feed. A unique look back at a time when the English countryside was a busier place. For more information visit:
Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night) - Ronnie Milsap Groovy! Originally recorded in 1985, the song was Milsap's 42nd single to be released. At the same time, it was also his 27th No. 1 hit on the Billboard country charts. Like many of his other singles, the song also fared well as a crossover hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts as it entered the Top 10, peaking at No. 8. This is his last Top 10 single to appear on this particular chart. The song was praised by critics, and fans alike, and remains as one Milsap's most popular recordings. In a year when 51 songs rotated out of the Hot Country Singles' No. 1 position, "Lost in the Fifties Tonight" was one of just two songs of the group to spend more than one week at No. 1 (it spent two, as did The Judds' "Have Mercy), and Milsap's song was the No. 1 country song of 1985. That same year, it won Milsap his fourth Grammy Award for "Best Country Vocal Performance" for a male artist.
